Lincoln Park Academy senior, Haniya Shareef has been named one of the top 40 a finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. As a top 40 finalist, Haniya will receive at least $25,000 in awards. She was selected from a pool of highly qualified entrants based on her project’s scientific rigor and her potential to become world-changing scientific leaders. Author Lois McGuire visited Rivers Edge Elementary School to read her book Don’t Be That Kid At School.  Each Rivers Edge teacher was given a copy of the book as well as the Teacher Resource Guide, funded through the Education Foundation grants for teachers. Dr. McGuire is a retired Superintendent from New Jersey and worked many years as a classroom teacher. She knows a thing or two about discipline and behavior! Students in Mrs. Theresa Delancy’s 5th grade ELA class have been reading the novel, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. They have been learning the importance of being kind and accepting to others. Northport K-8 students are celebrating literacy this entire week along with all the other schools in SLPS and throughout Florida. Students are making “Storybook Snowmen,” playing pre-k through 5 Bingo Challenge, Middle School Literacy Link Challenge, Get Caught Reading and Buddy Reading activities as well as “Chew and Read” and “Lollipop Reading!” Students are promoting reading and literacy skills throughout the school. They love to participate and it brings a focus on reading for pleasure specifically. Northport is pleased to participate in “Celebrate Literacy Week Florida!”

Each week Ms. Capozzi’s 1st graders practice their reading fluency with a story on their Journeys book. At the end of the week, the students can read it by themselves on Flashlight Friday!

Northport Deans Georgia Stone and Billy Hicks recently stepped into Susan Matteson’s eighth grade class and presented a solid lesson pertaining to personal security. The lesson was a group project where students were given information from the American Security Council Foundation website about personal security and the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Each group was given an article to read. Students then created a word cloud about the main idea of their topic and the important words about each topic. Congratulations to Dr. Rolanda A. Jones, Chorus Director, Dan McCarty Middle School, who was recently honored with FMEA’s 2018 Music Education Service Award. This award recognizes the outstanding service of members who have been active in music education for 25 years or more.

The Florida Music Education Association (FMEA) Awards Committee presented Principal Susan Seal of Treasure Coast High School (TCHS) with the 2018 FMEA Secondary Administrator of the Year Award on January 12 during the FMEA Professional Development Clinic/Conference at the Tampa Bay Convention Center.  The FMEA Awards and Recognition Program is one of the more visible ways in which FMEA can recognize those who make outstanding contributions to music education throughout the state.   This prestigious award is given to a school administrator who is not a professional music educator, but who displays ardent support of the school music program. Anthony Knighton, a graduate of Fort Pierce Central High School is currently attending Southern Illinois University (SIU) where he was named as a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award.  Weighing in at 246 and clearing six feet by two inches, this defensive end from Fort Pierce, Florida set SIU freshman records and led all MVFC freshmen in sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (11.0) this season. The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion showed their pride at the annual Martin Luther King, Junior Day Parade in Fort Pierce.  Marching in this parade is a tremendous honor and privilege for Port St. Lucie High. The Battalion formation led by the Jaguar’s Color Guard was commanded by Cadet Captain Morgan Emerson carrying the National Flag. Cadet Major Tesa May carried the State Flag. Northport seventh graders are working diligently on their very meaningful Project Citizen collaborations.  Students are following the criteria for the projects by identifying a problem, gathering information, examining alternative policies, proposing and developing their own public policy and then developing an action plan.  Northstar instructor  Thomas McDonald and Elizabeth Montilla, the critical thinking  teacher, are collaborating to make sure that efficacy is evident in the very important projects. The American Security Council Foundation flew essay contest winners Jayden Diago from Northport K-8 School in Port Saint Lucie, FL and Alex McGuigan from Storm Grove Middle School in Vero Beach, FL on an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C in December. All enjoyed and learned about national monuments and our nation’s capital. Visitors enjoyed the Capitol Building, visited the White House, the National Archives, and the Museum of Natural History. Southport Middle School is Running Full STEAM Ahead! Southport Middle School presented an amazing night of events on December 19th across the school campus for our students and families. The South Florida Science Museum from West Palm Beach hosted a STEAM event with 20 interactive high-tech activities including a 3D Printer, Virtual Reality Headsets, Lego Mindstorm activities, Robots, Roller Coasters, Legos and more!  Student volunteers from St. Lucie West Centennial High School and Southport staff assisted with the activities and students were thrilled with the exciting learning experience!
