Northport K-8 middle school art class students created an art project with the theme Adopt Don’t Shop in hopes of raising awareness of the adoption for cats and dogs. Students created a colorful background collage using reused paper, creating a new purpose for the paper. The collage served as a symbolic gesture for animals because those who are adopted gain a new purpose in life. Once the collage was completed, students created a dog or a cat using oil pastels for the eyes, nose, and face. Dominic, a 6th grader, stated, “The important thing I did was make a dog poster to help dogs like pit bulls get adopted.” Selected students’ artwork can be seen at Dogs and Cats Forever, a no-kill animal shelter located at 4600 Selvitz Road in Fort Pierce, FL.
