The 5th graders at Mariposa Elementary in Ms. Kathy Guntow’s class are investigating the proper use of scientific tools. The students rotate through stations that measure volume, mass, length, time, and temperature. They also explore how to use microscopes and hand lenses to complete their science measurement tools activity. Toni Serra, Dylan Baugh, and Crystal Headley are cooperatively working with a classroom scale.
Gaines Academy will host a Doughnuts with Dad Day this Wednesday September 30th at 8am in the SGA Auditeria. Students will have doughnuts with Dad (or any honorary dad or male role model). Then, they will create a special project with Dad for a school-wide display. Come on out, Dads!
Ms. Brenda Hoskin from Southeastern Guide Dogs visited Frances K. Sweet third graders after they read Saving Buster, Aero & Officer Mike, and Good Dogs, Guide Dogs. Ms. Hoskins, the handler, brought her guide dog, Molly, and discussed how Molly was trained and what she is responsible for. The boys and girls were quite intrigued!
Fourth grade students at Frances K. Sweet explored the Law of Conservation of Mass by demonstrating that the mass of a whole object is always the same as the sum of the masses of its parts by finding the percentage of a banana that is edible. The Fort Pierce Westwood JROTC Panther Battalion Honor Guard provides a Saber Arch for the Homecoming Court on the 25th of September during halftime activities of the Westwood vs Treasure Coast football game. As dawn broke on the morning of Saturday, September 19, 2015, the Fort Pierce Central High JROTC Cobra Battalion held their annual beach cleanup at Pepper Park on North A1A in Fort Pierce. The Fort Pierce Central High JROTC Cobra Battalion is dedicated to helping maintain a clean environment and this event was just one in a series of Cobra Battalion events scheduled for this year that will help achieve that goal. The SGA Red & Gold Tie event was an amazing success. Gentlemen from around the county supported Sam Gaines Academy middle school students at the event. These community leaders provided practical tips to the young men on how to tie a tie and offered professional advice on being a successful person. Great relationships were formed and positive expectations were established.
Northport seventh grade students in Andrew Mackenzie’s class are diligently processing new information on the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Students are learning that there are twenty-seven amendments to the Constitution and are participating in deep discussions about each Amendment to select which two Amendments they think that they can live without. Students conducted research and identified evidence-based reasons to support their point of view on this topic. They are really looking at the Constitution and familiarizing themselves with important American issues. Gaines Academy is honored to announce our new Assistant Principal, Alex Oge. Mr. Oge is an exceptional Assistant Principal with eight years of experience at Port Saint Lucie High School. He has served in the capacities of Dean and Science Teacher at Treasure Coast High School and in New York. He is married and has two school-aged children. His wife, Guermithe Oge, is also an educator at Weatherbee Elementary. Staff hosted a breakfast and extended a warm welcome to Mr. Oge as he joined our Colt Family our September 21st.
The September COLT of the month was held on the afternoon of September 17th in the Gaines Academy audeteria. The program started with a welcome message from Principal Wilke. Then, the SGA guidance staff led both parents and students in a fun activity that explained the month’s character trait. After the activity, the giving of the certificates ceremony began. Audience members were thrilled to hear why their child had been chosen by their teacher to represent their class in the power-up trait of RESPONSIBILITY!
Over 600 parents and students attended Ft. Pierce Central’s College Night for Juniors and Seniors. Hosted by Central’s Guidance Dept. and Administration, families learned important information regarding the college application process, college admission data, and financial/scholarship opportunities. Websites that can assist in selecting and applying for colleges and scholarships were demonstrated. Students were also given a time line of what needs to be completed each month to stay on track and meet deadlines. Friday morning, September 18, following the Pledge of Allegiance and the Kids At Hope Pledge, Northport joined the Nation in remembering our POW/MIA military members and their families. Kindergarten students honored their grandparents at Mariposa Elementary. They enjoyed their time by reading and drawing together. The grandparents and their child completed a book together and shared stories. Afterwards, the children and their grandparents enjoyed lunch together. James Hiner with his Grandfather, from Mrs. Kari McIntyre’s class, enjoyed this special day. It was a beautiful morning shared!
