Northport 3rd graders recently enjoyed the IRSC Hallstrom Planetarium. This was a wonderful learning experience for a group of really awesome students, teachers and parent chaperones. ❤ ? ? ?

Northport Media Center and some of our sixth graders served as hosts to our community partner, Step Up America. John McIntosh spoke to our students about the three branches of Government and understanding the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He reviewed the 1st Amendment which is Freedom of Speech. John also spoke about the importance of service to your community and volunteering. He spoke about the importance of our military and first responders and taking care of each other. Northport community celebrated Sharks and Stingrays middle grades students for achievement and perfect attendance. We are so thrilled to welcome parents and families to help and encourage the students. Spectacular job to all students and teachers! Thank you all for helping us achieve one of our Northport School Improvement goals of increasing attendance rates.

Mr. Nunez’s 7th grade science class at Manatee Academy created a recipe they like to call “The Kohlrabi Salsa” using fresh ingredients from a garden right outside their classroom! The ingredients include kohlrabi, cilantro, yellow pear tomatoes, and green onion. Way to go!

On Friday, January 18, 2019, Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion’s Army JROTC Drill Team attended the Santaluces Community High School Army JROTC drill meet in Lantana, FL. Cadets competed in male and female squads and color guard. Mrs. Durkee and Mrs. Higgins’ Allied Health classes and HOSA-Future Health Professional members partnered up with Communities Connected for Kids for their annual Making Christmas Bright project. CCK oversees child-welfare services in Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast, and Guardians for New Futures, which helps meet the unfunded needs of children in foster care. The project has served thousands of children in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. On Friday January 11, 2019, the Culinary Department at St. Lucie West Centennial High School hosted StratherDuPree II, the Director of Articulation and Partnerships at Indian River State College, and Rachel Rosiak, an IRSC Recruitment Specialist. Mr. DuPree and Ms. Rosiak received an overview of the program from the teacher, Christina Gedke-Balaschak, and interacted with students as they prepared to make five different soups. 

Child Nutrition Services make homemade dill pickles and a healthy seven layer dip for students at CAST! YUM!

On Thursday, January 17, students in the Law Academy at SLW Centennial High School learned about K9 Patrols and how K9s are used in law enforcement. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office shared information on how the dogs are trained, handled, and used in law enforcement.

Allapattah Flats Gators honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in the MLK Parade on January 21, 2019!  

As part of their Flight and Space curriculum, 8th grade Northstars students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class designed a flight obstacle course. Throughout the day, other students had the opportunity to fly through the course and try for the fastest time.

Congratulations to Sam Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies!  Coach Crenshaw and the Lady Colts basketball team bounded into first place at the MLK Basketball Tournament!

The Fort Pierce Westwood’s Class of 2019 senior pinning ceremony was a tremendous success! Alumni Ian Osking inspired students with his keynote address.  Once a panther, always a panther! Congratulations seniors!

Northport community is so pleased to present our Northport Students of the Month for January 2019. Students are selected by their teachers for having good citizenship, being a good friend, being a positive role model or for just doing the right thing. We are so PROUD of our Northport health aide, Sonja Simmons. Sonja has been named SLPS Health Aide of the Month. Sonja always has a friendly and welcoming smile for everyone. She is kind and patient with the children and is a great team player. Sonja is a terrific asset to our Northport family and she is loved by everyone!

Sophomore Christen McCann broke the career three-point record made with number 151 in January.  Congratulations to Christian from her Coaches, teammates and LPA family!

A wonderful program was recently held in the Northport Media Center! The entire fourth grade came together with their teachers to learn about the autoimmune disease, Alopecia. Jeffery Woytovich, a representative from the “Children’s Alopecia Project,” came to raise awareness about alopecia. Students and teachers learned that there are three types of alopecia, or hair loss, Alopecia Areata, which is patchy hair loss, Alopecia Totalis which is majority or total loss of hair above the neck, and Alopecia Universalis which is total body hair loss.
