Student Appreciation Week at Centennial

From January 13th to 17th, SLW Centennial High School celebrated Student Appreciation Week. This week was dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the hard work and spirit of our students. Man Your Battle Stations! Fifth graders in Mrs. Portee’s class put their mathematical skills to the test. Students strategically placed their ships on the battlefield and took turns firing at their opponent’s fleet by naming their coordinates. Awesome strategies, Sharks!  

Storytelling is fun at Windmill Point Elementary

Windmill Point Elementary School was visited by storyteller Donna Washington who joined students recently for two special assemblies.  Mrs. Washington resides in North Carolina and travels to schools to tell her wonderful stories. Storybook character visits F. K. Sweet to promote reading

Clifford the Big Red Dog recently visited Frances K. Sweet Elementary School to promote the school’s fall book fair. Pictured is Clifford (Justin Adrian) with student Alex Neil with his purchase from the book fair. All profits from the book fair will be used to purchase new books for the Media Center.

Storybook Character Parade Held at Palm Pointe

Kindergarten students and teachers at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition participated in the annual Storybook Character Parade. Students chose a book that they had read and dressed up like that character. Parents were invited to come and watch the parade. The parade route went around the school as the excited students waved to everyone. This event was awesome! Storybook Character Day at St. Lucie West K8

Kindergarten and first grade Character Day at St. Lucie West K8 was fantastic! Students were encouraged to let their imaginations soar as they read a book of their choice, created an inspired book report, and dressed up as an unforgettable character from their book. It was a truly magical day for students and teachers!    

Stopping Hunger One Bowl at a Time

The morning of March 9th saw a beautiful sunrise on the shoreline of downtown Fort Pierce’s weekly Farmer’s Market. This Saturday morning was different and special, and would have a huge positive impact on our community! The 16th annual Empty Bowls Project took place at the scene-stopping Fort Pierce waterfront. This yearly collaboration between St. Lucie Public Schools and the Treasure Coast Food Bank raises funds equivalent to 96,000 meals to support community members, friends, and families facing food insecurity in our four-county area. Stop The Bleed Training

Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and SLPS partnered to provide training for employees in the nationally recognized program — Stop the Bleed. Participants were afforded an opportunity for hands-on experiences in how to perform life-saving measures in critical situations.

Stop The Bleed is a nationwide campaign to empower individuals to act quickly to save lives.  According the the Department of Homeland Security, it can take less than five minutes for someone to bleed out after an accident.  EMS and other forms of emergency rescue often take longer to arrive on the scene.  It is vital that everyone has the knowledge and the tools to stop bleeding before it is too late.  The Stop the Bleed Campaign is critical to saving lives in America. School Board Chair Dr. Donna Mills was at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center with SLPS educators and Executive Director of Exceptional Student Education and Student Services Bill Tomlinson taking a STOP THE BLEED Training. The training was all about saving a life by knowing how to stop bleeding of open wounds after an injury. First graders in Ms. Smith’s class learned about cause-and-effect relationships during a recent Stop & STEAM day at CAST. The students experimented with making volcanoes! Everyone loved the reactions when the elements were combined!

SNAP®, which stands for Stop Now And Plan, is an evidence-based cognitive behavioral model that provides a framework for teaching children struggling with behavior issues, and their parents, effective emotional regulation, self-control and problem-solving skills. The primary goal of SNAP is to help children to stop and think before they act, and keep them in school and out of trouble. Stop and Stem Day at Lakewood Park

Students in VPK-5th grade at Lakewood Park participated in their first Stop and Stem Early Release Day this month! Students researched, designed, built, and tested various prototypes.  Our Falcon engineers were hard at work and enjoyed showing off their unique talents and skills!

Stop and STEAM Event has 4th Graders at CAST Excited About Local Florida Attractions

  During Stop and STEAM week, Ms. Denman’s fourth grade class studied the effects of tourism on the Florida Economy. Students were tasked with creating their very own travel brochures as they learned about the types of attractions that help Florida’s Economy. From the East Coast Railroad founded by Henry Flagler, to the latest Club Med Resort, students created brochures on a number of wonderful and unique Florida destinations.  Students illustrated their brochures, created event and show schedules, and even brought in samples from their attraction.  

Steve Weagle Visits Northport K-8 for the “Wearing of the Green!”

Oh what a lucky day it was at Northport K-8 School! The Chief Meteorologist for WPTV, Channel 5, Steve Weagle visited to not only give students an engaging lesson on weather forecasting, but he also participated in the Wearing of the Green in the media center. Northport first and second graders listened intently about the use of radar to find rain and learned about how rain buckets are used to measure the amount of precipitation.
