Northport K-8 fifth grade students in Carla Caldwell’s class demonstrated critical information learned through intensive studies of Native American tribes from different geographic regions of North America. Students compared and contrasted the different interactions each had with their geographic region and how this affected their lifestyle and their dwellings. Students identified cliff dwellers and Pueblo people of the Desert Southwest, coastal tribes of the Pacific Northwest, nomadic nations of the Great Plains and Eastern Woodlands tribes found east of the Mississippi River. At Frances K. Sweet Elementary, media specialist Genie DuPell is sharing a variety of books by author Mo Willems with the kindergarten classes. Eleven students representing the Southport Middle School Chorus joined their voices with other middle school singers from around the Treasure Coast to participate in 4-County Middle School Honor Choir at Indian River State College. Fifth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition used a variety of resources to compare and contrast two Native American cultures from different regions of America. Students in Donald Logue’s fifth grade class have investigated chemical changes. They performed investigations using chemicals in test tubes to observe color changes, a release of thermal energy, and an absorption of thermal energy.  They discussed their observations and wrote down evidence from each investigation on their lab record sheet.  Pictured are Ni’Derria Cobb, left, and Bradyn Moxley.

Palm Pointe first graders are Super Scientists! Students from Glenna Sigmon’s first grade class generated and tested hypotheses and used their super science skills to observe matter. Fort Pierce’s Manatee Observation Center’s Super Science Day presentations gave these first grade scientists the opportunity to make lava lamps and flubber. Students watched the matter change before their eyes.  Students were excited to record data and reflect in their journals. Pictured are Matthew Antonakos, left, and Zachary Veldhuis.

Lawnwood Elementary School teacher Denise Ferrara-Slater is breaking reading records with her after school tutoring program. Northport K-8 middle grades students are diligently planning, organizing and researching for the Northport K-8 School Annual Science Fair. Students in grades six through eight follow a timeline, beginning with getting special certification forms completed, checking and completing logbooks that include purpose, hypothesis, procedures, analysis, conclusion and much more. Students also are collecting data, completing research papers and formatting bibliographies. Finally, completed science research projects including science boards are due in December. Students in Andrea Logue’s fifth grade class at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts combined science and engineering as they learned how and why scientists identify a control. In this STEM lesson they generated hypotheses and tested them by filtering pond water through filters they designed and built in teams. Following three trials with their filter, the students analyzed and compared results with other teams of scientists. Eighth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition looked at different changes in matter both physical and chemical to observe and classify different changes in matter. Students produced their own lava lamp or graduated cylinder to view the physical changes of a mixture and the chemical changes present in a chemical reaction. Treasure Coast High School instructor Leinitia Robinson and students in the school’s Criminal Justice Academy participated in the inaugural Hometown Lunch Fest and Port St. Lucie Police Department Open House.  While there, students received tours of the police department and were informed by detectives, crime scene investigators, the Chief of Police and other key personnel about careers in law enforcement. Treasure Coast High School instructor Jack Clark chaperoned 28 students from the school’s Manufacturing/Pre-Engineering program to visit area manufacturing companies in accordance with the state’s Manufacturing Day. The first visit was to PAC Seating Systems in Palm City, where students received a tour from CEO Chuck Tufano. PAC Seating designs and creates state of the art airline seating for corporate and private jets. The visit was a huge eye-opener for students as they were very impressed with the quality working environment at PAC, which reinforced the OSHA safety standards students are learning in the classroom.  Students also visited Phoenix Metal in Ft. On the morning of October 11, some 147 students and their families from Manatee Academy K8 School participated in the third annual International Walk to School Day sponsored and promoted regionally by the South Florida Commuter Services by walking from nearby McChesney park to the school. School staff promoted the activity through morning announcements, PE classes, posters put up at the school, flyers provided were sent home and a message went home to all parents.
