St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) and Treasure Coast Builders Association (TCBA) continue to grow the pipeline for students in the Skilled Trade fields. Members of TCBA met with teachers and school administrators at Port St. Lucie High School to plan for the school year.

United Way of St. Lucie County will be hosting its annual Day of Caring on October 12th. Last year over 400 volunteers completed 16 projects! United Way is currently recruiting volunteers. This year, registration will be online. There are two (2) different registration options: individual and team. Registration link can be found at: https://www.unitedwayslc.org/day-caring-2019. Mrs. Madorma and Mrs. Cameron’s 5th grade class have been working on Growth Mindset this week. Positive and healthy thinking will be a year long project that the teachers hope to build into a lifetime habit. Great job!
St. Lucie West Centennial’s Outboard Marine Technology program is off to a great start! Students are learning about general lab safety, identifying tools needed for their work and measuring electricity and temperature. The students are actively engaged and excited about the authentic learning that will take place this year.
Third graders from Mrs. Kemp and Miss Schrader’s class visited the Media Center recently. Students selected two or three free books donated by a parent and then selected a library book. Students learned how to use the library and follow the library norms. It was a GREAT visit. 67% of all children from ages 6-17 get their pleasure reading books from the school library. The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. supported Dan McCarty Middle School staff during pre-school week and have adopted the Eagles for the 2019-2020 school year. Community support is beneficial to the overall success of students, teachers, and the community.
What a smooth opening day at Northport K-8 School. The teachers greeted their new students and parents with smiles, hugs, and high fives. Many thanks to community partners for coming to Northport to welcome parents and families. Their support is vital for a successful school year. Thanks to Vietnam Veterans, Chapter 566; 1 PSL Baptist Church; First United Methodist Church; Assistant PSLPD Police Chief, Richard Del Toro; and our partners at Step Up America for being those first welcoming faces at our school.
Northport is thankful for the love and care offered to students and teachers from the First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. The church congregation has embraced this Title One school as a mission. Students and teachers are blessed to be the recipients of lunches and breakfasts on teacher planning days and workdays, donations of over 100 fully loaded bookbags, supplies and so much more. The Navigators are thrilled to have so many this organization’s members in place as classroom tutors and adoptive grandparents.
CTE educators completed professional development focused on robotics and photonics with IRSC and Best Practices for industry certifications with Certiport representatives. They were also provided with the opportunity to take industry certification exam(s).

St. Lucie County’s Oxbow Eco-Center 2019 Summer Camps were full of adventure. Children ages 8-12 participated in a Lego Robotics and Coding Camp. Using Lego Mindstorm EV-Three and We-Do kits, children worked in teams to complete animal and nature themed science experiments with robotics and coding. Some campers recognized similar problem solving experiments in STEM and Odyssey of the Mind courses.

Each year, the United Way of St. Lucie County hosts a Stuff the Bus event. It is a one day push for the collection of school supplies at all local Walmart locations. This year the event will be held on July 20th from 9 AM – 3 PM. It is a great opportunity to come out and volunteer! Volunteers serve in 2 hour shifts at the Walmart of their choosing. Fort Pierce Central High School student Valerie Collins won 4th place for poetry in the National Beta Club competition in Oklahoma! Valerie was joined by thousands of other students at the 2019 National Convention for Beta Clubs around the world. This convention offers a unique experience for Beta members to gather and collaborate on project ideas as well as share academic and leadership abilities with peers from around the globe.
