To celebrate Florida City Government Week, the City of Port St. Lucie hosted a Virtual Town Hall for Kids. Students at four local schools, Morningside Elementary, Southport Middle, Port St. Lucie High and Somerset College Preparatory Academy, submitted videos, asking questions about how their local city government functions. Their questions were geared to members of a five-member panel of City employees, including Mayor Gregory J. On Saturday, October 24th, current and former Forest Grove MOA Prep students participated in a critical field study to monitor the various aspects of the Indian River Lagoon. Due to the current pandemic, this study could not be done en mass as usual but instead in smaller sections on the weekend. These pictures highlight our Bulldogs (both former and current students as well as teachers) and their adventures throughout the day! Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and academic success were the focus of this virtual Night of Freshmen Learning (NFL) for all 9th grade Westwood Panthers and their families. Christina Coppola, a district SEL Specialist, psyched up the audience with a fun welcoming ritual to create a sense of community for the evening. Ms. Quinn’s K-5 ESE class is learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin. The students conducted an experiment to see what conditions would be the best for growing pumpkin seeds. They created three environments for testing: a plastic bag, a cup and a pumpkin. The students were excited to see the results of their experiments with sprouts growing.
Students, Teachers and Staff at Oak Hammock K-8 stands United as One during Bullying Prevention Month. Students demonstrated on campus they were Rising Above Bullying by working together in Grades 5-8 to create, throughout the school, “No Place for Hate” murals using feathers. Students, teachers and staff wore orange on Unity Day to show they were United as One. The 3rd Grade team displayed unity by reminding everyone, “You can sit with me #NOBULLYING”
On Saturday, October 17th the Treasure Coast HS AFJROTC participated in a huge ceremony honoring our veterans along with the Honor Flight organization. Cadets presented our nations colors to kick off the ceremony and then accomplished a flag folding ceremony for the veterans. Congressman Brian Mast made remarks to the veterans as well, and “challenge coins” were presented to all veterans in attendance. Veterans were thrilled with the ceremony honoring their service and appreciated the cadet’s efforts to recognize them.
Village Green students in PreK-fifth grade watched an energy efficiency program, Kilowatt Kitchen Livestream Special, by the National Theatre for Children. Students watched entertaining sketches featuring a variety of characters discussing electricity and energy conservation. This was followed by an interactive Q&A as well as an exciting shout out to our school!
St. Lucie West K-8 School’s Second graders in Mrs. Harvey’s class learned all about the Scientific Method through a super-engaging penny experiment! Students showed-off their results for Shark Nation. JAWESOME JOB, 2nd graders!
CAST fifth grade students in Ms. Broderick’s and Mrs. Wyatt’s classes built simple machine cars, powered using renewable energy, to demonstrate how energy can be transformed from one form to another. These students used Joule Jeep kits from our LEGO Makerspace to create vehicles powered by mechanical energy from their hand generators which was transformed into electrical energy to propel their Joule Jeeps forward.
First grade students in Mrs. McKenna’s class celebrated Hispanic Heritage month with research projects and some very special presentations. Students presented their findings through posters, books, powerpoints, artwork and performances.
Nicholas Demko has qualified as a Semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. As one of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who are Semifinalists, he has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
