St. Lucie Public Schools’ Office of Teaching and Learning devoted June to College Visit Month.  We took 34 rising seniors to the University of Central Florida, 30 rising seniors to Florida Atlantic University, 43 rising seniors to the University of Florida, and 22 rising seniors to Florida International University. The students were able to listen to the Admissions Department from each university, discuss admission steps/requirements as well as learn unique facts about each institution. Students in grades 5-8 have been participating in a City Spies Book Club.  James Ponti released a new series of books in the Spy/Mystery Genre called City Spies.  Palm Pointe students are meeting weekly to enjoy reading this exciting book and solving Cypher Mystery Puzzles.  Each student has a secret spy name that they are using while competing to be the top Alpha Spy.  It is a joy to see students reading for pleasure.  Mrs. Fazzalaro, the Media Specialist and Club Sponsor, says it is the highlight of her week.

  The City of Port St. Lucie is helping to facilitate the best possible virtual school experience by providing 2,000 free mobile hot spots to families struggling to access the internet because of financial impediments. With six months of unlimited internet service, the City’s Neighborhood Services Department has 600 free Netgear Nighthawk MR1100 Mobile Hotspots available to Port St. Lucie students who are currently enrolled in a virtual school program as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. White City celebrates integrity at this month’s citizen of the month ceremony. A student in each class was selected by the teacher for demonstrating the character trait of integrity. Integrity is showing good moral character, being honest, doing the right thing consistently and meeting challenges with a good attitude. Wildcats, we are so very proud of you!

Fifth grader Brandon Roth from Mariposa Elementary School received the St. Lucie County Fire Department Citizen Hero Award for his courageous actions during a life-threatening situation on June 25th, 2018. On this day, ten-year-old Roth was riding his skateboard when he discovered a neighbor in distress lying in her doorway. He ran to her aid and flagged down a passing car to call 911. He continued to wait with her until the rescue trucks and firefighters arrived. His quick thinking and immediate action averted a potentially tragic outcome.

St. Lucie County Circuit Court Judge Dan Vaughn recently visited Southern Oaks Middle School. Seventh grade students have been learning about the three branches of government in their civics classes this year. Judge Vaughn spoke with the students about what it means to him to be a judge, and the education needed to become one. The students were eager to ask Judge Vaughn questions about the judicial branch of the government and how it works. Students in Mr. Plowden’s 8th grade History spent some time researching different Hispanic leaders who has made significant contributions to their culture by creating Thinking Maps, taking Cornell notes, and using technology resources.  This is a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage and is warmly embraced at Gaines Academy.
