Students at Parkway Elementary got to sample Sweet Potato Fries on Thursday during lunch. Students learned where sweet potatoes are grown, how fries are made from them, and the surprising health benefits they provide!
Northport fifth graders were excited to top off their unit on weather with a visit to the media center from Britley Ritz, ABC Channel 25 meteorologist. The students began the program with a water cycle Flocabulary review. The Flocab was titled, “I’m water, I make the planet blue!” Britley spoke about her fear of weather as a child, when she lived through a tornado. She went on to study meteorology and weather at Ball State University where she conquered those childhood fears. Part of what makes Northport K-8 community-friendly is their continued battle against bullying. At Northport K-8, students and families are educated to stand up against bullying in all forms. This year, thanks to two community business partners who help make Northport K-8 flourish, IDProducts Source and David Toth Construction, donated enough money to bring our students two “Buddy Benches.” The community cares about our children and these donations put real, first rate effort into community service and community action. Northport K-8 is so grateful!
Northport was so pleased to host Ary De Latorre from Dr. Cook’s Dental Office. With February being National Dental Health Month, students learned all about healthy sneezing, correct hand washing techniques, and how to brush their teeth properly. Students also learned not to share toothbrushes, how to floss, and how to eat to deter bacteria. It was a great learning experience, and we appreciate all the time spent educating our youngest students on proper teeth brushing. Thank you very much to Dr. Cook’s Dental Office!

School safety is a concern not only for parents, teachers, administrators, but also for students that attend school. When local law enforcement asked students to assist them in a school safety plan, they provided some high tech solutions. Later this spring, three Saint Lucie Public Schools: Morningside Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, and West Gate K-8 will each receive a Buddy Bench. A Buddy Bench is anti-bullying, and keeps plastic out of the landfill! It’s a brightly colored bench made from recycled plastic caps that’s also a ‘safe space’ – signaling when a child has a need, and teaches all of the children about the environment. On March 2 and 3, 2019, the Treasure Coast High School Air Force JROTC will be conducting a 14 mile walk to raise awareness of those who survived and those who gave their lives in WWII during the fight for control of the Philippines. This walk, titled The 2019 Bataan Memorial Death March, will take place starting at the school and cadets will walk down Port St. Lucie Boulevard to Veterans Memorial Parkway on Saturday from 08:00-11:00, and then from Veterans Memorial Parkway back to the school on Sunday from 12:00-3pm. The Southport Middle School Guidance Department held a Career Fair for our seventh and eighth grade students to support them in career exploration. The event tied into the Naviance classroom lessons that counselors facilitate, which promotes career awareness and helps students develop a deeper understanding of their talents, skills, and personality traits. The community really came through for this event, with professionals from a wide variety of careers for students to meet and greet. In the 9th annual Project Citizen District Showcase, Southport Middle School students Johnathan Almeida, Abigail Ward, and Makenzie Fairchild presented their project entitled “The Overuse of Plastics in St. Lucie County” which created public policy on reducing plastic usage. The students worked hard for weeks after school to create and implement an action plan. For their presentation, they explained how they would carry out their plan. Project Citizen is a county-wide initiative that helps to deepen students’ understanding of their Civics content. It teaches seventh grade students about legislation and promotes responsible participation in local and state government.
The SLW Centennial High School Navy JROTC was proud to provide a Color Guard to open the Black History Month Celebration at Northport K-8 on February 14th. The Color Guard Unit consisted of Cadet Chief Petty Officer Michael Parnass (Right Rifleman), Cadet Third Class Petty Officer Damien Cooper (Ensign Flagman), Cadet Lieutenant Commander Matthew Ciolino (Unit Flagman), and Cadet Third Class Petty Officer Alek Yatsushkevech (Left Rifleman).
For the very first time in the 33-year history of Northport K-8, the school won First Place for the Educational Display at the St. Lucie County Fair! If you visit the fair, please make sure to visit the School Display Building and cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award.
Northport is so thrilled to present our February Students of the Month. Students are selected for good citizenship, being a good friend, stopping a bully, or following the Northport K-8 Positive Behavior Supports. Students are rewarded with certificates, cookies, juice, and a celebration! A wonderful job to students and thank you to all parents and grandparents who attended the event.
Two groups led by Civics teachers Alaina Moise and Tamara Lindo represented Lincoln Park Academy in the Project Citizen Showcase at IRSC on February 14, 2019. The first project entitled “Stop Human Trafficking” was presented by Molly Gillard, Alexis Bentinganan, Jaimy Ponceti, and Dalita Decambre. The second project entitled “Food Inspection Correction” was presented by Raul Pozniak, Ricardo Ramirez, Autumn Thomas, and Gabriel Vandermude. Of the three top spots, both projects placed in the top three to advance to the state competition. Congratulations on your success!
Fort Pierce Westwood High School’s Agriculture program is growing a beautiful crop of cabbage. The cabbage will be put on the lunch lines in the cafeterias for students to taste and have a part of their meals.
More than 150 Health Science 10th and 11th grade students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School learned Hands-Only CPR. These students were taught by Mary Higgins, Elizabeth Durkee, and their Certified Nursing Assistant students. Students learned how to recognize the need for CPR, how to call 911, and how to push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” The American Heart Association’s Hands-Only CPR method at this beat can more than double a person’s chances of survival.
