Northport VPK-8 School students from across the campus came together as a community to participate in the Annual Young Author’s program. Students, teachers and parents collaborated to bring the magic and joy of writing to Northport students. Students worked to think up great ideas from a variety of genre’s, write the story, edit, rewrite, illustrate, match the words to the pictures, develop plot, characters and setting and to bring conflict into the story line. Students in Mr. Lewis’s class were building  circuits.  They were given batteries, copper wire and a light bulb and had to figure out how to use the materials to make a connection. Also, students were experimenting using M&M’s with the question “would all of the colors merge or separate”?

On April 27th, Weatherbee’s VPK classes were able to go on one of three field trips to the Children’s Museum in Jensen Beach.  It was a wonderful experience for our students to be able to share and learn with other children.  They were able to dress up and look towards what future might await them.  We had some doctor’s, nurses, fire-fighters, mechanics and grocery store clerks, we also had artists, architects and many other community little helpers present.  We are a Kids at hope school so the trip only reinforced many of the conversations that we have daily with our … Read More

Students in Ms. Fuller’s VPK class enjoyed showing their family members what a day of learning is like in their classroom.  Families enjoyed center rotations with their VPK child.  Students and parents read books in the listening center, explored reading fundamentals via online programs, used manipulatives and many other engaging activities.  Thank you to our VPK families for attending our Family VPK Day!

Second and Third Grade students at Mariposa Elementary challenged their families and friends to chess this week! Students came to school dressed up as chess pieces, ready to teach their families how each piece moves. Families enjoyed some chess poems and a brief explanation of how to play. Then students challenged their peers and relatives to a game of chess! This family game night was made possible through a grant called “First Move,” which teaches students to play chess through online videos, computer games, and weekly chess practice. The Chapter Business Procedure team takes 1st place again in SkillsUSA Florida state competition. The same team placed 8th in the National competition in June 2014. The team will be unable to compete this June due to summer college orientation commitments. Congratulation to the following members of the Chapter Business Procedure team: Tchael Jeune, president; Precious Sneeze, treasurer; LaToya Montimer, secretary; Emily Phillips, and Deon Gamble.

Rivers Edge hosted over 150 parents/students/guardians at their Spring Pentathlon on Friday, April 24. Every student was invited to come out with an adult male figure in his/her life to compete in 5 events – Egg & Spoon Race, Potato Sack Race, Hippitty Hop Race, High/Low  Hurdles Race, Scooter Board Race – that required, teamwork, encouragement and a little skill. Awards were given to the top three teams in each category, but the ultimate prize was a shared memory that will surely be celebrated for years to come.

Student Council members at Savanna Ridge helped serve meals at Matthews Café of Grace Way Village on Sunday.  They provide a healthy hot meal, every Sunday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for those in need.  What a great way for our students to show the community they care by helping others.

On May 2nd, The St. Lucie West Centennial High School Chamber Singers were invited to sing the National Anthem at the opening of the St. Lucie West Mets game at Tradition Field.  Students who participate in the Chamber Singers must have completed at least one year of choral education and are selected by audition only.    The ensemble performs throughout the community for local events and charity organizations.  For more information on availability please contact Bridget Glass at bridget.glass@stlucieschools.org

This year the Westgate Adopt-A-Class program led the county in classroom donations. More than $2,450.00 was donated to various classrooms.  The teachers would like to thank our parent community for their generosity. Special thanks goes to teacher Dawn Mealing and SAC member Dana Stonelake for working so hard to spread the word about this wonderful program.

Second grade students at Savanna Ridge Elementary partnered with Publix to help make Mother’s Day special for their loved ones.  Publix brought cakes to Savanna Ridge and helped second graders decorate them as a Mother’s Day sweet treat.  Thank you to Tina and Christine from Publix for assisting our students.

Northport VPK-8 School media specialist, Lynne Gruszka, seventh grade instructor and brand new teacher, Kendal Jo Hamblin and Maryanne Warren, student support specialist from New Horizons who is stationed at the school, collaborated recently to present a program for seventh grade Stingray students. The program was a culmination of the school’s Leadership Summit programs for middle school students that have been ongoing all year. SLW Centennial’s Quiz Bowl Team took first place in the Quiz Bowl State Competition sponsored by Skills USA.  The team will advance to Nationals.  The student team members are: Yeltsin Jean-Pierre, Dallas Sidebottom, Jaeger Johnson, Aylah Poe, and Adrianna Lovalente.

Dante Nurse, a third grader at Savanna Ridge Elementary, was recognized as one of the top 500 Classworks All-Star students for their excellent usage and high scores in Reading and Math for Spring 2015.  We are so proud of our All-Star!

The Centennial Women’s Chorus attended State Competition on April 21, 2015 at the American Heritage School, in Plantation, Florida.  The ladies did an amazing job receiving one Superior rating and two Excellent ratings.  The Women’s Chorus has students ranging from the 10th grade through 12th grade who have been in Chorus for at least two years.  We are so proud of all of the Chorus’ achievements this year.

Alex Lemonade Stand Foundation Fundraiser Students at West Gate K-8 raised over $1000 dollars for the Alex Lemonade Stand Foundation. ALSF is a childhood cancer foundation which raises money for childhood cancer research and families. All donations were made in memory of our 3rd grade student Julian Fraga who passed away in February.
