Treasure Coast High School Students Encourage Second Graders to Recycle As part of their community service project for Skills U.S.A., Arielly Dias, Arthur Waddell, and Olivia Wallman visited several of the elementary schools in St. Lucie County including Palm Pointe, Bayshore, and Manatee in an attempt to emphasize the positive effects that recycling has on a community and its environment. On Thursday, February 11, Rivers Edge 3rd Graders were gifted their very own dictionary. Representatives from Rotary International brought one for every 3rd grader in the school. This supports their goal of increasing literacy in our country. Rivers Edge is grateful for our community helping our students receive the best education possible.

Northport K-8 School students have been working diligently this year with teachers, veterans, Gold Star Families and Mrs. Gruszka in the Media Center to educate each other, their families and the community about the Medal of Honor, Gold Star Families and World War II. The learning experiences included Gold Star mothers, Karen Zook and Linda Schuman interacting with kids from grades three through eight about service, sacrifice, integrity, commitment and then teaching others about these ideals. On February 3, 2016, six TCHS senior athletes committed to colleges.

Students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class had a blast playing “Teacher For a Minute” while practicing addition/subtraction.  Jadia Tate used counters to solve the problem on Lyla St. Hilaire’s card.   This was a great activity including movement and communication skills with classmates.

Pamela Garrity, Bayshore Elementary STEM teacher, recently entered the Kids at Hope Day Contest.  She was recognized with the Time Traveler Award for teaching students how to mentally travel to the future.  Her lessons taught students to realize how they can utilize their personal talents and the importance of the skills they are currently learning to reach their destinations in the future.   Pictured, from left to right: Pamela Garrity and fifth grade students Taryn Erdosi, Jessica Holsten, and Angelica Moreno.

Bayshore Elementary School hosted a Superhero Literacy Night as part of Celebrate Literacy Week.  Families started the night learning about their children’s upcoming curriculum.  Afterwards, they participated in fun literacy stations that included superhero reading, bingo for books, word building, and creating soaring reading goals!    Pictured, from left to right, are fifth grade student Vanessa Cruz, first grade student Jonathan Cruz, and Kilsy De Jesus.

On Friday, January 29, Weatherbee Elementary hosted its annual Episodic Reading Day. The event was a huge success and a perfect ending to the many activities planned for Literacy Week. The Women’s Volleyball and Basketball teams from Indian River State College shared stories with students and talked to them about the importance of sportsmanship and keeping good grades in order to participate in sports. Southport 8th grade students were engaged in a technology enhanced practice for their current unit, Systems of Equations. Students, together in groups, answered questions as a team, then when they came to a consensus for their answer, they took turns being the “runner.” The “runner” went to the answer zone in the hallway and found the correct QR code that matched the answer they chose. They scanned the QR code with their phones which, if they chose the right answer the QR code gave them the next question. The students really enjoyed the activity. The Westwood JROTC Air Rifle Varsity Team defeated four schools to retain the much-coveted McNair Silver Trophy cup at the 4th Annual McNair Memorial Rifle Match for the third year running. Alex Rediker led the varsity team as the match individual champion as well as earning three additional individual medals. Jennifer Arriola was the prone champion and the “Sniper” champion, boasting nine out of 30 perfect 10’s! Raul Velasco also took an individual medal in standing. Kindergarten students in Carmela Gauthier’s class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition celebrated their 100th day of school.  Students and staff dressed up for the celebration and had many activities throughout the day using 100. This was a fun way to learn, and the students enjoyed the learning experience.

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition’s National Junior Beta Club members brought in items to donate to the local animal shelter.  Our members are reaching out and finding opportunities to help our local community.  Thank you, Beta Club members!

On Thursday, January 21, 2016, students, parents, and staff at St. Lucie Elementary participated in Literacy Night. In addition to the many other events SLE hosts to promote and support family involvement, teachers and staff lovingly served dinner and provided a variety of skill-based literacy activities for parents and children to partake. Literacy Night is an innovative way to provide children and parents with various reading techniques. On Friday January 22, 2016, St. Lucie Elementary students who honored Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy during the parade were rewarded with an ice cream social.  The participating students received a little break from class to enjoy ice cream with a variety of toppings served up by SLE staff in gratitude of their time and efforts contributed as well as their community spirit.

White City celebrates integrity at this month’s citizen of the month ceremony. A student in each class was selected by the teacher for demonstrating the character trait of integrity. Integrity is showing good moral character, being honest, doing the right thing consistently and meeting challenges with a good attitude. Wildcats, we are so very proud of you!
