For 35 years the Young Floridian Scholarship program has honored the most stellar high school seniors in St. Lucie County. Currently run through the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce Foundation, this community-supported program awards scholarships to deserving students with pomp and circumstance at an annual awards ceremony. This year’s winners were announced onstage, the evening of February 20th at Indian River State College’s McAlpin Fine Arts Center. Join us for the 2nd Annual Student Culinary Cook-Off, a collaboration of Child Nutrition Services and the Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts Program.  The purpose of the event is for our student chefs in the Middle School and High School Culinary Arts Program to create enticing entrees that their peers would enjoy while following the USDA guidelines for the National School Lunch Program.  The winning entrée will be placed on the menu for the 2019-2020 school year. Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker requested the Board’s endorsement of the “First Vote Week” Proclamation for March 11-15, 2019, that upholds a non-partisan, classroom-based voter education, registration and citizenship program conducted in Social Studies and American Government classes for high school students. The goal of the Supervisor of Elections is to give every student the opportunity to register to vote at age 18 or pre-register at age 16 and 17.  The Supervisor of Elections and her staff will be on high school campuses to assist students and teachers with voter registration in support of the First Vote program.

The School Board joins Governor Ron DeSantis in extending greetings and best wishes to all observing March 25, 2019 as Medal of Honor Day in Florida. Lincoln Park Academy Principal Henry Sanabria (former U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant) and Port St. Lucie High School Principal Adrian Ocampo (former U.S. Marine Lance Corporal) read the Proclamation. All grade levels in public schools are encouraged to coordinate instruction that encourages patriotism and commemorates Medal of Honor Day.

This is a friendly reminder that Monday, March 18th through Friday, March 22nd is Spring Break. Faculty and staff return on Monday, March 25th for a workday. Students return on Tuesday, March 26th. Please note that 12 month personnel work March 18 – March 22. All students and staff will resume a regular schedule on Tuesday March 26th. St. Lucie Public Schools put together an energy advisory board, consisting of vendors, engineers, district staff, utility company personnel, architects, engineers, school board members and others, to address ways to reduce utility costs. Rather than just considering individual schools with immediate needs, the group outlined a long-term plan for the entire district, looking at systems that would need to be replaced in five, ten and fifteen years. They evaluated their replacement vs repair options, taking into account maintenance expenses and the age of the chillers, and analyzed life cycle costs of replacement chillers.
