Palm Pointe Oratorical Contest Winners

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest that was a district event.  The theme this year was “Dream Forward: Choose Peace, Equality, and Change.  Students wrote their essays about this theme and recited their speeches before a panel of judges.  The school would like to congratulate eighth grade student Sarah Wouters for winning first place, sixth grader Kiahra Wood for placing third, and fourth grader Alexia Morgan for placing third.  Pictured from left is Sarah Wouters, Kiahra Wood and Alexia Morgan.  Great job Rockets!

White City Kindergarteners Discover Turtles

  Kindergarten students at White City Elementary dove deep to extend their learning of sea turtles. Students in Mr. Capozzoli’s science resource classes discussed traits of a sea turtle, measured length of a turtle model, and examined models for damage caused by humans. Our kindergarten students are “surfing to excellence.”

Lincoln Park Academy Steps Up for Hope’s Closet through Shoe Drive

The National Honor Society and students of Lincoln Park Academy collected gently used shoes for Hope’s Closet during the month of December to help men, women, and children to better enjoy the holiday season.  The students will be continuing their service drive with Hope’s Closet in the month of January by collecting jackets and blankets.

St. Lucie Elementary VPK Students Celebrate Their First Harvest

Through the creation of a class garden, Ms. White, Mrs. Hines, and the classroom volunteer Mrs. Snyder, led their VPK students through a multi-sensory learning experience with outcomes that connected both school and home environments. By utilizing the senses of touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing as well as drawing on background knowledge, the students were fully engaged in all steps of the planting and growing process. As a result, all of the students reaped an abundant harvest of green beans that they were able to take home and share with their families.

Poetry Slam Auditions at FPW

Friday, January 8, 2016, FPW hosted its first Poetry Slam. This slam was an audition for the Louder Than A Bomb Poetry Slam Competition that will be held in April 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The judges selected 10 students to compete. They will meet once a week after school to learn how to write and perform their poetry.

SLW Centennial Medical Academy Students Participate in Mock Disaster Drill

Ms. Higgin’s and Mrs. Durkee’s Saint Lucie West Centennial Medical Academy students participated in a mock disaster drill at Tradition Medical Center and Martin Emergency at St. Lucie West. They were requested to participate as victims —  all 24 went to Tradition Medical Center first to be “moulaged” by specialized makeup volunteers. Twelve of the students stayed at Tradition Medical Center in the Emergency Room, the other 12 were transported to Martin Emergency at St. Lucie West. Every student was given a script to memorize. F. K. Sweet’s Challenge Program Awarded a Grant

Mrs. Stacey Johnson was awarded a $100.00 classroom grant from the Retired Florida Education Association.  Mrs. Barbara Kaste presented the award which will be  used to  purchase rocket engines for building model rockets from recycled materials with students in the Challenge Program. F. K. Sweet Received Grant To Improve Their Garden

Mrs. Barbara Bennett’s third grade class at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School received a grant from Retired Classroom Teachers  Association of Florida to enhance her class’ vegetable garden. These funds will provide her students with the materials needed to further educate them concerning plants and animals.

Graduation Rates Continue to Climb in SLPS

Graduation rates continue to climb in St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) with a reported 75.5 percent rate for the 2014-2015 academic year. According to the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), SLPS realized a 2.3 percent increase from last year’s rate of 73.2 percent and an increase over the last six years of more than 10 percent.

Centennial Senior Accepted by Cornell

Prince Edouard, Vice-President of the National Honor Society at SLWCHS, has been accepted by Cornell University in New York. Cornell, a prestigious Ivy League university, has an excellent program in chemistry and chemical biology, which Prince has chosen for his major. He plans to attend both medical and graduate school ultimately leading to a position as a research scientist with a pharmaceutical company.

SLW Centennial Medical Academy Students Learn Hands-Only CPR

More than 120 Health Science 1, 10th and 11th grade students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School learned Hands-Only CPR this week. These students were taught by Mary Higgins’ First Responder students. First Responder classes are available to students who have completed the Allied Health Program as a senior elective. First Responder students prepare for careers in emergency medicine by becoming CPR certified as Health Care Professionals, completing web based classroom instruction and skills in advanced first aid techniques, followed by a shadowing opportunity at various St. Lucie County Fire stations. Northport Students Evaluate Scientific Data Using Science Detective Skills

Northport is pleased to present our 2015-2016 middle grades Science Fair in the school media center. The Science Fair, under the direction of Dr. Laura Woodworth and a cadre of science instructors, are offering students an opportunity to stimulate out of the box problem solving. Students are encouraged and guided through the use of STEaM processes.
