McKinney Vento in the Community

McKinney Vento Case Manager, Dieucica Times, took part in the Black Health Panel to show support for National Black HIV/AIDS Day. During the event, she shared valuable insights about the McKinney Vento program’s eligibility criteria and the assistance it provides to our SLPS families. With her wealth of experience and expertise in working with this demographic, Dieucica effortlessly blended her two backgrounds, adding an impactful and memorable element to the event.

SLPS Career Fair

The South County Career Fair was held on February 27th at the MIDFLorida Event Center.  Approximately 400 juniors and seniors from Mosaic Digital Academy, Port St. Lucie High, SLW Centennial, and Treasure Coast High were in attendance.  Students were able to meet and chat with company representatives, ask questions about their company and careers, interview, and possibly land internships.  The goal was to expose students to the companies and businesses in St. Lucie County, provide them with the opportunity to learn and explore specific industries, gain the confidence needed to approach adults and start conversations, interview, and practice soft skills.  The … Read More

St. Lucie County Early Childhood Conference

180 Early Childhood Educators engaged in a morning of learning, laughter, and comradery, hosted by the SLPS Early Childhood Department, ALPI-Head Start, The Early Learning Coalition, and the Children’s Services Council. Fabulous keynote sessions were delivered by: Chancellor Cari Miller and Mandy Rowland, FLDOE; Mabel Ramirez, Discount School Supply; and Tony Chaidez, Lakeshore Learning. 90% of a child’s brain is developed by the age of 5. We greatly appreciate the educators of our youngest students!

36th Annual St. Lucie County Regional STEM Fair and Award Ceremony

On February 16th, 2024, 180 students competed in the 36th annual St. Lucie County Regional STEM fair at Indian River State College. These grade 6-12 students represented 21 schools in St. Lucie County. The competition was split into two divisions, junior and senior, with 13 categories in each division. Students were interviewed by community judges from organizations such as IRSC, USDA, City of Port St. Lucie, UF/IFAS and many more. Chart Your Course: Maritime & Marine Career Expo

St. Lucie Public School students (middle and high school students) participated in the Chart Your Course: Maritime & Marine Career Expo.  This event was hosted by the Fort Pierce Yacht Club Foundation in partnership with the Career & Technical Education department (St. Lucie Public Schools).  This career expo provided opportunities for students to learn about various career pathways available to them in St. Lucie County.  Local Maritime and Marine business representatives provided information on skills and education needed for various career options, along with guided knowledge on obtaining career goals. Comcast’s “Internet Essentials” is geared to those who have at least one child that receives free school lunches through the National School Lunch Program. Other criteria include being located where Comcast offers Internet service. Fort Pierce Westwood Academy Going to States for State STEM Fair

On February 16, 2024, 16 students from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy participated in the 36th Annual STEM Regional Fair hosted by IRSC. The students demonstrated exceptional skills in presenting their projects and justifying their research to the judges. At the subsequent STEM Fair Award Ceremony held on February 21, 2024, eleven participants were chosen for one or more awards. One of the students, Alexander Delamarter, a 9th-grade student, was selected to proceed to the State STEM Fair and represent the school. Here are the winners and the awards they received:

Retired SLC Educators Embrace a Rich History

Dr. Kevin Perry and Chris Craft, SLC Tax Collector Former band student at Westwood High School mentored by Dr. Perry. The SLC Retired Educator’s Association met to celebrate African American History during their recent gathering. Dr. Kevin G. Perry, Assistant to the Superintendent, was the featured speaker. His message, “The Power of YOU, Living Legacies in Education,” resonated with the audience of retired educators and community leaders. This powerful message encouraged retired educators and community leaders to continue to leave a lasting legacy.
