Second Grade Creativity with Context Clues at St. Lucie West K-8

Students in Mrs. Barthell’s second-grade class had a blast practicing context clues today! Each group was given a word and its definition. They worked together to create sentences that included clues to help figure out each word’s meaning (spelling mistakes and all — it’s about the learning process!). Afterward, the class shared their sentences, discussed the clues, and discovered what each word meant. Students did an amazing job collaborating, thinking critically, and having fun while learning! Second Grade Celebrates Other Cultures

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Ms. Schumacher’s 2nd graders at West Gate K-8 rang in the Chinese New Year with their new lanterns. They spent the day learning about China’s culture and customs. They were excited to get their hands on the Chinese alphabet to write to their friends and to decorate their lanterns. They also incorporated math, too! By using rulers, they were able to measure one inch borders around their paper (to know where not to cut!).

Scientific Scavenger Hunt

CAST students in Mrs. Roti’s third-grade class completed a scientific scavenger hunt around their classroom to practice their discovery, observation, and investigative skills. Activities like these are part of CAST’s Cambridge Primary program which is designed to develop young leaders who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged in the learning process through the use of collaboration and inquiry-based approaches.    

Science with Mr. Capozolli at White City Elementary

The Grade 5 students of White City Elementary conducted an investigation and they were able to explain that energy can be transformed into sound energy.  Mr. Capozolli, science resource teacher, provided a hands-on lesson to help students hypothesize, predict, and problem solve.    

Science support team provides Hispanic community tips about science studies

The St. Lucie County School District Science Support team was a guest at the local Spanish language radio station La Gigante 1330 AM to discuss the importance of science in the curriculum. The experts discussed STEM, science projects, the Parent Tips website, and future science brochures in three languages. They also talked about three Hispanic high school students who attended last year’s international science fair, two of whom earned full scholarships, as well as a three-session Science Project Family Night recently at Forest Grove Middle School. Science Parade at MSE

Science costumes give a whole new meaning to Science vocabulary.  On Wednesday, October 29, 2014, students and teachers at Morningside Elementary dressed up as their favorite Science term.  Some of the terms included texture, stars, clouds, the skeletal system, camouflage, atoms and color.  The students paraded through the halls showing their costumes to their fellow school mates.

Science matters to Northport student

Dr. Laura Woodworth, Northport K-8 science instructor, tweaked seventh grade student Grace Buzziz’s interest and provoked an in depth home learning project as Grace surprised Dr. Woodworth with an active and scientifically correct volcano. Grace modeled her volcano with running lava and answered detailed questions from classmates about her scientific inquiry. Grace urged her classmates to start independent scientific projects at home to extend their classroom learning.

Science investigation alive at Mariposa Elementary

Hobe Sound Nature Center came to Mariposa Elementary to educate Mariposa Elementary School students about owls and hawks.  Students became scientists for a day while investigating owl pellets, which are digested food from the owls.  Students were engrossed in this fun and educational activity. 

Science Fair Recognition

The 31st Annual local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Fair was host to over 240 middle and high school student projects. In the wide array of quality projects submitted, judges identified the top projects in each category based on rigorous rubrics accessing content and process. From this academic competition, students’ projects were selected to move on to the state level.  State and International winners were recognized at the May School Board Meeting. Science Classes Learn About Photosynthesis at Palm Pointe

Eighth grade students in Mrs. Huszar’s and Ms. Pulcini’s science classes at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition recently worked with inquiry-based strategies to fully understand how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are dependent on each other. Science Bowl at Village Green

It was a scientific event to remember at Village Green Environmental School as 5th-grade students participated in the annual Science Bowl. This is a true testament that these 5th graders are part of Village Green’s rising scholars, as they originally ended in a three-way tie between Mrs. Corley, Mrs. Smith, and Dr. Venzen’s Homeroom students. In the end, victory was achieved by Dr. Venzen’s “Patriotic Pioneers.” Congratulations to all of our scientific world changers! We are so proud of you!

Schools superintendent visits Gaines Academy

Samuel S. Gaines Academy fourth grade teacher Barbara Bennett asked Superintendent Michael Lannon and other prominent local residents to come in and read to the fourth graders to celebrate Black History Month.  Pictured is Mr. Lannon reading the book Follow the Drinking Gourd and talked about Black History Month.  Students  gathered in the hallway to listen to his story.

Schools superintendent earns most donations to kiss the pig

St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent Genelle Yost garnered the most donations in a month-long fundraising activity to benefit Kids at Hope, a mentoring initiative of the Roundtable of St. Lucie County, earning the right to kiss a pig at the St. Lucie County Fair. Yost exceeded the funds raised by the five other local women community leaders in the contest, and topped the winner of last year’s all-male team in contributions. “I truly wanted to be the one to get to kiss the pig,” Yost remarked, adding appreciation for all of the friends, colleagues and community members who supported her … Read More
