Nineteen educators from St. Lucie Public Schools recently attended the 58th Annual Florida Council for the Social Studies Conference in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Susan Taboada of Treasure Coast High School and Dr. Karen Garcia-Rinelli of Oak Hammock K-8 presented three sessions at the conference introducing a variety of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) applications that can be utilized in social studies classrooms. The fourth annual Giving Concert is planned for October 28th at Fort Pierce Central High School in the auditorium located at 4101 S. 25th Street in Fort Pierce. The doors will open to the general public at 6:30 p.m. and the concert boasting area choral groups will begin at 7:00 p.m. The event, sponsored by St. Lucie Public Schools and organized by choral director, Dr. Rolanda Jones, will benefit Grace Packs which is a weekly weekend backpack program that provides necessary food items to students in need. Go Team, Go!!! There was a lot to cheer about during Mariposa’s PBIS Wear Your Favorite Sport Shirt or Jersey Day. It was a grand slam! For 10 Butterfly Bucks, students could wear their favorite sports team shirt or jersey to school. There was no fumbling with that as many excited students wore their shirts proudly. Fort Pierce Central’s Cobra Battalion Raider team took home first place for both the Mixed Team Obstacle Course and Mixed Team overall during Fort Pierce Westwood’s Raider Competition. “The cadets showed some outstanding teamwork and intestinal fortitude,” said the team’s coach, retired Lieutenant Colonel Matt Saxton. The Cobras fielded two 10-cadet mixed teams (boys and girls) for the Westwood competition. “The mix of boys and girls is really good for everyone,” said Cadet Staff Sergeant Cassady Green. Students in Mrs. Logue’s fifth grade science class at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts investigated four different chemical reactions during a class lab. Students were able to describe the basic physical properties of matter, make careful observations, and identify common signals that a chemical reaction had occurred including a color change, an endothermic reaction, an exothermic reaction, and a gas release.
SLW Centennial’s Senior Class sponsored a beautification project by painting the Eagle Cafe.
The SLW Centennial Baseball Team devoted their time and gave back to the community by reading to first graders at St. Lucie West K-8.
Manatee Academy was fortunate to have the dynamic Patty Mayer from our local Red Cross speak to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes. Debbie Remington, Manatee’s media specialist organized the event. The Pillowcase Project is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3 – 5 which teaches students about personal and family preparedness, local hazards, and basic coping skills. Generally given as a 40-minute presentation by Red Cross volunteers, the program leads students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Raider team competed in Fort Pierce Westwood’s Raider Competition against 17 teams from 7 other schools. The competition consisted of six events: 3 mile team run, Cross Country Rescue, The Raider Fitness Challenge, 200lb tire flip over a 100-meter course, an obstacle course and the One-Rope Bridge event. Before the Cross Country Rescue, everyone takes a written first aid test, during the event the team simulates a casualty by carrying an 80-120lb stretcher over a mile long course while wearing three 30lb ruck sacks. Manatee Academy’s Pre-Vet class organized a fantastic school-wide collection program this year for “Save the Chimps,” a local animal sanctuary that cares for about 300 rescued chimpanzees. Students donated over 535 items to this local organization. The goal of the non-profit animal sanctuary is to provide endangered chimpanzees a private, comfortable existence in an environment which simulates a natural habitat as closely as possible. Every chimp costs $16,000 per year to support, and chimps live to an old age of 80 years on average.
