Students in Ms. Steffens Studio Art classes have been participating in a host of exciting contests, exhibitions and juried shows this school year. Their work has been displayed at the Art Connection in Ft. Pierce, The 3rd Annual Highwaymen Heritage Trail Festival, and the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds. We were recently notified of several wins in the PSL Drop Savers Poster Contest and are awaiting word on the Doodle4Google contest and the eminent Dali Museum’s Student Surrealist Art Exhibition entries.
Under the direction of Band Director Jim Lebon, students from the Southport Middle School Band recently performed at the Florida Bandmasters Association District 13 Concert Music Performance Assessment, a yearly festival that is judged by well-known professionals from our state. The festival was held at Treasure Coast High School. The band prepared three pieces for stage performance: Enterprise March, Theme and Variations, and Sea Song Fantasy. On April 7th the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Drill Team competed in the State Drill Meet in Lakeland, FL at George Jenkins High School. With the hard work and diligence from the team, the Jaguars’ Drill Team ended their season on a great note.
When St. Lucie Sheriff’s Officer Wheeler was assigned to support Fairlawn Elementary School, it was apparent that a positive connection was established right away. With appreciation for the support she provides and wanting her to feel like Fairlawn was her home, teachers and students began writing letters to her and making plans to decorate her office on the school’s campus. On 04/04/18, TCHS’s Criminal Justice Department took a group of six students to the Federal Courthouse located in Fort Pierce. Judge Maynard and Judge Rosenberg put together a case about online threats made by an individual. Students were divided into three groups: prosecution, defense, and jury. All three groups worked with true professionals in the field such as lawyers, public defenders, and court staff members. On Saturday April 21, test drive a new Buick and help Port St. Lucie High School (PSLHS) located at 1201 SE Jaguar Lane in Port St. Lucie receive up to $10,000. Garber Buick GMC in Ft. Pierce will have new Buick vehicles at the school for this Test Drive Event from 8:00am-3:00pm. For each 2-3 minute Test Drive, Buick will donate $10.00. When the event exceeds 100 test drives, Buick will double the donation to $20.00. The goal is to reach the maximum donation of $10,000 for the day! What a marvelous and celebratory morning in the Northport Media Center recently. Students from the 6th and 7th grade Northstar team were privileged to take part in an engaging program honoring the contributions of top-notch women from across so many arenas and avenues of life. Girls from the classes kicked off the program with a Maya Angelou poem and then used the alphabet to lionize many powerful and courageous women from all walks of life and in all areas of history and the present. Students from Lakewood Park Elementary enjoyed a creative twist to their math homework as they used the many items at the local Indrio Crossing Winn Dixie to help them solve grade level math problems. Parents and grandparents got in on the fun and drawings for Winn Dixie gift cards. What a great evening of mathematical fun!
Students and staff members from Lakewood Park Elementary participated in an engaging week of Spring Break Camp that was housed at C. A. Moore Elementary. Students had fun as they “pumped up” their core academics. The Falcons send a special shout out to the Explorers for their willingness to share their campus with us.
For the last two years, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) and the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) have worked collaboratively to create a community work experience for students with disabilities. 8th grade MOA students planted slash pine seedlings for the Moore’s Creek, Wesley Island restoration project.
