Donuts and flowers among other icons were laid out as future name tags to be decorated by students in Mrs. Coffer’s AP Spanish class. “We were not sure exactly what the name tags were going to be used for, but we liked decorating them,” explains Senior Astrid Ayala-Arevalo, pictured above with Mrs. Coffer. Mr. Luke Hall was the recipient of a STAR Award at the September Board Meeting based upon the recommendation of one of his students’ parents who lauded his efforts to support her son as well as the other members of the positive band program. Mr. Hall’s high expectations for success with built-in factors for a safe and respectful environment were key attributes highlighted for this exceptional educator’s recognition.
Fort Pierce Westwood High School hosted its very own Mr. Joseph Lezeau as the guest speaker for the Speakers Bureau Series. Mr. Lezeau spoke about the basic principles that were taught to him by his father. These are two very important resources to have: information and knowledge. For the month of February, the students in the Peer Leadership Program at Weatherbee Elementary had the privilege to meet with State Representative Mr. Larry Lee Jr. This program targeting male African American students is one of the PBS strategies used at Weatherbee Elementary. Each month a male role model from the community comes to address these students in need of extrinsic motivation. On Tuesday January 31st, Lincoln Park Academy’s Caleb Pottorff was notified that he had be named “Gatorade Player of the Year for Cross Country.” Caleb also won the “Mr. Cross Country” award from the Florida Dairy Farmers. Congratulations to Caleb on his recent awards.
October’s School Board Meeting provided an opportunity to spotlight the services of Mr. Brown, a dedicated member of the Transportation Team, who goes the extra mile for his students and our schools. Mr. Brown was recommended for a STAR Award based upon his outstanding service to provide assistance and support for the safe transit of students to and from schools. On various Thursday and Friday nights from January to May, parks in local neighborhoods will host FREE outdoor movies featuring today’s blockbusters and classic family favorites. Movies in the Fort gives residents in all parts of the city an opportunity to engage with their neighbors and community. Fort Pierce is committed to increasing access to family-friendly cultural opportunities, and this new movie series is a perfect example of this work. All movies begin at dusk. Northport K-8 principal Glenn Rustay and assistant principals Bennie Montenegro and Doug Shook, as well as the entire Northport K-8 family and several district staff, welcomed motivational speaker Dr. Adolph Brown III to an inspiring and energizing program for the seventh and eighth graders. Mosaic Digital Academy students in grades 5-8 enjoyed a cross-curricular field trip to the St. Lucie County Regional History Center and St. Lucie County Aquarium. Visiting the past through the eyes of explorers, settlers, and industrialists, students traveled back in time to the turn of the century. A deeper understanding of the industries that helped shape St. Lucie County, such as fishing, pineapple plantations, cattle, and citrus gave students a better understanding of our county’s unique history. On Friday, February 23rd, Mosaic Digital Academy elementary students took a “Trip Through Space” in the Hallstrom Planetarium at IRSC. Professor Jon Bell led students through our solar system and beyond, giving them the opportunity to learn about the sun, moon, and planets; understand black holes and how stars are formed; and explore the Milky Way. Students even had the opportunity to hold a 26-pound space rock!

So much fun at the Oxbow Eco-Center Earth Day Festivities on April 22nd, with our student volunteers, Kyle Thompson (pictured explaining the microscope station with 5th-grade student Ronette), Sydney Saunches-Romero, Jaela English, Aniyah Mathis, Yajaira, and Derica Stewart assisting with the microscope viewing center, the caterpillars, and our trivia game!
