Fifth grader Brandon Roth from Mariposa Elementary School received the St. Lucie County Fire Department Citizen Hero Award for his courageous actions during a life-threatening situation on June 25th, 2018. On this day, ten-year-old Roth was riding his skateboard when he discovered a neighbor in distress lying in her doorway. He ran to her aid and flagged down a passing car to call 911. He continued to wait with her until the rescue trucks and firefighters arrived. His quick thinking and immediate action averted a potentially tragic outcome.

A Community Team comprised of local leaders (Mayor Hudson, Nick Mimms, Will Armstead, Judi Miller, Deb LaBella and Joe Smith) and St. Lucie Public Schools district personnel joined with St. Lucie Elementary School’s leaders to brainstorm support strategies for students. The value of partnerships is immeasurable. Thank you to all of our valuable partners.

On Friday October 12, 2018, the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguars had their homecoming game against the Pompano Beach High School Golden Tornados. It was the 30th Anniversary of our school, and alumni came back to support and watch the game. Our homecoming game is the most popular football game of the season, so we had more cadets work this event.  Cadet Captain Hunter Payne oversaw visitor parking. On Saturday, October 13, 2018, Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Raider Team attended the Jupiter High School Raider meet. Our male and female teams competed in each of five different obstacles: Sand Bag Carry, Rope Bridge, Cross Country Rescue, Team Run, and Tire Flip. On Saturday November 3, test drive a new Buick and help Fort Pierce Westwood High School (FPWHS) located at 1801 Panther Lane in Fort Pierce, receive up to $10,000. Garber Buick GMC in Ft. Heroes come in all ages. On August 20th, Allison Goldsmith, a fourth grader at Fairlawn Elementary School, saved a fellow student who was choking during lunch. Deputy Rue, the school’s resource officer, witnessed the quick and positive action of Allison as she attended to her friend by patting her on the back until the food dislodged. The officer celebrated Allison’s ability to come to the aid of a fellow student.  She set a great example for being a good citizen/leader/friend. Click here to hear Allison share her thoughts:      

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced that Chester A. Moore Elementary teacher Nardi Routten is one of five leaders from around the country who has been appointed to the National Assessment Governing Board.  Ms. Routten will serve a four-year term during which she will help set policy and assist in the identification of subject area content for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation’s Report Card. The School Board and Superintendent recognized Mrs. Routten for her teaching excellence and for her prestigious appointment. Congratulations, Mrs. Routten!

Fort Pierce Central Culinary students and Health Science HOSA students partnered for a successful HOSA Fundraiser. Chef Jesse Strell and Mrs. Samantha Jackson combined forces to host a Spaghetti Fund Raiser where and HOSA students sold 115 dinners, and Central’s Culinary students prepared the meals. Go Cobras!

Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Albert Wilson (#15) continues to support Chester A. Moore Elementary School (CAM) in Fort Pierce, Florida. Students at Weatherbee Elementary School are applying literacy and STEAM skills during weekly visits to the media center. Students create in the new Maker Space, read in the Library Living Room, practice fluency in the George Washington Readers’ Theater, and work on computer-based learning in addition to checking out their favorite books.  

On October 11, 2018, the Port St. Lucie Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion participated in the 30th annual homecoming parade from Village Green Elementary School, down Lennard Road, and back to Port St. Lucie High School. Congressman Brian Mast and leading cadets took turns calling cadences as they showed their pride carrying each state’s flag. Leading our Battalion was PSLHS’s color guard commanded by Cadet 1st Sergeant Andre Hannon, accompanied by Cadet Major Dariel Parzych and Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Justin Locklar and Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Mic heal Bourguillon as guards.  

Palm Pointe Kindergarten students enjoyed an exciting learning opportunity this week when St. Lucie County Firefighters came to their school to teach them about fire safety. October is fire safety month, and to celebrate this initiative, students had an opportunity to interact with our local firefighter heroes.  Students learned what to do in the event of a fire, how to safely exit their home, how and when to call 911, and the importance of coming up with a family plan during a fire emergency.  They were able to explore the firetruck and tools used by the firemen. This year’s ECTAC Conference was abuzz with conversation as educators from across Florida celebrated and learned from other schools who are exceeding expectations. Palm Pointe’s Environmental Club participated in the “A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon” program on October 4th along with approximately 1,800 students and teachers from over 30 schools, with the help of over 30 natural resource expert organizations, engaged in hands-on science exploration at over 32 sampling sites along the Indian River Lagoon. Students, teachers, and volunteers collected samples from Volusia to Palm Beach Counties representing the entire length of the IRL. Palm Pointe’s Environmental Club was a part of this! Dan McCarty Middle School is stepping up their civics game this year! The local middle school was proud to welcome County Clerk Joseph Smith into the Eagles family for a visit to all seventh graders. It’s a state requirement for seventh graders to have a civic education, and Dan McCarty has found innovative ways of teaching the subject. The visit from Clerk Joseph Smith was an opportunity for students to communicate with an elected official about public policy ideas and interact with a public servant who was also once a student in St Lucie County. Andre Barnes, art teacher from Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies, provides a closer look into his art pieces on display at the Susan Broom Kilmer Branch Library in Fort Pierce. Fourth grade students in Ms. Mellion’s class at Mariposa Elementary showed that matter matters! They were given an opportunity in science to show the three states of matter as well as describe their particles. Students used shoe boxes to display and create their projects. Students also presented their projects to the class for everyone to enjoy. Below are just some of the amazing examples the students created.

Students in Mr. Fess’ 8th grade Northstars STEM class are creating kites as part of their Flight & Space course. In addition to studying the history and predicted future of flight travel, students are learning the forces acting on flying objects and how aerodynamics can help improve the efficiency of flying objects.
