At Mariposa Elementary, several people donated rocks to encourage and inspire Ms. Erica Morales’ students to do well on their Math FSA. She hid the rocks around her classroom the day of the Math FSA. The students were surprised and went on a rock hunt. They had a blast!  The rocks were meant to inspire the students to do their best. After discussing mysterious movers all week, and learning that wind, water, and planets are mysterious movers; the students in Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s Mariposa VPK classroom learned about the solar system and how the planets are constantly moving. They learned the correct term to describe that movement — orbit. They then discussed which planets were closer to the sun, and they all held a planet, moon, or star and began to orbit. The use of technology, images, and songs were implemented as well. Students pictured: Brayden Myers, Arianna Jesse, Madilynn Bonocchi, and Shantel Perch.  

Mariposa first graders had an awesome ”in-school field trip!” They learned about the rainforest  and the many plants and animals that live there. The students even learned about all the foods and products they use at home that originate in the rainforest. If you’d ask our students their favorite part, their answers would vary.  Some would say they loved using the animal puppets, others enjoyed hearing the story of The Great Kapok Tree while adding their animal to the Velcro rainforest, but most students would say they loved touching the real rainforest snake. Mariposa Elementary’s Award Winning Odyssey of the Mind Team A team of seven creative minds from Mariposa Elementary came together to save creativity through problem solving. Mariposa’s Odyssey of the Mind team went to a regional competition in Riviera Beach, where they won 2nd place! The team members that participated were 5th graders Janellie Alvarez, Sydnee Rubenstein, James Philips, and Samantha Gardner; 4th graders Justin Horton and Mason Mumford; 3rd grader Taylor Wildes. Former student, Mark Jattan, comes back to Mariposa Elementary to shadow teachers. Mark is seen here with his former fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Sarah Letsch. Mark is interested in becoming a teacher and is currently attending the University of Central Florida.  He would like to begin his career teaching at the elementary school that started it all for him. He has a great deal of fond memories from Mariposa and would like to continue that tradition for the upcoming generation of Mariposians.

Mrs. Baptiste’s third grade student, Jayden Fairchild, put her amazing reading skills to work as she read a favorite classic story to Mrs. Auciello’s first graders! The class was silent and fully engaged as they listened to her read to them.  

Mariposa Elementary first graders Jackson Smith, Trinity Andrews, Delsin Geliga, Tyler Rubenstein, and Alejandro Delatorre worked as a team to utilize their problem solving skills to create an amazing “moving” model using gears! They were able to figure out how to get a ball from one end to the other without having to touch it! The gears did all the work!

Mariposa Elementary first grade students enjoyed a beautiful day at The Busch Wildlife Care Center in Jupiter, FL. Each class enjoyed a tour led by one of the talented educators on staff at the Care Center. The students learned about Florida animals and their environment. Most importantly, they learned the importance of preserving animal habitats and how to care for the animals. While on the tour, students saw an alligator and a crocodile, four species of owls, hawks, a bald eagle, a deer, raccoons, vultures, cranes, turkeys, and many more interesting animals. Michelle Smith and Jenifer Scipioni were recently recognized by PNC Bank for their dedication and service to the students at Mariposa. Mrs. Smith initiated involvement with Grace Packs a few years ago and has been instrumental in continued support of this outstanding program. Grace Packs is designed to help students who are in need of food support. Every Friday, food items are sent home with identified children to augment the food available to them at home. Mrs. Scipioni has taken on the weekly logistical responsibility of this program and has even elicited help from a local Girl Scout troop in … Read More

Mariposa Elementary celebrated its PBIS by having a Pokemon Day. Students paid 20 Butterfly Bucks to participate in Pokemon Day where they created a unique Pokemon with special powers and a Poke-Ball and then played charades as they became a Pokemon. Maurice Johnson and Tristan Coe are working hard to create their Pokemon. Jha’keriah Galloway, Brianna Granja, and Beverly Garay are discussing their Pokemon with each other. Fourth graders in Ms. Erica Morales’ class at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed playing the role of the math teacher. “Ms. Owens, and Mr. Orozco” guided their fellow classmates in multiplying two digit by two digit numbers using the Matrix Model. At Mariposa Elementary’s book fair, many students benefited from a special donation from two brothers, Antonio Delatorre and Alejandro Delatorre. The brothers each donated $10 along with a letter they individually wrote indicating that they would like the money to benefit students who cannot afford a book. It was a very special donation indeed and many students went home with books because of their generous donation! Also, the book fair hosted a “Books and Bubbly” event for teachers and staff. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Mariposa Elementary are celebrated at monthly PBIS Brag Bracelet ceremonies for adhering to the school I CAN expectations, Act Responsible, Be Respectful, Create Safety, and Doing Their Best. They each receive a bracelet stating their accomplishment as well as a delicious chocolate chip cookie and juice! Keegan Blaska, a 4th grader at Mariposa Elementary, has continuously gone above and beyond the school’s  I CAN expectations. A fourth grade student at Mariposa Elementray, Mateo Villegas, was celebrated for receiving a perfect score on his 3rd grade math FSA test. Mr. Logue and all of the administration and staff at Mariposa are extremely proud of his accomplishment!

Mrs. J. Scipioni’s 5th grade students at Mariposa Elementary have been working hard in math and science. They worked in inquiry groups to figure out how to separate base ten blocks to divide 2-digit divisors. Ashonni Crenshaw, Elivia Hughey, and Julia Caquias are working together as a team separating their base ten blocks. Students also worked in groups to figure out how to sort solid mixtures based on their physical properties of color, shape, magnetic attraction, and size. Mariposa Elementary students in Mrs. Michelle Smith’s 1st grade class took silly pictures with their new table team mates as a way to get to know each other! Students enjoyed the photo booth and laughed through all the pictures as they asked “getting to know you” questions to their new friends! Table team mates Lucia Costello, Zykeria Reynolds, Malaki McAdams, Kacen Maggard, and Michael Soto are enjoying getting to know one another in this picture.

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Linda Auciello’s 1st grade class was working on counting on and writing their numbers through 30. Student Tyler Rubenstein took this request to an ultimate level and counted all the way through the number 120. It took him five white boards to write them, but he was determined to show what he knew and refused to give up!

Pete the Cat! Oh my! Mariposa Elementary students kicked off their school year at Barnes and Noble with Pete the Cat. Pete stayed to listen to Mr. Logue read his very own books, Pete the Cat’s Got Class and Duncan the Story Dragon — a 2016-17 Sunshine State Young  Reader Award Junior nominated  book.  Pete loved both stories and helped the students decorate their cookies, build Lego buildings, and shop for books. At Mariposa Elementary, Butterfly Bucks are used when students are caught doing positive behaviors. When a teacher or administrator catches a student following one of the I CAN expectations, they hand them a butterfly buck and acknowledge the specific behavior the students were caught doing. The students then place them in their butterfly bank similar to the one pictured and save them to spend on special PBIS events or to buy a special item from the PBIS store.
