LWP Field Trip to the Smithsonian Ecosystem Center

Fourth-grade students at Lakewood Park Elementary had an incredible time at the Smithsonian Ecosystem Center. During this field trip, students visited the aquarium, explored the touch tank, and experienced seining. They enjoyed learning and interacting with ocean wildlife!

Manatee K8 Hosts Custodial Appreciation Luncheon

On October 16th, Manatee K8 was host to a luncheon for District custodial employees for Custodial Appreciation Day. A great time was had by all who attended. Events like these not only recognize the incredible work of our custodians but also foster a sense of belonging and appreciation within our school community. SLPS truly appreciates the hard work and dedication of its custodial staff. Thank you for all that you do!

Middle School Students Virtual Field Trip to Agriscience & Veterinarian Technician Programs at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department hosted virtual field trips as a platform to connect students to opportunities within SLPS high schools and increase awareness of college and career pathways.  Middle school students within the district and their teachers went on a virtual field trip to Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet.  The students learned about the career opportunities and pathways available to them including Animal Science, Agriculture Mechanics, and Veterinarian Assistant.  Each program engaged students with virtual demonstrations, classroom and lab tours, and a question-and-answer segment with students in the program.   A special thank you to … Read More

SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Participates in IRON BEAR Physical Fitness Challenge

The SLW Centennial High School’s NAVY JROTC “Black Talon” Company traveled to Brooksville, Florida on Saturday, October 7th, 2023, to participate in the Iron Bear Physical Fitness Challenge hosted by the Central High School NJROTC.   The “Black Talon” Company competed in 13 events: Damage Control, Fire Hose Relay, Agility Course, Mount Suribachi, Hamster Wheel, Tire Flip Relay, Truck Pull, Tug-of-War, 100 Yard Relay, Obstacle Course, Dizzy Izzy, Klackerboards, and the Sea Bag Relay.   The events were challenging, and the cadets had fun competing against 22 other NJROTC units from all across the State of Florida. Career & Technical Education Teachers Completed Professional Learning with Advisory Board, Business Alliances

Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers from multiple programs completed a day of learning with industry and post-secondary institutions for knowledge on industry and workforce updates.  These CTE educators were able to tour the facilities, gain knowledge on the newest state-of-the-art technologies, and learn about what is needed for students to be both career and college ready.  Professional learning took place at Indian River State College (hosted by Natalia Chekhovskaya, Executive Director of Advance Manufacturing) for applied robotics, engineering, manufacturing, industrial biotechnology, agriculture mechanics, outboard marine, and technical design educators from St. Lucie Public Schools. FPC Chorus Performs at Stetson Choral Festival

An elite eight Cobra Chorus members joined their director Mr. Martinez at Stetson University’s Choral Festival on October 6th and 7th. What started out as an early morning road trip to Deland, Florida became a trip of a lifetime. Over two days, chorus students worked with Stetson’s husband and wife team choral directors to workshop four arrangements at the festival’s conclusion. Singing for Stetson choirs and listening to Stetson students perform set an atmosphere of engagement, new connections, and mutual admiration. Garden of Shadows Cobra Nation is beaming with pride for our Band Director Joshua Daniels and our Marching Cobras being honored as the GRAND CHAMPIONS of the 2023 42nd Annual Crown Jewel Marching Band Competition! All together our students brought home the Sheila Knight Sammon’s Memorial Award for Best Overall Band in Show. The Marching Cobras also earned Best in Class Music and Visual Performance, Best in Platinum Class, and an overall Superior for Auxiliary and for the Band as a whole! Culinary Cobras Participate in Top Tier Event! The Fort Pierce Central High School Culinary Department’s advanced class contributed significantly to the fundraising event at Hutchinson Shores Resort and Spa in Jensen Beach on October 19, 2023. This event was an initiative sponsored by the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Treasure Coast Chapter to raise money for high school scholarships across the Treasure Coast. Mrs. Taufa’s Geometry Class just completed a unit of study on Transformations. They learned that a transformation is a manipulation of a geometric shape or formula that maps the shape or formula from its preimage, or original position, to its image, or after-transformation position. Mosaic Owls took this knowledge into Virtual Reality to solve a real-world problem. Our Real-World Problem: Most of us don’t think about where the food we eat actually comes from. Astounding Animal Adaptations at St. Lucie West K8

Fifth-grade students conducted a science experiment to determine the most effective adaptation of insulation for animals in the Arctic. They compared human skin, aluminum foil (fish scales), marbles (turtle shells), and Crisco (blubber) by placing a hand inside a bag filled with an insulator and then into buckets of icy cold water. After making observations through repeated trials, the students concluded that blubber was the most effective adaptation for warmth, with aluminum foil coming in second place!
