Phases of the Moon at Samuel S. Gaines Academy

Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies’ fourth graders wrapped up their science units for the year with a study of the earth, the moon, and the constellations. Students studied models and the movement of the earth and the moon. Fourth graders depicted the phases of the moon around the earth with a 3D model and took turns demonstrating its movement.

Pharmacy Technician Virtual Advisory Board

Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet’s Pharmacy Technician Educators (Julie-Anne JnPaul and Bailey Renick) participated in a virtual advisory board meeting.  This included representatives from Indian River State College, University of Florida, Crosstown Pharmacy, Career & Technical Education Department, and Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency.

Pharmacy Technician Pre-Apprentices Connected with IRSC’s Apprenticeship

Students from Mrs. Julie-Anne JnPaul’s Pharmacy Technician program at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet, attended a virtual session with Indian River State College (IRSC).  Dr. Jessica Fulton from IRSC spoke with the graduating seniors regarding opportunities for them to continue on their academic-career path as Pharmacy Technicians.  This session included a presentation, question and answer segment, and students were able to leave the session with knowledge and plans for their future!    

Permaculture Garden

Village Green Environmental Studies students explain their roles in maintaining our permaculture garden to special guests including Port St. Lucie Mayor Oravec.  The garden includes food-producing plants from around the world growing in a system that imitates nature and is free from pesticides and herbicides.  The school has multiple ‘farm-to-table’ experiences for students throughout the school year.

Performance Based Preparatory Academy Owl Pellet Dissection Lab

Science students from Ms. Paletti’s and Mr. Clarke’s classes recently explored a fascinating aspect of owl digestion known as casting. Through an engaging video presentation followed by hands‑on classroom instruction, students learned that not everything an owl eats is digested in the usual way.Owls swallow their prey whole, and the indigestible materials—such as bones, fur, feathers, and teeth—are compacted inside the owl’s gizzard. These materials are later regurgitated as a pellet. By carefully dissecting real owl pellets, students were able to identify skeletal remains and reconstruct the diets of owls, applying critical thinking and scientific observation skills.  This interactive lab … Read More

Performance Based Preparatory Academy: First Welding Job Before I Graduate High School

On April 30, 2026, the Welding Program went on a field trip to D&D Welding and Fabrication to witness what goes on in a Fabrication shop and get a taste of the real world. Upon arriving at D&D, all the students were given an introduction by the shop’s Safety Manager and CWI Matt Ruben. Performance Based Academy Creative Science Lab

Mrs. Menezes’s Science students at Performance Based Academy recently participated in a lab project that combined their science knowledge and creative skills. The goal of the project was to reinforce their understanding of the diversity of Florida’s Everglades, and how different animal species adapt to different ecosystems. Students enjoyed the hands-on activity and were able to incorporate their creative and imaginative skills to create clay creatures that inhabit the Everglades. At Mariposa Elementary, fourth grader Jesse Hindman received a perfect score on his third grade math FSA and received a certificate from the Governor for his hard work! People’s Garden Ribbon Cutting Celebration

January 16, 2025, marked a momentous occasion in Fort Pierce as community members, partners, and volunteers gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the People’s Garden. The event celebrated the culmination of hard work and dedication that brought this wonderful project to fruition. Penny Scialdo of SLW Centennial Awarded the Navigator Award

The Treasure Coast Inter-Agency Transition Council gives the Navigation Award to five people from the four-county area.  It is given to those we are leading the way by navigating transition services for supporting the successful transition of persons with disabilities from school to post-graduation.  Penny Scialdo, School-Based ESE Specialist, has always been a proponent of seamless, positive transition for her students.  We appreciate all she has done for the students in St. Lucie Public Schools. A big congratulations to Penny for her outstanding service!    

Pennies for Pasta at Gaines Academy

Students at Gaines Academy generously donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Pennies for Pasta campaign. We surpassed our school goal of $2,000 with a grand total of $2,700 being donated to help local blood cancer patients with their treatments and hopefully find a cure. Ms. Lenaiah Wood’s second grade class collected the most donations and were treated to a delicious luncheon by Olive Garden. Pen Pals Make Great Mentors at Mariposa Elementary

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Michelle Smith’s 2nd grade class teamed up with Mrs. Theresa Delancy’s 3rd grade class for writing!  Every 2nd grader has a 3rd grade pen pal who acts as a writing mentor.  After reading the story The Plump and Perky Turkey, students were asked to imagine that they were a turkey! Together with their pen pals, students had to come up with reasons as to why the turkey should not be eaten on Thanksgiving! Tahlia Sugrim and Abigail Santiago are showing their hard work. Pen Pals at Morningside

Mrs. William’s 5th-grade class at Morningside Elementary is writing to their pen pals! A student’s grandmother is a teacher in another county, and she teaches a younger grade. Through this experience, students are learning about someone who may be different than them but finding ways to share commonality through likes, dislikes, dreams, and fears. Today, students are reading their first letter and writing back. Pretty cool!

Peacock Dental Makes Donation

Peacock Dental in St. Lucie West donated 1,000 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste to support St. Lucie Public Schools’ students experiencing homelessness. The support came after the local business heard about the McKinney Vento program and wanted to be able to provide something for students in our area. St. Lucie Public Schools appreciates this partnership!
