Open House was a success! We had a great night welcoming our new and old students to Mariposa Elementary. Mr. Logue officially welcomed our new Kindergarten students and their families explaining that they are now officially Monarchs. After the orientation, the students were able to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. There were stations set up to help parents complete their registration, find their buses, complete lunch applications, and apply to volunteer. During the months of April and May, Mariposa students have been writing and publishing their own books as a part of the annual celebration of writers — Young Authors. Students from grades kindergarten to fifth wrote, illustrated, edited, and published original stories. These books were shared and celebrated through several classroom and school-wide activities. Four writers were chosen to represent Mariposa at the Young Authors Celebration. The Knights of Columbus Council #12159, from Holy Family Catholic Church, had fundraising events to raise money for Mariposa Elementary’s Grace Packs Program. The Grace Packs mission is to provide weekly food packages for students in need. The men hosted four fish bakes, welcoming many from the church and community to a delicious meal; their wives baked homemade desserts and accepted extra donations to raise $1,000 to support children who need food at Mariposa Elementary. Mariposa students and staff held a surprise “tunnel of support” for students taking the FSA test to show the students how proud we are of their hard work and to help motivate them to do their best. Younger students from each class made signs and posters encouraging their peers.  Students lined up on each side of the outside hallways with their signs. They cheered and held up their signs while the students walked through the tunnel.  This event meant a great deal to the students. Cris Martinez’s weather program from WPBF News Channel 25 visted Mariposa Elementary’s fifth graders. The students kicked off the weather program with a rap they wrote and choreographed about how hurricanes form. Next, Mr. Martinez discussed and interactively presented how tornadoes form and how they affect us in Florida. Rebecca Sampson was interviewed by Cris Martinez; she explained how much she enjoyed his interactive presentations. It was a great learning experience for our fifth graders!

Mariposa Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team led by Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni competed in the Palms Regional tournament in Riviera Beach, Florida.  They competed in Division 1 for problem number 5 titled “Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends.” They were one out of eight teams that decided to solve this problem. Mrs. Michelle Smith’s second grade students from Mariposa Elementary were privileged to visit the Hallstrom Planetarium at Indian River State College.  The children learned how to find cardinal directions in the sky to help them discover different constellations.  Students also took a trip through space, learning about how the planets closer to the sun are hotter than those further from the sun.  Did you know you could fit a million Earths in the sun? Hobe Sound Nature Center visited the fourth graders at Mariposa Elementary. The center brought an owl for students to study and look at the world of raptors, while examining closely the adaptions of owls. Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni’s students learned about these adaptations through a hands-on activity investigating owl pellets. During this exciting lab activity, the students learned about food chains, ecology, and natural history. The lab activity produced small skeleton parts from rodents, birds, and more. The fourth graders were very excited to be able to take home these discoveries!

Literacy Week was a success! Students participated in daily Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) time. Students got cozy with a good book! We also had first grade teddy bear picnics, a third grade vocabulary parade, fourth grade guest readers, as well as “Going Bananas for Reading” and book exchanges at Mariposa. At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Michelle Smith’s 2nd grade class teamed up with Mrs. Theresa Delancy’s 3rd grade class for writing!  Every 2nd grader has a 3rd grade pen pal who acts as a writing mentor.  After reading the story The Plump and Perky Turkey, students were asked to imagine that they were a turkey! Mrs. Kari McIntyre’s Kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed Apple Center Day! The children had a wonderful time using their 5 senses to explore apples. Mrs. McIntyre spent 3-weeks having the students learn about the 5-senses, specifically what, why, and how we use them. Through reading, writing, science, and math, the children were able to explore apples and create apple projects based on their findings. In the picture, Ayva Bonacchi is sharing her apple project with her grandmother, Dorothy Bonacchi. It was a fun day of learning!

Mrs. Wolff’s kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary is learning about the states of matter. Prince Boatswain and Olivia Thrasher were excited to see a cool transformation. The students measured, felt, smelled, observed and discussed the white grainy solid that was placed on their plates. They discussed how it could change shape. Then water was added to their teaspoon amount of grainy powder and “POOF” the powder transformed 100% in size forming snow. The students in Mrs. Kari McIntyre’s Kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary are having fun learning all about triangles! Michael Soto, Zykeria Reynolds, and Kaarina Wiley are demonstrating their skills by creating a human triangle. One of the many activities the students participated in was using a string to create a triangle in their classroom. Also, they were able to describe the triangle by its attributes; they recited that “A triangle has three sides and three vertices!”

Go Team, Go!!! There was a lot to cheer about during Mariposa’s PBIS Wear Your Favorite Sport Shirt or Jersey Day. It was a grand slam! For 10 Butterfly Bucks, students could wear their favorite sports team shirt or jersey to school. There was no fumbling with that as many excited students wore their shirts proudly. As a plus, teachers and staff could also wear their favorite sports team shirt or jersey to school. We saw many Mariposa students proud and excited to have taken part in this event. The 5th graders at Mariposa Elementary in Ms. Kathy Guntow’s class are investigating the proper use of scientific tools. The students rotate through stations that measure volume, mass, length, time, and temperature. They also explore how to use microscopes and hand lenses to complete their science measurement tools activity. Toni Serra, Dylan Baugh, and Crystal Headley are cooperatively working with a classroom scale.

Kindergarten students honored their grandparents at Mariposa Elementary. They enjoyed their time by reading and drawing together. The grandparents and their child completed a book together and shared stories. Afterwards, the children and their grandparents enjoyed lunch together. James Hiner with his Grandfather, from Mrs. Kari McIntyre’s class, enjoyed this special day. It was a beautiful morning shared!
