Teachers gave up some of their summer break to take part in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) training. Teachers worked together to create STEM Design challenges that allow students to solve real-world problems. They designed lessons that will give students the opportunities to collaborate with peers, design a model and test the model for effectiveness. Superintendent E. Wayne Gent was sworn in as St. Lucie Public School’s new Superintendent of Schools on July 21, 2015, during the School Board meeting. The new superintendent values the support he has received from the community and appreciates this opportunity to serve. He will focus on teaching and learning as the core mission, leadership and talent development, safety with a culture and climate conducive to learning, and communication/customer service/community engagement.

Treasure Coast Titans marched into this summer’s Penny’s Band Camp with a strong student leadership team. The long-standing annual camp, held at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, was host to numerous bands seeking to hone leadership skills, refine fundamentals, and enhance specialized techniques. During the four-day camp experience, students studied with recognized music educators and professionals from the southeastern United States. They learned from Florida Bandmasters’ Association Adjudicators and collegiate band directors. Upcoming fifth grades had the opportunity to attend summer camp at F. K. Sweet. Students are learning and having fun all at the same time. Students explored force and motion using balloon race cars to demonstrate the forces surrounding us. Pictured, left to right, are Jacob Andreacchio and Larry Freeman.

White City Wildcats are roaring readers! They took on the Action 100 program with amazing ambition and the results show their success. Students read at least one hour every school day and 30 minutes on non school days. The program was completed with the fidelity of steps being recorded daily and ongoing conferencing throughout the year. Congratulations to all!  

On May 18, Mayor Gregory Oravec spent the morning enjoying breakfast and answering candid questions from Student Council Members. Mayor Oravec was gracious enough to spend much of the morning visiting with many of the students, and was presented with an honorary key to the school to commemorate his visit.

Ms. Serrano’s ESY PK-1 Hearing Impaired class participated in an interactive review of their camping vocabulary words. This activity required students to identify items they would need on a camping trip. Once identified, students located camping items that were strategically placed in the classroom and packed it in the class duffel bag.

The Fairlawn family said their final farewells to some of their Fairlawn family that will be retiring this year. Pictured below in the front row from left to right are the retirees, Madeline Bell, Carolyn Johnson, Jan Mayr, and Steve Marcorelle. Not pictured but also retiring is Dessie Rogers. In the back row are Pat Gascoigne the Assistant Principal and Jennifer Hedeen the Principal. Collectively the retirees have 157 years in St Lucie County Schools. Thank you for all your years of dedication and service.  You will be missed!

The PTO of Rivers Edge Elementary hosted an amazing Spring Fling for families on Friday, May 22! Hot dogs, chips, and drinks gave students and their families energy for the multitude of activities going on. From the basketball tournament to dancing to the free carnival games – families had a great night out!

Lawnwood Elementary 4th graders travel through history in the United States’ oldest city of St. Augustine. From cannon firings to pirate escapades to sipping eternal youth, students were able to discover their own answers to the frequently asked DBQ question “Why did Spain settle St.Augustine?”

When the 2014-2015 school year started Mrs. Wilke presented the students with a challenge. She challenged them to read 1,000,000 steps of reading practice for 100 Book Challenge. Mrs. Wilke told the students if they met the principal’s challenge she would do anything they wanted her to do. The students voted on several options such as sing karaoke, dress like a clown, and complete the Ice Bucket Challenge. On Thursday, May 28, Mrs Bruchal’s Drama class presented two showings of The Wizard of Oz.  The audiences were wowed by a cast of characters who sang and danced, winged monkeys that captured Dorothy and her crew, and Munchkin “extras” who haven’t even made it to middle school.

On Thursday, May 21, 2015 Southern Oaks Middle School Band presented their end of year “Flower Power” Concert.  Director of Bands, Joann Kinder, conducted her 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in compositions such as Dragons in the Mist by Randy Navarre, Overlords by Sean O’Loughlin and At the Hop, arranged by Michael Sweeney.

Both ladies celebrated their upcoming retirement with staff, teachers, family and other guests. Barbara (Mrs. I) has worked for 17 years in St. Lucie County working in our elementary schools with small groups of students to raise their confidence and achievement scores.  For the past 46 years, Peggy (Mrs. McBee) has taught high school students in Physical Education and has specialized in Gifted Curriculum throughout our county at the elementary level.  Best Wishes to you both! You will be missed!

Kindergarten students at F.K.Sweet are winding down the school year by taking advantage of every minute of instructional time left.  The students recognized common types of texts while comparing and contrasting versions of their favorite Fairy Tales.  Nancy Thomas from Mrs. Morgan Haupt’s class and Denzel Wright from Mrs. Melanie Francisco’s class were just two of most students who dressed up like their favorite Fairy Tale characters.  All of the kindergarten students are looking forward to “Happily Ever After” in first grade next year.

Each year the Florida School Nutrition Association honors school food service nutrition professionals with the Nutrition Award. The award recognizes the professionals that increase enthusiasm, desire, development, and implementation of nutrition education activities that reach every region, district, and school in Florida. This year, Cafeteria Manager Eileen Kielbasa and her staff claimed the Region 6 Nutrition Award for the state of Florida for the the third time. This honor was based on the Art in the Park/Farm to School and PTO event that took place in October. Students created beautiful art by painting with fruits and vegetables.
