Classrooms2Careers: Careers in Law, Public Defenders Office

High school students from St. Lucie Public Schools interested in becoming lawyers or pursuing careers in the legal field were recently invited to participate in a career information session and tour with the Public Defender’s Office. This opportunity was made possible through the support of SLPS Career Coaches, who work to connect students with real-world career exploration experiences.

Assistant Public Defender (Felony Division Head) Stephen Hooper hosted the visit and led a comprehensive session on pathways into the legal profession. He discussed what it takes to become a lawyer, shared his personal journey to becoming a licensed attorney, and highlighted the importance of career exploration, networking, and time management. Students also learned about internship and volunteer opportunities available through the Public Defender’s Office.

A highlight of the experience was a private session with Judge Robert Meadows of the 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Judge Meadows offered insight into his own path and shared thoughtful recommendations for students considering a future in law.

During the tour, students met with additional attorneys, learned about their career paths, and discovered the benefits of working with the Public Defender’s Office under the leadership of Diamond Litty. The visit offered meaningful networking opportunities and a behind-the-scenes view of the legal system in action.

A special thank you to Assistant Public Defender Stephen Hooper for organizing and hosting this impactful learning experience for St. Lucie Public Schools students.
