State Rep. Larry Lee Jr. from District 84 took time out of his busy schedule to speak to Mr. Seabury’s Civics class at Lincoln Park Academy on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014. State Rep. Lee shared his personal story with the students from the time he graduated high school until he was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently running for re-election. Port Saint Lucie High School’s JROTC Raider Team traveled to Atlantic High School and competed in a Raider Challenge. The competition consisted of 500 push-ups, 500 sit-ups, 75 pull-ups total for the whole team, a ½ mile 150lb litter carry, a tire flip with weight ranging from 250lbs to 500lbs, a Rope Bridge, and 32 sandbags. Port Saint Lucie High placed in 3rd against 14 other teams with a time of 32:40. It was a close competition with the difference between us and 1st place was only 5 seconds. It was a tough course but our raiders did amazing.

Northport K-8 School gladly participates each year in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Saint Lucie County “Bowling For Kid’s Sake!” The school is so appreciative of the excellent work that the organization produces in the school to help raise the achievement level of selected students in kindergarten through third grade. The mentors and the AmeriCorps tutors visit the school on a daily basis to assist the teachers and students and help to raise the bar for student success. This summer Weatherbee encouraged their students to read a variety of books.  The school was open to take quizzes on their books and they were required to complete a summer reading packet.  Students who returned their packets were treated to a pizza luncheon in the Media Center.  Three of our students appear here;  Zamorah Owens, Casey Chilton, and Melissa Francois.

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition held a Volunteer/Business Partner Orientation on Tuesday, September 16th.  Volunteers and Business Partners were oriented to the application process and responsibilities of being a volunteer for St. Lucie County and Palm Pointe.  Volunteers jumped right in and signed up for events while business partners, Sweetcakes and Bagel Brothers, donated scrumptious breakfast goodies!   Everyone working together…that’s the Pointe.  Pictured is Karol Carvelli as she explains all about being a volunteer.  

Cathy Odom (media specialist) and JoAnn Aguila (media clerk) invited Ms. Anderson’s 7th grade science students into the media center for a lesson on invasive species in Florida.  The students learned about the invasive species that are causing problems in Florida.  The students discussed what they could do to solve the problem.  Then the students played a game where they were given a native species card and six blank cards.  Then a card was drawn with survival factors.  The students had to tell if the survival factor had an effect on their species.  If it did,  they lost one of the … Read More

As part of their math curriculum, Shannon Johnson’s third grade class at Allapattah Flats K-8 school recently started learning strategies for multiplying single digit numbers.  The students have learned how to use equal groups, arrays, and number lines in order to solve a multiplication problem.  Students created number lines on their desks and used them to show their thinking. The Kindergarten classes at Frances K. Sweet had a busy week studying Community Helpers.  Each day they had members of our community visit the school to share how they help us.  Officer Pratt from the Port St. Lucie Police Department shared his gear and discussed safety tips.  Melanie Francisco’s class especially liked the flashing lights and loud sirens from his awesome patrol car.

Northport K-8 School Media Center has developed and initiated a brand new program at the school that teaches and promotes leadership skills and training through a program called “Northport Leadership Summit.”. The Northport “Leadership Summit” will be held monthly and will showcase and spotlight community leaders. The very first summit was planned by Media Specialist, Lynne Gruszka in collaboration with Linda Cox, Fort Pierce City Clerk and Karen Sweeney, District Aide to Florida State Representative, Gayle Harrell. Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently celebrated their first Citizen of the Month awards. These students go above and beyond the expectations of the classroom and school. Northport K-8 School honors and supports all who are fighting the courageous battle against Sickle Cell Disease this month. Awareness as a school community is being raised by instructor, Marie Solide whose daughter Kookie died of Sickle Cell Anemia very recently. On October 8, Northport community will wear red clothing and donate to the cause by purchasing bracelets in honor of the many lives lost. The proceeds of the purchase of the bracelet will be presented to Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Anemia in the name of Northport K-8 School and Kookie. Mr. Kline’s technology class researched and tested aerodynamics.  First, the students did research of wing design, and which type of wing would lead to the best result (most distance).  Then, they shared thier research via powerpoint with the rest of the class.  Finally, they tested their research. Forest Grove Middle School faculty and staff participated in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake Event on Saturday, September 20th.  Thank you to all of the donations to a great cause.

Kindergartners in Melanie Francisco’s Class at F.K.Sweet Magnet School related to The Little Red Hen’s lesson about working together in order to enjoy the final product.   The students helped their teacher make cupcakes and then they were able to frost them and eat them as a reward for their efforts.  Anthony Crouse and Thomas Ham stopped working just long enough to smile for the camera.
