Principal “Effie” Nicole Telese officiated Southport Middle School’s first annual Hunger Games Math Competition and Pep Rally. Tributes from 12 districts competed to be the first to solve and answer word problems that were displayed for the packed gymnasium. Each tribute was chosen to represent their district after the course of a week of classroom competition and rigorous math review activities. Students, one girl and one boy, from every sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math class who earned the most points throughout the week, were chosen as the tribute to represent their district. Nicole Thomas, a senior at Fort Pierce Westwood High School, received a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) grant from the National Future Farmers Association (FFA) for a Breeding gilt (a female pig that has not yet given birth). Nicole applied for the grant because she is starting to breed gilt’s for the local FFA and 4-H. She hopes to provide a service to 4-H and FFA students to be able to purchase their show pigs from a local breeder for the County Fair. Mariposa students and staff held a surprise “tunnel of support” for students taking the FSA test to show the students how proud we are of their hard work and to help motivate them to do their best. Younger students from each class made signs and posters encouraging their peers.  Students lined up on each side of the outside hallways with their signs. They cheered and held up their signs while the students walked through the tunnel.  This event meant a great deal to the students. Celestine Dorsey, a local teacher from Fort Pierce Westwood High school, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 21 NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a federal agency that each year supports summer study opportunities so that teachers can work with experts in humanities disciplines. WFLM 104.5 radio station has selected our student – Tiara Evans as their Young Superstar of the week. This selection is based upon academic grades, primarily A and B ratings. She has earned $50 cash, along with name and school recognition announced during broadcasting.

River Edge Elementary hosted an ArtWalk for Hope and Bingo for Books Family Event on Thursday, April 7. Students created “hopeful” images on sidewalks around the entire school. From flowers to pizza to rainbows students were given creative freedom to share their ideas of HOPE. Parents came at 6 pm to take in all their student’s artwork, then were invited into the cafeteria and greeted with an “artful” treat provided by the PTO. Bingo for Books began at 6:30 pm with their parents, students played round after round in hopes of winning a book!

Mrs. Marino, a third grade teacher at Savanna Ridge Elementary School, was a Target Field Trip Grant recipient for the 2015/16 school year.  Therefore, third grade students benefited by enjoying a fantastic field trip to Heathcote Botanical Gardens as they explored the life of plants. They learned about the basic structures in plants, how plants respond to stimuli, and understood how plants use the sun, air, and water to make their own food. The kindergarten classes at White City Elementary have been studying community helpers. To culminate their units, students were visited by Leland Karlson, a Fort Pierce Utilities Authority employee. Mr. Karlson visited each classroom, and explained the dangers of playing with kites by electrical wires. He also told the students that they should report any wires that are on the ground to an adult and not touch them. Mr. Karlson brought with him a giant display. Students were able to see up close the dangers of playing on or around power lines.

Staff at Savanna Ridge Elementary enjoyed supporting Relay for Life at the Annual Walk at Tradition Stadium in St. Lucie West.  Staff members enjoyed taking part in various activities throughout the year to fund-raise for the school Relay for Life team such as Coins for Cancer.

Students from Mrs. Erica Anderson’s 5th grade class who are a part of Mrs. Jennifer Bozone’s small group each chose a book to read over Spring Break. They were given the creative task to create a visual representation of their favorite scene from the book.    

Isabella Sierra, kindergartner at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition, collected over 400 food items for her sixth birthday party instead of gifts for herself. The items were donated to the school’s “Grace Packs” program. This program helps provide weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply, relieving the burden many of these children endure by being hungry. She is a role model student and example that love provides.  A huge thank you to this generous student!
