SLPS teachers participated in STEMinar at FGMS on Saturday, June 7, 2014.  Conference sessions were devoted to all grade levels with a focus on Gearing Up with Interactive Notebooks!  Participants acquired best practices for advancing STEM instruction.

STEM Takes Over in a Rivers Edge 5th Grade Class

Earning the highest scores in the county on the 5th Grade Science portion of the FCAT last year is not slowing down Rivers Edge from striving to continue their long tradition in the study of science. Recently, one of Rivers Edge Elementary’s 5th grade classes explored how sound energy can be transferred to different objects.

The future is bright! Students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM classes created laser security systems today as part of their Laser and Photonics unit. Students are learning about reflection, refraction and the use of lasers in fiberoptic cable as well as their application in multiple career fields.

The F.K. Sweet and Lincoln Park Academy chapters are excited to announce the STEM & Buds regional fair is fast approaching! Ranging from candy math to the effect of different wind strengths on trees, elementary and middle school students will present projects they have created this school year. STEAM Sharks Breeze to the Finish Line with Balloon Cars

Students in Mrs. Boham’s STEAM class at SLWK8 designed balloon cars to learn about Newton’s laws of motion, potential and kinetic energy, energy transfer, and alternative fuels. Thanks to our outstanding science teachers, our Sharks already knew all about Newton’s Laws of Motion or Inertia. They saw the car kept rolling after the balloon deflated because objects in motion stay in motion. The cars came to a stop because of drag, friction, or gravity. STEAM Rap Battle high school and middle school winners received special recognition at the January School Board Meeting for their championship performances at the 4th Annual Rap Battle. Fort Pierce Central High School and Allapattah Flats K-8 hold titles as this year’s top performers.

STEAM Night at CAST

At CAST on December 6, students and families had so much fun at our first STEAM night! Everyone enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and created their very own art bot. All the families did a great job problem-solving and improving their design when creating their robots. This was a great night of arts-integrated learning!

STEAM Lessons Underway at Westwood

Students in Mr. Wilk’s English Class presented on this quarter’s STEAM topic: Invasive Species. Groups researched various invasive species such as moths, ferns, and armadillos and how these species affected our area, our economy, and the environment. Students got creative with their presentations using dramatic performances and technology.

Static electricity demonstrated by Palm Pointe fifth graders

Fifth grade twins Rachel and Carly Bentel at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition use balloons to demonstrate static electricity in a recent science experiment for their science club.  The club is sponsored by fifth grade teacher Michelle Powers. Students met once a week in the morning before school and did fun and educational experiments.

States of Matter in Kindergarten at Mariposa Elementary

Mrs. Wolff’s kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary is learning about the states of matter. Prince Boatswain and Olivia Thrasher were excited to see a cool transformation. The students measured, felt, smelled, observed and discussed the white grainy solid that was placed on their plates. They discussed how it could change shape. Then water was added to their teaspoon amount of grainy powder and “POOF” the powder transformed 100% in size forming snow. STATES HERE WE COME!!!

The Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion attended the Area 3 Regional State Qualifying Raider meet at Camp Tanah Keeta, hosted by Jupiter High School, on October 29th, for the right to represent Area 3 at the State Raider meet. The Raider competition consisted of 5 events: a 1.7-mile run, 1-mile litter carry, gas can carry, tire flip, as well as constructing and crossing a rope bridge. The Jaguar Battalion Males and Females captured 1st place overall and qualified for the State Raider meet on November 13th, in Lake Wales, Florida.

Students who won medals at the recent Florida SkillsUSA 2012 State Championship were recognized at the May 22, 2012, St. Lucie County School Board meeting.
