SLW Centennial NJROTC Academic Team Competes in Brain Brawl

Congratulations to the SLW Centennial NJROTC Academic Team!  They competed in the BOCA NJROTC Brain Brawl Competition hosted on Saturday, September  20th, 2025, against 24 other NJROTC teams. Team Alpha consisted of c/PO3 Andrew Witz-Schaffer, c/LT Brandon Ramirez, c/PO1 Jacob Ramos, c/PO1 Eli Ross, and c/PO2 Brody Nestler. They made it through the Quarter-Finals, survived the Semi-Finals, and made it all the way to the Finals.  They finished in 3rd Place and are coming home with the 3rd Place Trophy/Plaque! The SLW Centennial High School’s Navy JROTC “Black Talon” Unit competed in the Lake Howell High School’s NJROTC “Silverhawk” Showdown Drill Meet against 15 other NJRTOC units.  The field meet competition is composed of Academic, Drill, Physical Fitness, and Personnel Inspection.  The SLW Centennial “Black Talon” won 1st Place in the Personnel Inspection portion of the Field Meet Competition! The SLW Centennial Navy JROTC “Black Talon” Navy Eagle Company traveled to Tampa Bay this weekend and competed in the Riverview High School’s NJROTC “Battle of the Sharks” Drill Competition held in Riverview, Florida. The “Black Talon” Company Drill Competition Team earned two trophies during their first Drill Competition of the year! SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Visits Kennedy Space Center

  The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC “Black Talon” Company had a field trip to visit the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday, September 13th, 2023.  Cadets visited various attractions, including the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, the Apollo/Saturn 5 Center, and of course the Gift Shop.   Cadets learned the importance of America’s “Race to the Moon” as well as had fun virtually flying the Space Shuttle.  They look forward to visiting again next year!  

SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Unit Tours Cape Canaveral Coast Guard Station

The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC “Black Talon” Unit toured the Cape Canaveral Cost Guard Station on Monday, March 20th, 2023. The unit toured their Operations and Communications Center and received a brief on the responsibilities and daily operations of the Coast Guard. The Unit also toured the United States Coast Guard Cutters SKIPJACK as well as the CONFIDENCE.  They toured the Navigation Bridge, Engine Room, Galley and Common Spaces. The tour finished with a walk through of the Coast Guard small boat responsible for migrant intervention and narcotic seizures.  

SLW Centennial Navy JROTC Takes Field Trip to Kennedy Space Center

  The SLW Centennial Navy JROTC took an educational Field Trip to the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday, September 16th, 2021. The unit had an outstanding time learning the history of the “space race” by starting their field trip at the Heroes & Legends building featuring the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. The Tour continued to the Apollo/Saturn V Center where they learned about the challenges associated with landing the first man on the moon. SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Qualifies Two Teams for Area 7 (Florida State) Academic Championship

The SLW Centennial High School NAVY JROTC competed in the G. Holmes Braddock High School Brain Brawl Academic Competition, in Miami, on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022. The competition was fierce. 20 teams in total challenged each other in a “Jeopardy” style match where four teams battle each other answering questions for three rounds, followed by quarter-finals and semi-finals. Only the top four teams make it to the finals.   The SLW Centennial Navy JROTC provided a beautiful 50 State Flag backdrop and walkway to honor all of the SLW Centennial senior athletes that will be graduating this year. All Senior Athletes from bowling, cross-country, and golf had the honor of having their names called and their future plans read.  They also got to walk down with family members to receive flowers from Principal Andrea Popwell.   The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC provided a Color Guard for the Navy League Treasure Coast Council.  The Navy League hosted their first meeting of the fiscal year at the Quail Valley River Club in Vero Beach, Florida, celebrating the 246th birthday of the U.S. Navy on Tuesday, October 19th at 11:30 AM. The SLW Centennial High School’s NAVY JROTC “Black Talon” Navy Eagles Company performed the Opening Ceremony Color Guard for the 41st Annual Chili Cook-Off sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. The event took place on Saturday, October 21st, 2023, at the Clover Park “Mets” Stadium in Port St. Lucie, Florida. SLW Centennial Navy JROTC Participates in Toys for Tots

The SLW Centennial High School’s Navy JROTC Navy Eagles “Black Talon” Company volunteered to participate in the Port St. Lucie’s Toys for Tots program.  The “Black Talon” Cadets volunteered to work on December 16th, 17th, 19th, and 20th, 2023, to assist the Toys for Tots program in providing gifts for underprivileged children in the Port Saint Lucie area.  Hopefully they will allow them to have a holiday to remember.  Families that need assistance to provide toys and gifts for their children can reach out to the Toys for Tots program if they need a little help during the holiday season. … Read More

The SLW Centennial High School’s NJROTC Navy Eagles “Black Talon” Academic Team traveled to Nova High School in Davie, Florida on Saturday, December 16th, 2023 to participate in their Nova “Brain Brawl” Academic Challenge.  The Academic Team competed against 15 other NJROTC units from South Florida in a “Jeopardy” type academic competition.  Each unit’s team consists of four members and they compete against three other teams at the same time.  So sixteen students are listening and “buzzing” in to answer questions during a 10 to 15-minute round.
