FortifyFL – a new safety app is LIVE. Any student, educator, parent or member of the public can report school safety concerns directly to law enforcement and school administrators anonymously and easily through the FortifyFL app or www.getfortifyfl.com. The Florida Legislature directed this tool’s development in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. Fort Pierce Westwood’s Tuesday Leadership Club Service Project

Fort Pierce Westwood’s Tuesday Leadership Club (TLC) met for their first 2017/18 service project. TLC members stuffed 50 donated backpacks with school supplies for Panther students in need. TLC is a student driven group which develops positive leadership and characteristics to enhance themselves, their school and their community at large. The students involved with this service project are Trey Doilvien, Kenneshia Murriel, Matilde Mendez, Vanessa Vazquez, Kristina Thomas, Alvin Paschal, and Pharah St. Louis. A big “Congratulations!” goes out to the (32) Cadets from our Army JROTC Program who were formally recognized at the annual End of the Year Awards Ceremony on April 9th. First, second, third, and fourth-year Cadets alike were presented with both leadership and academic awards, while others were promoted up in the ranks, for their recent efforts on the semi-annual promotion board. Each year, one Senior from each Culinary Arts Program in the District is paired with one Indian River State College Culinary student. Fort Pierce Westwood entered the competition eager to bring their enthusiasm and love of cooking to this event. Each Team then creates a dish that they think will “WOW” the 5 judges at the Sunshine Kitchen Competition and are rated on presentation, taste, and sanitation. Fort Pierce Westwood Veterinary Students Support Rescue Effort

Fort Pierce Westwood Veterinary students were at the St. Lucie International Airport on October 5th to support in the arrival of a plane from Puerto Rico carrying animals in need of homes and care. The veterinary students along with their teacher, Whitney Uribe, helped to unload the animals from the plane, unload them from their carriers for examination, as well as support the veterinarian with their examinations. That support included completing paperwork, getting the medication requested by the vet ready, as well as the vaccines as requested by the vet. Fort Pierce Westwood Veterinary Assisting CTE Update

Our students have been off to a busy start this year. Local veterinarians Dr. Adams and Dr. Smith from Midway Veterinary Hospital visited to perform annual exams on our classroom cats, giving students hands-on experience with physical exams. We also kicked off our Panther Paws Friday Pup Spa Days, where staff bring their dogs for baths, grooming, and playtime. Fort Pierce Westwood Veterinary Assisting Advisory Board

Fort Pierce Westwood Academy, the W.E.S.T. Prep Magnet’s Brittany Shoun along with Westwood Administration and District CTE Program Specialists met with local veterinarians and veterinary technicians to plan hands-on labs for the Westwood Vet Assisting students.  The Veterinary Assisting facility is revamping the surgical suite and laboratory areas. Fort Pierce Westwood Teacher Receives National Recognition

Celestine Dorsey, a local teacher from Fort Pierce Westwood High school, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 21 NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a federal agency that each year supports summer study opportunities so that teachers can work with experts in humanities disciplines. Fort Pierce Westwood Students Attend Career Fair at Fort Pierce Yacht Club

Students from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy attended the Chart Your Course Maritime and Marine Career Expo at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club on Thursday, February 22nd. Students learned about a variety of career opportunities in Fort Pierce and the Treasure Coast, highlighted by hands-on activities, panel discussions, and demonstrations from a variety of local businesses and the U.S. Coast Guard. Lots of useful job and career expectations and opportunities were shared with all.

Fort Pierce Westwood Senior Wins $1,000 Grant

Nicole Thomas, a senior at Fort Pierce Westwood High School, received a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) grant from the National Future Farmers Association (FFA) for a Breeding gilt (a female pig that has not yet given birth). Nicole applied for the grant because she is starting to breed gilt’s for the local FFA and 4-H. She hopes to provide a service to 4-H and FFA students to be able to purchase their show pigs from a local breeder for the County Fair. On Friday, April 19th, the Cadets from the Fort Pierce Westwood Army JROTC put the lid on a long and demanding year of extracurricular commitments and teamwork-based missions with their Annual Cadet Ball, held at the historical 500 Orange Event Hall in Fort Pierce. HUGE praise goes out to the Westwood Army JROTC Raider Team who volunteered their Saturday, on April 6th, to compete in the 3rd Annual “Battle of the Branches” charity event held at the Florida Tech Challenge Course, in Fellsmere. The event is sponsored by Do You Give a Ruck? (DYGAR) which is a local veteran-run non-profit organization.  100% of the money that is raised at this annual event (from entries and donations) is used to help build homes for local homeless veterans and their families. Huge praise goes out to the (18) Cadets from our Army JROTC Program who attended the annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge Camp at the Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation in Jupiter from 17-20 FEB.  Over (250) Cadets from multiple Treasure Coast High Schools converged on the Camp for (4) days of rigorous training and team-building exercises to help them become tougher and more efficient leaders.  Cadets slept in tents (in a wilderness environment) and had very limited comfort resources at their disposal.
