At Southport Middle School, students celebrated their PM2 growth with yummy treats!  Students were rewarded for making growth in one subject (reading or math) with chips and Takis.  However, students who made growth in both subjects (reading and math) were rewarded with chips/Takis as well as a Nacho Bar.  The Nacho Bar consisted of chips, meat, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and jalapenos.   Students enjoyed creating their own nachos. Before winter break, Fort Pierce Central freshmen leadership techniques students benefited from in-person visits to sample CTE program offerings. CTE or Career Technical Education courses offer real-world training for students to graduate high school with needed job readiness skills, training, and certificates to enter the working world. Students, families, teachers, and staff of Lawnwood Elementary School enjoyed a night of learning at Big Apple Pizza in Fort Pierce. Children were greeted with several book options to choose from. Participants not only engage in healthy physical activity while developing confidence and learning life skills, but they also learn about the strength of teamwork and helping others. A Pep Rally was held at Oak Hammock to inspire enthusiasm in students as they prepare to take the PM2 assessment.  Students enjoyed a fun filled day as they listened attentively to the sounds of music from Centennial High School Jazz Band. Mrs. Boham’s STEAM students designed and built bridges to test the efficiency of failure points. SKWK8 STEAM Sharks brought the bridge down this week! Sharks explored careers in construction and civil engineering to design and build bridges from balsa wood as a concept for a future bridge over the Indian River Lagoon.  They spent time analyzing the environmental and structural requirements needed for location, climate, and population. After learning bridge terminology, they applied the terms to design a bridge that would hold up under compression and tension forces. Village Green Environmental Studies School hosted their annual “Pancakes With Santa” event this past Saturday, it was a festive and fun way to bring together students, families, and the community during the holiday season. Families enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast with their loved ones. Santa and his elves were busy visiting with the children and creating lasting memories! There were Christmas-themed activities and crafts and plenty of photo opportunities for families to enjoy. Dr. Jacqueline Venzen,  Dr. Thomas Gay, and their fifth-grade students celebrated recent learning gains by engaging in a large-scale interactive math activity. Fairlawn second-grade students in Mrs. Chowdhury’s class discovered the world of fractions.  The students sorted fractions based on whether they were partitioned equally and worked cooperatively to solve problems.  By the end of the lesson, students were able to identify academic vocabularies such as denominator, numerator, partitioned equal, halves, thirds, and fourths.  Our second-grade students are now confidently able to sort and identify fractions up to fourths and apply what they have learned in real-world situations, they may have even benefited from an equally partitioned giant Hershey chocolate bar to wrap up the lesson.
