Go Team, Go!!! There was a lot to cheer about during Mariposa’s PBIS Wear Your Favorite Sport Shirt or Jersey Day. It was a grand slam! For 10 Butterfly Bucks, students could wear their favorite sports team shirt or jersey to school. There was no fumbling with that as many excited students wore their shirts proudly. Students in Mrs. Logue’s fifth grade science class at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts investigated four different chemical reactions during a class lab.  Students were able to describe the basic physical properties of matter, make careful observations, and identify common signals that a chemical reaction had occurred including a color change, an endothermic reaction, an exothermic reaction, and a gas release.

Manatee Academy was fortunate to have the dynamic Patty Mayer from our local Red Cross speak to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes.  Debbie Remington,  Manatee’s media specialist organized the event. The Pillowcase Project is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3 – 5 which teaches students about personal and family preparedness, local hazards, and basic coping skills. Generally given as a 40-minute presentation by Red Cross volunteers, the program leads students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Raider team competed in Fort Pierce Westwood’s Raider Competition against 17 teams from 7 other schools. The competition consisted of six events: 3 mile team run, Cross Country Rescue, The Raider Fitness Challenge, 200lb tire flip over a 100-meter course, an obstacle course and the One-Rope Bridge event. Before the Cross Country Rescue, everyone takes a written first aid test, during the event the team simulates a casualty by carrying an 80-120lb stretcher over a mile long course while wearing three 30lb ruck sacks. Manatee Academy’s Pre-Vet class organized a fantastic school-wide collection program this year for “Save the Chimps,” a local animal sanctuary that cares for about 300 rescued chimpanzees. Students donated over 535 items to this local organization. The goal of the non-profit animal sanctuary is to provide endangered chimpanzees a private, comfortable existence in an environment which simulates a natural habitat as closely as possible. Every chimp costs $16,000 per year to support, and chimps live to an old age of 80 years on average. The month of October has been designated “Bullying Prevention Month” and is recognized by Northport K-8 School as well as Saint Lucie Public Schools.  Northport is thrilled to take part in such an important and vital issue. Bullying can become pervasive if left unchecked. The Saint Lucie Public Schools and the Northport community are taking the bull by the horns and working in conjunction with parents, community members, bullying specialists, deans, teachers, school staff and administration to fight against the scourge of bullying in schools. On Thursday evening, SGA parents attended the “A Day in the Life of an SGA Scholar” Parent Night. Parents began their journey in the audeteria where they learned about the Title I program.  Also, they were excited about the announcement of the principal’s reading challenge. When the SGA students reach 250,000,000 reading steps, Ms. Wilke will do a cheer leading routine. After the initial session, parents made their way to their student’s pod to experience what their scholar does during their academic day.  Students were excited to showcase their work.
