ST. LUCIE COUNTY – In a recent awards ceremony, students, parents, teachers, and community members from across the county gathered to celebrate the winners in the various categories of this year’s Science and Engineering STEM Fair competition. Students were judged on their challenging scientific questions, their research practices, and their problem solving procedures. From this elite group, 14 students were selected to compete this March in Lakeland at the State level competition, and three students will take their projects to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) this coming May in Phoenix, Arizona. The Grand Parade is the capstone event of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commemorative Celebration. Once again this year, all of our schools participated in the parade. At the April 22, 2014 School Board Meeting, representatives from the Commemorative Celebration Committee presented trophies to the winning schools. Hafsa Saeed meets President Obama while attending the Broadcom Masters Science and Engineering competition in Washington DC last month. A true testament of our Greyhound spirit, pride and excellence. She certainly represented us well!!! Hafsa received a medal, $1000 for her school (LPA), $500 for herself, and she got a mini planet and an asteroid named after her and for her sponsored teacher. Parkway Elementary School principal Ucola Barrett-Baxter and Fort Pierce Central High School assistant principal Susan Seal were recognized at the September 11, 2012, St. Lucie County School Board meeting for earning district designations for their respective administrative roles. Ms. Barrett-Baxter was named the 2012 Outstanding Principal and Ms. Seal Outstanding Assistant Principal for their exemplary contributions to our students, school and community. Oak Hammock K-8 School was recognized at the May 27th School Board Meeting as a 2012-2013 PBIS Model School. They were presented the Bronze Award by Mr. Robert O’Neill, PBIS District Coordinator. Some of the characteristics of a PBIS Model school are their consistent methods of utilizing data to better serve students and staff, utilizing creative and engaging reward systems, teaching PBIS to new students, extending PBIS throughout the campus and partnering with the community and parents, and including PBIS into daily activities across all available teaching opportunities. Students in Mrs. McKenna’s class put their research and writing skills to the test. Their research began by brainstorming different animals that can be found in the ocean. Each student was able to choose the ocean animal that sparked their interest most. They spent many days gathering research on their animal through books, websites and videos. After many rough drafts, the final drafts were written and illustrations were drawn. The outcome – THEY ARE PUBLISHED AUTHORS!!!
The students at Southport Middle School are being challenged to participate in 17 Acts of Kindness in remembrance of the 17 lives lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting. Ms. Morgan Kellogg, Southport Teacher of the Year and Student Council Advisor, explained on the morning news show that if 800 Southport students were to complete just one act of kindness for each life lost, that would be 800 acts of kindness to remember each of the individuals from Marjory Stoneman Douglas. On April 10th to April 12th St. Lucie County Academic Team competed in the State Academic competition held at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. St. Lucie County’s team came in second place, just seven points shy of first. The team scored the highest of any team in one of the rounds of competition with 391 points. The students that represented St. Lucie County were Geoffrey Zeheng from Lincoln Park Academy, William Barr and Nicole Molner from Treasure Coast High, Jeremy Johnson and Lauren Herb from Westwood High and Stephanie Fisher from St. Lucie West Centennial high.
Dozens of Lincoln Park Academy students, both alumni and current students, were part of the more than 100 runners and volunteers who came out to support and run in the 12th Annual Run for the Coach 5K, which took place Jan. 20, 2018 beginning at the RiverWalk Center in Fort Pierce. The 3.1 mile course, through downtown Fort Pierce area and across the South Beach Bridge, is run every year, in memory of former Lincoln Park Academy teacher and coach Wayne Cross, who passed away in 2006, and in honor of teachers and coaches everywhere. Mariposa Elementary Kindergarteners celebrated the 100th Day of School with lots of students dressing as if they were 100 years old. They also enjoyed a breakfast of French toast and pancakes showing 100. Students shared their colorful projects reflecting 100 items. The students really enjoyed celebrating the 100th day!
Kindergartens at Village Green Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school this week! We had the cutest little 100-year-old students engaging in fun activities throughout the day. They practiced counting to 100 with fun and interactive math games. They also wrote about what they would do if they were 100 years old. They read 100 sight words and did 100 exercises throughout the day. They’re 100 days smarter and we are so proud of their growth!
On April 22, 2014, the 100th Anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service Resolution was read by Kathryn Hensley and adopted by the School Board. May 8, 2014 marked the centennial of the signing of the Smith-Lever Act which established Cooperative Extension, known in the state of Florida as UF/IFAS Extension and Florida A and M University Extension, the nationwide transformational education system operating through land-grant universities in partnership with federal, state and local government.
