Northport K-8 School Media Center has developed and initiated a brand new program at the school that teaches and promotes leadership skills and training through a program called “Northport Leadership Summit.”. The Northport “Leadership Summit” will be held monthly and will showcase and spotlight community leaders. Alex Oge was one of the Parkway students who invited his grandfather to the annual Grandparents Day Celebration.  Over 100 grandparents came to lunch on September 17th.

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently celebrated their first Citizen of the Month awards. These students go above and beyond the expectations of the classroom and school. Northport K-8 School honors and supports all who are fighting the courageous battle against Sickle Cell Disease this month. Awareness as a school community is being raised by instructor, Marie Solide whose daughter Kookie died of Sickle Cell Anemia very recently. On October 8, Northport community will wear red clothing and donate to the cause by purchasing bracelets in honor of the many lives lost. The proceeds of the purchase of the bracelet will be presented to Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Anemia in the name of Northport K-8 School and Kookie. Mr. Kline’s technology class researched and tested aerodynamics.  First, the students did research of wing design, and which type of wing would lead to the best result (most distance).  Then, they shared thier research via powerpoint with the rest of the class.  Finally, they tested their research. Forest Grove Middle School faculty and staff participated in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake Event on Saturday, September 20th.  Thank you to all of the donations to a great cause.

Kindergartners in Melanie Francisco’s Class at F.K.Sweet Magnet School related to The Little Red Hen’s lesson about working together in order to enjoy the final product.   The students helped their teacher make cupcakes and then they were able to frost them and eat them as a reward for their efforts.  Anthony Crouse and Thomas Ham stopped working just long enough to smile for the camera.

Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently had a P.B.I.S (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) event. Students were able to turn in five rocket fuel tickets that they had earned for positive behavior and dress up as a twin for Twin Day. Students were very excited for this event and many students participated. Pictured is Dean Matthew Kovach and first grader Kyle May. This is Kyle’s second year dressing up as a twin with the dean. Way to go Kyle!

St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club hosted the US Army Jazz Ambassadors concert in Downtown Tradition. Port Saint Lucie High Schools JROTC cadets, Cadet Captain Ashlee Seipel, Cadet Captain Cole Herndon, Cadet Sergeant First Class Jamie Triplett and Cadet Captain Robert Hopkins, were very excited to present the colors and introduce the US Army’s Jazz Band. 7th grade student,Sultan Mahmud, was nominated by Leigh Bretherick.   He attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, DC over the summer for 1 week.185 middle school students participated.He heard speakers such as Al Gore, Mitt Romney, Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.), Newt Gingrich, Jesse Jackson, etc.Sultan learned that a leader has many different traits and that determines what leadership style they have.His favorite part was a sleep-over at the science museum and using the simulators.

Students at Fairlawn Elementary showed their appreciation for the Transportation Department following the PBIS Training and Breakfast. Fairlawn’s Bus Drivers, Bus Monitors and Larry Petruff from the Transportation Department were amongst our invited guest. Students from Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Neshkoff’s first grade classes honored them with a song tribute and students Olivia Titherington, Gracelyn Rouleau, Jacob Cason, and Isabel Paschal did the poster presentation. “Thanks for all that you do in taking us safely to and from school,” students noted. Fairlawn appreciates the Transportation Department!

The Kindergarten students in Mr. Zakrajsek’s class are shown working hard. They are using a Dr. Spencer Kagan strategy called Rally-Robin to orally communicate the rules and expectations to their friends. The students have also used this strategy to meet their new friends and describe themselves to one another. Throughout the year they will use this strategy to  communicate what they have learned throughout each lesson. The students are very excited to be able to discuss what they know with their friends. Northport K-8 kindergarten instructor, Tiffany Tredor, and her students have been putting the “sweet and sassy” into learning new vocabulary words this year much to the delight of the students and their very happy parents! Mrs. Tredor and her students read the book “Fancy Nancy” by Jane O’Connor and are now embracing “fancy words!” Kicking off the EOVocabulary unit, students very first new word is “glimmer,” so students dressed up in their very best clothes and even insisted that Mrs. Tredor dress up as a ballerina. Allapattah Flats hosted its first annual Goodies with Grandparents day on Tuesday, September 9th. The turnout was spectacular and the students were thrilled to spend some quality time with their grandparents.  Grandparents and students were walked through a comparison activity, they listened to a student do a read aloud and then created a little crafty gift for the grandparents to take home as a keepsake. Northport fifth grade instructor, Melanie Polascak and her students learned about the Survivor’s tree at Ground Zero. Students learned that the pear tree was crushed as the towers collapsed but, like the human spirit, it was repaired, nourished and has regenerated. The tree is now in a precious spot at Ground Zero. Mrs. Polascak’s class made a wonderful analogy about the rebirth of that small pear tree and the healing of the millions of people affected by 9/11. Northport K-8 School celebrated Grandparents Day recently with a grand flair and style! Hundreds of grandparents and extended family members celebrated their children and the community efforts of the school by visiting the cafeteria and courtyard and lunching, picnic style. Culinary Arts instructor, Rachel Ellsworth and her students prepared a wonderful salad bar and sweet treats for grandparents to enjoy. The camaraderie and joy was evident and the school was thrilled to host the magnificent opportunity to remember grandparents. September 9th the volunteers at Weatherbee Elementary were given a breakfast and orientation for new prospects.  Last year our volunteers donated over 7,000 hours of their time to our classrooms.  We look forward to seeing more of them in this coming school year and appreciate all they do for our children.  Featured here are Elizabeth Thomas, PTO President, and  Donna Pancoast.

Fairlawn Elementary School received a $1000.00 check from the National VFW.  The State Commander,  T. Wayne Makham, presented the check to Principal Jennifer Hedeen at a faculty meeting with Superintendent Genelle Yost, Dr. Kevin Perry, and Lydia Martin in attendance.   This donation to Fairlawn Elementary was a result of Shirley Helton (retired 5th grade teacher) receiving the national honor of VFW Teacher of the Year 2014.  Mrs. Helton graciously accepted this award recently in St. Louis, Missouri.  Mrs. Helton was nominated by Nell Moyers to the local chapter and then continued on to win at the state and national levels.    … Read More
