Performance Based Preparatory Academy Owl Pellet Dissection Lab

Science students from Ms. Paletti’s and Mr. Clarke’s classes recently explored a fascinating aspect of owl digestion known as casting. Through an engaging video presentation followed by hands‑on classroom instruction, students learned that not everything an owl eats is digested in the usual way.Owls swallow their prey whole, and the indigestible materials—such as bones, fur, feathers, and teeth—are compacted inside the owl’s gizzard. These materials are later regurgitated as a pellet. By carefully dissecting real owl pellets, students were able to identify skeletal remains and reconstruct the diets of owls, applying critical thinking and scientific observation skills.  This interactive lab … Read More

Manatee Center Field Trip

Mr. Clarke’s science classes at Performance Base Preparatory Academy made a recent trip to the Manatee Center and afterward paid a quick visit to the nearby “Seven Gables House”.  Students first attended an outdoor lecture by Elyse Geraghty, the educational director at the Manatee Center, where they learned about manatee physiology, habitat, and evolutionary development. Afterward, students explored the indoor facility in which they observed, analyzed, and even interacted with some particular displays. Upon conclusion of the indoor tour, Mr. Clarke’s class exited and took a “walking tour” where they were able to observe manatees in their natural environment. Finally, … Read More
