Along with hundreds of schools across the state of Florida, Northport is recognizing parents, grandparents and families who come to the school to support our children. November is heralded as Florida Family Engagement in Education Month, and Northport is engaging families at every turn. We understand that family involvement is a vital piece to the success of the school unit. We are one big extended family and we believe in student support. Mariposa Elementary celebrated Storybook Character Day. It was a huge success and culminated with a character parade featuring Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grades. Many of our teachers and staff participated as superheroes including our very own Principal R. Craig Logue and Assistant Principal Angela Patton. Pictured Above: R. Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion hosted a Raider competition at Port St. Lucie High School. Volunteer cadets for each company assisted in running the competition’s five events. The cadets performed tasks such as running scores back to H22 (the JROTC classroom), working the concession stand, and making sure tents posted around the school had water for anyone who needed it. There were 11 schools from four different counties with over 25 separate teams competing in three separate categories (Male, Female, and Mixed). Treasure Coast High School Criminal Justice students participated in Florida Public Service Association (FPSA) training on the teacher development day (10-26-18). The students practiced the following techniques: handcuffing, building searches, cover vs. concealment, interpersonal skills, weapon retention, and radio communications. The students performed exceptionally well. The FPSA state competition takes place in March 2019 in Orlando Florida.
St. Lucie West Centennial Culinary 2 students put up an awesome Halloween buffet. Culinary 2 students in Chef Gedke-Balachak’s classes worked together to whip up this ghoulish celebration! Way to go, Eagles!
Port St. Lucie High students explored Florida Polytechnic University’s STEM Integration labs. Hosted by Dr. Ryan Integlia, John Picchiarini and Chris Medley’s students participated in demonstrations with wearable electronics, Arts and STEM integration, optoelectronics, supervised machine learning, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy just to name some of experiences! The visit is the first step in this year’s collaboration project between Port St. Lucie High Technical Design students and Florida Polytechnic University students. Look for more to come!
On Saturday November 3, test drive a new Buick and help Fort Pierce Westwood High School (FPWHS) located at 1801 Panther Lane in Fort Pierce, receive up to $10,000. Garber Buick GMC in Ft. Pierce will have new Buick vehicles at the school for this Test Drive Event from 8:00am-3:00pm. For each two-to-three minute test drive, Buick will donate $10.00. When the event exceeds 100 test drives, Buick will double the donation to $20.00. The goal is to reach the maximum donation of $10,000 for the day! For the last eight years, Northport has recognized the month of October as Bullying Awareness Month. Students are educated using a multi-pronged approach with a common message. We don’t tolerate bullying at Northport; we offer tools to cope using an individualized plan, and we promote a single school culture with kindness, civic duty, patriotism, service, care and concern as our bell weather teaching style. Second grade students at Palm Pointe were working on their summarizing skills this week. Students were allowed to select a grade appropriate book of their choice and were tasked with retelling the events by giving a thorough summary of the book. In addition to their summary, students used pumpkins to create a representation of one of the main characters in the book. The second grade team invited all staff and students to come by and visit their storybook pumpkin display. How amazing and creative our Palm Pointe students are!
Students came to school all decked out in orange to take a stand against bullying. They wanted to send a clear message that they don’t support bullying and that they won’t be a bystander. Way to go, students! Together, let’s stomp out bullying for good.
What a great day in the Northport cafeteria and on our school patio. Hundreds of parents came to enjoy school lunch with their children. Beverly Yates and her MARVELOUS kitchen staff brought different styles of homemade pizza to the school. It was a special day and the community really enjoyed the different toppings and spending time with their children! Let’s do it again, Mrs. Yates and staff !!!!!!!
With over 5,400 employees, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) was recognized as one of St. Lucie County’s Best Places to Work. This is the second year in a row the School District has received this honor in the “Large Employer” (over 200 employees) category. The announcement was accompanied by cheers from staff members at the 17th Annual Best Places to Work St. Lucie County Awards Ceremony held on October 25th and hosted by the St. Lucie County Human Resources Association and Personnel Dynamics. The final reveal of Bayshore Elementary School’s new cafe wall designs were met with excitement and applause! Students and staff are very proud of their new cafeteria and send kudos to Child Nutrition Services and others from the District who supported this grant-funded project.
We’re using our brains at Northport! Seventh grade Northstars students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class dissected sheep brains as part of their “Medical Detectives” curriculum. In this unit, students learned the parts of the brain as well as their functions. Today, while dissecting the sheep brain, students identified the different parts of the brain and marked them with labels.
Mrs. Jennifer Votino was selected from candidates across the nation to be a 2019 Carson Dellosa Brand Ambassador. Mrs. Votino teaches first and second grade math and science at Rivers Edge Elementary. As a brand ambassador, Mrs. Votino will be providing feedback on Carson Dellosa products used in the classroom. Each month she will receive products from Carson Dellosa to review. As a Brand Ambassador, she will also be given products to give away on her Facebook and Instagram pages.
On Friday October 19, 2018, Port St. Lucie High School’s Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Raider Team attended the South Fork Raider meet. We competed against eight other schools through multiple events. Our male and female teams participated in five events including: three-mile run, rope bridge, cross country rescue, etc. Our first male team won 1st overall and ranked first place in the three-mile run and rope bridge. Our second male team won third overall. Lastly, our female team ranked second overall and placed first in the three-mile run and cross-country rescue.
On Saturday, October 20, 2018, Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion cadets participated in a car wash held at O’Rielly’s Auto Parts. Cadets put together and took part in this fundraiser to support our award-winning Raider Team. Cadets spent four hours cleaning vehicles and building esprit de corps. Donations were given because of hard work and dedication to our Jaguar Battalion. Cadet Sergeant Shane Canady was the main coordinator in charge of this annual proceeding.
Northport K-8 School and our community partners, GiveBack2Kids, Inc., are pleased to present our GiveBack2Kids Student of the Month for October. Students are selected for leadership, perseverance and citizenship. Our community is so pleased to present these highly coveted awards to Daniel Robinson and Lucky Pierre Louis. Great job, young men!
