Our team of 15 brave and beautiful girls will participate in Heart & Sole, a physical activity-based positive youth development program that addresses the social, mental and emotional challenges particular to middle school girls. Southport Middle School eighth grade students participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, an assessment also known as NAEP or The Nation’s Report Card. According to NAEP, the results of the assessment are a way to show what students nationwide know and can do in different subjects. The results provide educators, policymakers, elected officials and parents across the country with invaluable information regarding what students their age are learning. Southport Middle School is Running Full STEAM Ahead! Southport Middle School presented an amazing night of events on December 19th across the school campus for our students and families. The South Florida Science Museum from West Palm Beach hosted a STEAM event with 20 interactive high-tech activities including a 3D Printer, Virtual Reality Headsets, Lego Mindstorm activities, Robots, Roller Coasters, Legos and more!  Student volunteers from St. Lucie West Centennial High School and Southport staff assisted with the activities and students were thrilled with the exciting learning experience! Students at Southport Middle School celebrated World Kindness Day all week long. The National Junior Honor Society started each day with kindness quotes on the morning news show. They passed around kindness bracelets that included random acts of kindness. They also handed out kind cheerful notes to teachers and students throughout the week. Southport Middle School’s sixth grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at our annual Sixth Grade Student Retreat. This year’s theme was respect. To begin the day, students met in the gym to give each other positive affirmations in an unusual game of “musical” chairs. They were then split into small groups with adult team leaders and sent out to participate in various team building activities throughout the day to play games and take part in small group discussions. For the past 20 years, Southport Middle School has proudly celebrated the kinship and diversity among the school’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students in Mr. Dana S. Hochberg’s class. This year over 40 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade ESOL students participated in the multicultural event and represented over 15 countries. In addition to a delectable multinational feast, students presented individual research-based learning projects involving authentic naval air and vessel hats.  Seventh grader Thekeyah Antiola chose the USS Shenandoah AD-44. It all began with an exciting announcement in early January to Mrs. Dusash’s Exceptional Student Education class that all of her students would have an important part to play in the upcoming drama production of The Jungle Book for Kids. Parents, students, and families who attended Southport’s annual Family Literacy Night enjoyed a great night of music, games, food, and fun. Literacy teachers planned activities like Reading Rocks, Beat the Clock, and Musical Literacy while others served pizza and popcorn — all to provide families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encourage kids to read. Follow St. Lucie County WeatherSTEM at Southport Middle School for up-to-date local weather. The Southport Middle School WeatherSTEM Unit is an integration of weather sensors that collects real-time atmospheric data and is available on the stlucie.weatherstem.com/spm  website or mobile app. The WeatherSTEM unit was donated to Southport through a grant by Meteorologist Edward Mansouri, CEO of Ucompass in Tallahassee. WeatherSTEM provides weather data to anyone with Internet access. The WeatherSTEM unit features updated radar, a cloud camera that takes a snapshot once per minute, as well as wind and tide information. Principal “Effie” Nicole Telese officiated Southport Middle School’s first annual Hunger Games Math Competition and Pep Rally. Tributes from 12 districts competed to be the first to solve and answer word problems that were displayed for the packed gymnasium. Each tribute was chosen to represent their district after the course of a week of classroom competition and rigorous math review activities. Southport’s 6th grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at our first annual Student Retreat. Students participated in several activities and games throughout the day, as well as small group discussions where they learned about each other’s likes and dislikes. In addition to writing motivational letters to themselves (which will be given back to them during the school year), they received Palanca letters, which are letters of encouragement from teachers, staff, and family members. Southport Middle School had its first Career Day event on Thursday, October 8, 2015. Volunteers throughout the community came to present their careers to our 7th and 8th grade students. Presentations were job-fair style and  volunteers each had a designated table or assigned area where they spoke about their area of expertise. Students were able to walk through and view each of the displays. They were given advice and learned what educational training and personal skills are necessary in each field, and what a typical day is like through games and presentations. Each year the Florida School Nutrition Association honors school food service nutrition professionals with the Nutrition Award. The award recognizes the professionals that increase enthusiasm, desire, development, and implementation of nutrition education activities that reach every region, district, and school in Florida. This year, Cafeteria Manager Eileen Kielbasa and her staff claimed the Region 6 Nutrition Award for the state of Florida for the the third time. Southport Middle School parents and family members gathered with students to celebrate the formal induction to National Junior Honor Society. Inductees received their membership certificate, card and pin, and recited the membership pledge, led by the current chapter President Nikolas Brooksbank and Vice President Annery Abreu. The ceremony was followed by a lovely luncheon that was enjoyed by everyone. Pictured are the 2015 inductees, graduating NJHS members, along with Guidance Counselor and NJHS Advisor Kristin Alvarez.

Sixth grade students Ainsley Bent and Allysha Lillard lead the way through Southport Middle School’s Tunnel of Hope upon return from Spring Break. Students were pleasantly surprised when the entire Southport staff was there to welcome them with signs, high fives, and encouraging words.  The Treasure Hunters also included the City of Port St. Lucie Police Chief John Bolduc, as well as staff from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, who greeted students and provided support for all Kids at Hope.
