The Florida Department of Education presents the Golden and Silver School Awards to recognize exemplary programs, which promote parent and community involvement in education. The Golden School Award recognizes elementary, secondary and adult schools that meet the following criteria: A minimum of 80 percent of the school staff participated in training related to school volunteerism. A school volunteer coordinator is designated for recruitment, placement, training and supervision of school volunteers. The Five Star School Award was created by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council and is presented annually to those schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. In order to earn Five Star School recognition, a school must show documentation that it has achieved 100 percent of the established criteria in the following categories. Schools must also earn a grade of “C” or above, or school improvement rating of “maintaining or improving” for the year of nomination. Educators can apply for a $100.00 innovative grant for a project that will add to efficient and effective teaching to enhance student learning. What a first rate presentation by Lorena Wilson’s third grade Rising Stars! Students researched a famous Black American using several sources. They also made program guides and actual models of each famous American. Students then presented their oral information using note cards to visiting classes, parents, administration and other special guests. Students became teachers for the afternoon and really demonstrated authentic and intriguing information. On February 9th, 2017, the Panther Battalion completed the second round of the Junior Leadership Academic Bowl (JLAB). They successfully scored an 82% overall and showed great improvement and commitment to make it to the next round. They worked together answering different questions on the verbal, math, and science sections of the timed test. The team was composed of the Cadets Nathen Andrews, Jennifer Soto, Joel Flores, and Sebastian Loschin. They are now awaiting their results to find out if they made it to the third round which will be held in Washington, D.C.
