Northport K-8 middle grades Ensemble Choir participated recently in the 10th Anniversary of Disney Festival. Thirteen girls, accompanied by Northport K-8 staff and parents, represented Northport with aplomb. Students performed an arrangement of Michael Jackson’s hit “ABC” as well as “Hot Chocolate!” with show choir ability. The girls received an “Excellent” rating and were thrilled with the professionalism of larger groups from across the state. Northport Choir Director, James Kirk said, ” The girls were on point! Northport K-8 School is proud to offer to Northstar team 6, 7, and 8 grade students the opportunity to design, build and implement a STEaM Photonics Lab. The lab allows students to excel in many areas including science, math, engineering and technology that have not previously been explored. Students are utilizing the engineering design process and work in groups to develop a design plan using criteria and constraints, implementation and modification, as well as trouble shooting and executing their final design. Seventh grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in a state-wide essay contest sponsored by the Florida League of Cities and Florida League of Mayors. This was endorsed by both Mayor Faiella of Port St. Lucie and Mayor Hudson of Fort Pierce.  Palm Pointe is very  excited to announce that out of more than 1,500 state-wide entries, team Apollo’s Isaiah Thermilus’ essay earned a second place finish.  Each essay had to respond to the prompt “If I were elected mayor…” and Isaiah wrote about what he would do to make our city a better place. … Read More

Thanks to the Partnership in Education between Weatherbee Elementary and the United States Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce, Weatherbee’s first, third, and fifth graders were able to learn about water safety. Seaman Fawn Moro delivered an informative presentation, teaching the students how to stay safe in, on, and around the water. After the presentation, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary set up the ‘Let’s Talk Trash Game’ and the ‘Fishing Game’ for the students to learn the importance of keeping our waterways clean. All the Kindergarten students at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed a hands-on experience at the 4-H Farm. This field trip enhanced their classroom lessons on animals and learning about gardens as they were able to touch the fur of a donkey, pony, horse, calf, goat, sheep and even a pig. Jabari Monds, Jake Legentus, Anthony Sarver, and Lumarion Gardenhire wait in anticipation of getting to feel the hair of the donkey. They looked at the similarities and differences of the animals to compare and contrast and had fun learning about what our farm friends do for us!

On April 3 – 6, 2014 Saint Lucie West Centennial HOSA traveled to their State Leadership Conference at Coronado Springs Resort in Walt Disney World. Over the course of the four days, two students qualified to attend HOSA’s National Leadership Conference. Alexia Stewart placed in the recognition event for Outstanding HOSA Chapter competing against twelve other regions with hundreds of other HOSA chapters. The Law Day Art & Poster Contest was a great opportunity for students to show off their art skills and take home some cash. Northport K-8 fifth graders in Judy Fowler, Tracey Healy, Melanie Polascak, Carla Caldwell and Lisa Wiedrick’s classes hosted Mrs. Olga Drucker, a Holocaust survivor recently. Mrs. Drucker spoke to the students in the media center about her experiences living in Nazi Germany as a child and her experiences as part of a special group of children who were transported out of Germany into other countries called “Kindertransport!” Mrs. Drucker spoke to the children with a quivering voice of experience about real life history. Robert was recently named a 2014 Gates Millennium Scholar, a highly prestigious scholarship award funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation that covers Robert’s expenses for his undergraduate, master’s and graduate studies. Robert was among 1,000 students chosen from a pool of 52,000, making this years decision one of the most competitive in the programs history. Robert is Valedictorian of his high school class, and expects to graduate with both his AA degree from Indian River State College and IB Diploma from Lincoln Park. He is a multidimensional student with interests in music, service, and science.

Students at Centennial High School had the unique opportunity to hear about the  Holocaust from an unusual perspective as local author Peter Haase spoke on Friday, May 5. 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English students were privileged to attend a presentation by Mr. Haase, President of the Treasure Coast Writers’ Guild, who spoke  about growing up under the Nazi regime, being forced to join the Hitler Youth, and the devastation to Germany caused by Hitler’s years in power.

Students from Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in Administrator for the Day.  These students saved up their rocket fuel to be able to spend the day with the principal which they receive from the staff for their positive behavior and part of the PBS program.  Each student turned in 300 rocket fuel to be able to enjoy the day with the administrator.  They shadowed the principal all day and helped with the Honor Roll assemblies, lunch duty, work in the principal’s office and many other jobs throughout the day.  Pictured from left is; Laney Keys, Jayden … Read More

Northport K-8 School Big Brother, Big Sister Mentor Merisa Moroz has won a $1000 Scholarship for the University of North Florida from the Children’s Services Council. Merisa attends Mosaic Digital Academy and has served as a mentor this school year. Northport is thrilled to have a strong partnership with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the AmeriCorps tutoring branch of the organization as well as the many programs offered by the Children’s Services Council. The theme this year (for Elementary grades) was “Voting at the Polls”.   Mrs. Cary Schott was so proud of her art students. Each student worked hard to create a winning illustration. Jacqueline, a 5th grader at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts, designed  the first annual “Believe in Yourself” day. Students celebrated the positive qualities within themselves and others to motivate one another to be their best every day.

35 students from Imagine Schools Nau Campus are new members of the National Junior Honor Society. Cinco de Mayo is not going unnoticed here at Samuel Gaines Academy. Students in Mr. Plowden’s 8th grade History spent some time researching different Hispanic leaders who has made significant contributions to their culture by creating Thinking Maps, taking Cornell notes, and using technology resources.  This is a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage and is warmly embraced at Gaines Academy.

First grade students in Michelle Smith’s First Grade Class at Mariposa Elementary each have their individual goal folders. Inside their goal folders are sight words, math concepts (numbers, 3D shapes, etc.) and chunks (digraphs/blends/word families). The students pair up each week to practice their goals and congratulate one another when they reach their goals. Northport K-8 students, teachers and parents united recently to complete the Young Author’s program. The Author’s program is a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have learned the writing process effectively. The entire school completes the book as a community program using common language in a commitment to engaged learning. Students learn to flesh out their characters and setting with concrete vocabulary words and phrases. Students prewrite, reflect, edit, illustrate and then revise their books for publication and presentation.
