Thank you to ALL of our dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles, foster parents, and male role models for bringing your child to school at Lakewood Park Elementary. We had 138 male role models attend! Way to go Lakewood Park!!
Dads Take Your Child To School Day was a huge success at Gaines Academy. Fathers and other male role models streamed into Gaines Academy on Wednesday morning. They were treated to donuts and an inspirational message followed by smiles and laughter as they created a vision board with their child. Before leaving, the men signed the pledge to support and encourage their children’s success in school.
“Recycled MONSTERS were the theme at Manatee Academy in preparation for the upcoming MONSTER Book Fair next week. Students also had to Guess How Many Eyeballs in a fish tank to get a free Book Fair book. A MONSTER PUMPKIN contest and Door Decorating contest enabled teachers to join the fun and earn gift certificates worth $50.00 and $100.00 respectively in Book Fair goodies! Northport middle grades students in Tracy Lejeune, Susan Matteson and Susan Smith’s classes participated in an activity filled with dark humor by attending a funeral in the school’s media center for “Dead” words. Miss Dewey’s classroom won a grant for Reflex Math Fact Fluency program. The students have been using the program now for a week and are so eager for math time. Reflex is game-based and highly motivational so students enjoy the learning process. Reflex helps students of all ability levels to develop fluency with their basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Northport K-8 middle grades students from the Sharks, Dolphins, Stingrays, and Mariner teams and their teachers met in the Northport Media Center recently for an important program. Students welcomed a local man with a very powerful message and a story that students can relate to in some way about bullying and coming together as a community to stop the vicious cycle of bullying. On September 26, 2015 , a good time was had by all at the Superplay USA! The teams put on their neon attire and did some cosmic bowling, all in good fun to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Team leaders and department chairs at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition are participating in a “fishbowl” activity. Fourth grade teachers shared recent test results on the Summative Assessment Reporting form and modeled the process of analyzing data. They discussed root causes of proficiency and non-proficiency and worked to create a plan of action for student success.
Bank of America provided the St. Lucie Education Foundation with a $6,000 grant to be used toward programs that help at-risk students in grades 9-12 with an intervention and life skills grant. The Foundation has also applied for matching funds through the school district’s Education Foundation Matching Grant Funds Program. This means that together, Bank of America and the Foundation will provide $12,000 towards the goal of helping students develop life skills, improve test scores, raise GPAs, and improve student achievement. Port Saint Lucie High School’s JROTC Raider Team traveled to Atlantic High School to compete in a Raider Challenge. The competition consisted of back to back events starting with Rope Bridge and a physical fitness test (PT). During the PT test the team had to complete a total of 500 push-ups, 500 sit-ups, and 85 pull-ups. The rest of the events consisted of a ¾ mile litter carry with 80lbs of weight, move 40 20lb sandbags from one point to another, flip a 350lb tire 100 yards, and finish by running a mile to the finish line. The 5th graders at Mariposa Elementary in Ms. Kathy Guntow’s class are investigating the proper use of scientific tools. The students rotate through stations that measure volume, mass, length, time, and temperature. They also explore how to use microscopes and hand lenses to complete their science measurement tools activity. Toni Serra, Dylan Baugh, and Crystal Headley are cooperatively working with a classroom scale.
Gaines Academy will host a Doughnuts with Dad Day this Wednesday September 30th at 8am in the SGA Auditeria. Students will have doughnuts with Dad (or any honorary dad or male role model). Then, they will create a special project with Dad for a school-wide display. Come on out, Dads!
Ms. Brenda Hoskin from Southeastern Guide Dogs visited Frances K. Sweet third graders after they read Saving Buster, Aero & Officer Mike, and Good Dogs, Guide Dogs. Ms. Hoskins, the handler, brought her guide dog, Molly, and discussed how Molly was trained and what she is responsible for. The boys and girls were quite intrigued!
Fourth grade students at Frances K. Sweet explored the Law of Conservation of Mass by demonstrating that the mass of a whole object is always the same as the sum of the masses of its parts by finding the percentage of a banana that is edible. The Fort Pierce Westwood JROTC Panther Battalion Honor Guard provides a Saber Arch for the Homecoming Court on the 25th of September during halftime activities of the Westwood vs Treasure Coast football game. As dawn broke on the morning of Saturday, September 19, 2015, the Fort Pierce Central High JROTC Cobra Battalion held their annual beach cleanup at Pepper Park on North A1A in Fort Pierce. The Fort Pierce Central High JROTC Cobra Battalion is dedicated to helping maintain a clean environment and this event was just one in a series of Cobra Battalion events scheduled for this year that will help achieve that goal. The SGA Red & Gold Tie event was an amazing success. Gentlemen from around the county supported Sam Gaines Academy middle school students at the event. These community leaders provided practical tips to the young men on how to tie a tie and offered professional advice on being a successful person. Great relationships were formed and positive expectations were established.
