Students buddy up for science at St. Lucie West K8

Students in Melissa Dixon’s seventh grade science classes at St. Lucie West K8 School regularly buddy up with students in Sarah Rivas’s fifth grade classes to discuss science and conduct scientific investigations. Students benefit from summer internship program

While many might have enjoyed a summer “get-away” at the end of the 2013 school year, Cindy Hill, Fran Casner, and colleagues in the school district’s Facilities Department planned real-world, first job experiences for Career and Technical Education (CTE) summer interns. As in past years, the 2013 Summer Internship Program proved to be a great experience for 17 St Lucie Public Schools students. Students at Windmill Point hold mock presidential election

After weeks of research and debate about the candidates, the students in Pam Bryant’s fourth grade class at Windmill Point Elementary School voted for President. Students enjoyed learning about the voting process, the terminology, and the significance of elections in our country. With this experience happening only every four years, it was an excellent teachable moment about history. The students really enjoyed learning about the voting process and all that it entails and are looking forward to the day that they will get to cast their votes.

Students at Savanna Ridge Learn the Importance of Water Safety

 Students in grades Pre-K-5 at Savanna Ridge Elementary participated in a learning and enjoyable presentation on Water Safety. Presenters Bill and Jamie Wagner along with their special assistant “Bobber the Water Safety Dog from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shared with the students the importance of these skills through cartoon videos, lecturing and interactive Q & A. Students at Palm Pointe dress as heroes to support Heart Association

Students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition dressed up as their heroes for a donation of $1.00 for the American Heart Association.  This is an organization the school helps each year.  This was one of several events planned to help this worthwhile cause.  Pictured are students in first and second grade.

Students at Oak Hammock K8 Learn About Fire Safety for Community Helper Day

Firefighters Daniel Torres and Sam Saxton had a presentation with Kindergarten and First Grade Students to talk about the many jobs of a firefighter and how kids can practice fire safety. They showed students what firefighters wear, the tools they use, and the different types of trucks they operate. They also went over fire safety and how students can practice being safety smart at home such as creating a fire exit plan with families. Students were excited to receive their little red fireman hats during the presentation.  

Students at Oak Hammock K8 Enjoy a PBiS Celebration

Students at Oak Hammock K8 School participated in an after school PBiS event. To participate in this activity, students had to have earned 10 Osprey dollars and have no referrals for an allotted period. Students enjoyed dancing, a tattoo station, arts and crafts, pizza, and cupcakes. A good time was had by all who participated.

Students at MSE Celebrate Second Annual Macy’s Day Parade

Mrs. Moore’s and Mrs. Eibl’s second and third grade classes got together to research and then recreate the Macy’s Day Parade. Students enjoyed writing the script, searching for pictures that represent their favorite parts of the holiday tradition and then starring in and editing their creation.  Video Presentation  

Students at five St. Lucie schools have 100% passing rates on Geometry test

Fort Pierce, FL — Students in five St. Lucie County public schools had 100% passing rates on the End-of-Course Geometry exam, according to results released today by the Florida Department of Education. These included Southern Oaks and Forest Grove middle schools, Allapattah Flats and Westgate K-8 schools, and Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts. Out of 2,409 St. Lucie students participating in the 2013 Geometry End-of Course exam, 45% scored at the level designated as proficient or passing, according to results released today by the Florida Department of Education. Students at CAST Observed National Stop Bullying Day

Students at CAST observed National Stop Bullying Day by wearing blue for the day, and by having Ms. Skinner, our School Mental Health Counselor, visit various classrooms throughout the morning. CAST Middle Students participated in an engaging activity to remind them of the importance of choosing our words carefully and how to treat others with Kindness.  Students even signed a “Kindness takes Courage” Banner as a commitment to continue thinking of others and be kind to others even when no one is watching.  The lesson was a great reminder to students as they started their week.  A special Thank you … Read More

Students at Allapattah Flats K8 wrap up the first nine weeks of reading

Fourth grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 in Bethany DiTullio’s class completed reading projects for the first nine weeks. The students were given many different options to showcase their creativity and comprehension of their chosen book. Pictured are Alexis Allen with her Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Dolphin Tale’s true story events and the book’s events and Mark Wible with his cereal box book report on Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  

Students and staff enjoy PBS dance at F.K. Sweet

Teachers and students alike enjoyed the Positive Behavior Support dance recently at Frances K. Sweet Elementary.  Students from kindergarten to fifth grade came together for this after school dance. Students and families benefit from real world math at grocery math night

Lakewood Park Elementary students and parents had the opportunity to explore the world of math in real-world situations by attending a family math night at a local grocery store. The students had a taste of reality while walking around the store working out math problems and figuring which food deals were the best economically. After students completed the activity, they received a free homework pass. Parents and guests listened to some holiday music while shopping presented by Angela Moretti’s Lakewood Park Elementary chorus, and parents also had an opportunity to do their grocery shopping and the store manager gave away door prizes. Lakewood Park … Read More

Although Josiah Fullwood is a first-time kindergartner who is scheduled to attend Frances K. Sweet, he has already made a huge impression on teachers at Village Green Environmental Studies School during the opening professional development day. As 100 Book Challenge trainer Meighan Radigan models how teachers should level an incoming kindergarten child for his appropriate reading level, teachers and administrators were both stunned and thrilled that Josiah continued to ascend the reading levels to match first grade reading fluency and comprehension! Student Work Skills Opportunity Continues to “Perk” Interest

“Student Perks: It’s More Than Coffee.”  This slogan, used to promote a student-run enterprise known as Student Perks, rings true for those who instituted a work skills opportunity that began percolating three years ago in the St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program.   On Tuesday, October 16, Student Perks was recognized by the St. Lucie County Commission via a proclamation for Disability Employment Awareness Month, and they were also commended on the national award they received for this project — the National Association of Counties (NACO) Achievement Award in the Children and Youth Category.  The award lauds … Read More
