The students in Ms. Quinn’s K-5 ESE class, at Oak Hammock K- 8, learned about the life cycle of the butterfly. After exploring the butterfly garden on campus, the class watched as their caterpillars became chrysalides. Students created models of the butterfly life cycle with pasta and made predictions about the color of their butterflies. The class has been patiently waiting and watching the chrysalides metamorphosis into butterflies to determine which of them made the correct color prediction.
Central’s Beach Volleyball Makes a First Appearance in State Tournament! Congratulations to the Cobra Beach Volleyball team who competed in the Florida High School Beach Volleyball State Championships this past Friday and Saturday in Tavares! Players include Presley Murray, Kendra Brown, Riley Wyatt, Maya Chase, Kailani Zezas, Kaleigh Becton, Kadiann Perry, Katie-Rose Wohlbold, Delaney Bolbach, and Lauren Woolley with Coach Quigley leading all the way! Lincoln Park Academy student, Nittiya Boyce, 7th grade, placed third in the “Inlet 100th Anniversary Student Art Contest”. The contest was sponsored by the Fort Pierce Lions Club. They were inspired to hold a contest to celebrate the inlet because children are the future keepers of our environment. They hope that this celebration will motivate students to be good stewards of our environment including our waterways and local sea life. Student Government and Student Council planned, organized and executed a field day event for the senior class of 2021. Students groups were paired with other teams to compete in activities that included relay races, obstacle courses, tug-o-war, and kickball games. Students were also competing against a Faculty and Staff team for a chance to win the overall field day. In the end, the Faculty and Staff team WON but the seniors put up a great fight!

Middle school artists just finished a unit on digital art. Students were encouraged to pick a woman either real or fictional who has inspired them for Women’s History Month to digitally draw and paint. Some artists chose to pick a family member, others a famous inspirational woman and others a fictional character that they idolize. Students learned how to use graphic design tools like pens, brushes and layers to create their portraits.
Congratulations to CAST first grader, Gianna Grasso, for winning the annual “Drop Savers” Poster contest. April is Water Conservation Month and Port St. Lucie Utilities Systems invited St. Lucie County K-12 students to participate in the 5th annual 2021 Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest. The purpose of the contest is to raise awareness as well as educate young people on the importance of saving water. Only one student was selected from each grade and Gianna won! We celebrated her on the CAST morning announcements.
Students in Mrs. McKenna’s class put their research and writing skills to the test. Their research began by brainstorming different animals that can be found in the ocean. Each student was able to choose the ocean animal that sparked their interest most. They spent many days gathering research on their animal through books, websites and videos. After many rough drafts, the final drafts were written and illustrations were drawn. The outcome – THEY ARE PUBLISHED AUTHORS!!!
Morningside elementary continues to allow creative expression in the classroom! Students in Mrs. Moore’s third grade class are reading the book “Out of my Mind” where the main character Melody sees color when she hears music. After the Reading FSA, students were allowed to spread out on the floor and colored to the sound of fast and slow music by classical composers. At St. Lucie West K-8 School, Mrs. Denise Eldridge’s Art classes have been focusing on Renaissance Art, Impressionism, Op Art, warm/cool movement, and the color wheel. Students have been emulating famous pictures and creating originals to learn the proper techniques. Port St. Lucie High’s Building Construction Technologies students hosted a virtual field trip for Mr. Kevin Fess’s students at Northport K-8. The high school students highlighted the skills learned and equipment used in their program. The 8th graders asked great questions while sitting in their middle school classroom! FPC Students Positively Rock! The 7th period students of Ms. Dowdy and Mrs. Santoro joined the week of April 12-16 for a uniquely positive community building project! Kindness Rocks was an afternoon alternative for students that had testing in the morning. Students were encouraged to paint their kindness designs then hide the colorful rocks around campus for others to find. On Thursday, April 15th both classes (approx. 60 students) placed over 100 rocks all over campus. Change of Command Ceremony On Wednesday, April 21st, the Jaguar Battalion conducted its annual Change of Command Ceremony. It is a ceremony where the Cadet Battalion Commander and the Cadet Command Sergeant Major positions are transferred to the upcoming leadership for the following year. The outgoing Battalion commander, Cadet Lieutenant Lawrence Moleon-Matthews relinquished his position to the incoming battalion commander, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Alexis Wilson. Cadet Command Sergeant Major Mery Fuentes relinquished her position to Cadet Command Sergeant Major Devin Callwood.
Did you know? Students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of traveling by car. That’s because school buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road; they’re designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries. All SLPS buses are equipped with 3 point lap-shoulder seat belts, and Florida law requires that students who are riding on a bus equipped with seat belts must wear the belts. For all the emerging scientists, Ms. Jackson shares some background knowledge. Each individual cell in an organism has a copy of the DNA pattern used to reproduce cells. Usually, DNA is combined within the cell, so it cannot be seen or observed. However, when a mixture of dish soap, salt, and strawberry pulp are combined, the strawberry cells are broken down into individual parts. Students in Mrs. Roti’s third grade classroom practice reading and interpreting line plots by making a life-size version with their classmates. They were able to solve one and two step problems and draw conclusions from the family data recorded in their interactive notebooks.
