Today on the Wilderness Club’s final hike, we discovered that an Eagle Scout finished our outdoor classroom down by Otter Pond and it is ready for teachers to come out with their classes and use. In our final 14 days as students are getting antsy and need a change of scenery, this is a perfect venue for a science lesson, a springboard into writing, a class reward/read aloud, a place to do some personal journal reflection about their school year or summer plans.
Albert Morgan is a rising junior in the Allied Health program at SLWCHS. He is an excellent student, always attending school, on time for class, and always well-prepared. He is an active member of HOSA-Future Health Professionals. Albert is a member of the Boys & Girls Club, belonging to the Chuck Hill Unit. ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Next stop – Los Angeles. That’s where Manatee Academy’s Project Citizen portfolio is advancing. The team of seventh grade students from Ms. Megan Shaver’s Civics class placed first in the state for their portfolio entitled, “Keep Port St. Lucie Afloat,” and the team placed second in the oral competition. Representatives from Manatee’s team presented their problem, possible solutions, action plan, and portfolio which included the team’s research binder and presentation board to a panel of prestigious judges on May 20 in Palm Beach Gardens. The Florida Department of Education released the Grade 3 ELA Scores, and the percent of Grade 3 students in St. Lucie Public Schools scoring satisfactory rose by two percent this year exceeding the State of Florida’s one percent gain. Seventeen schools had a higher percentage of students with satisfactory scores over last year’s results, and some schools made significant gains. Floresta Elementary realized an 11 percent gain, and two schools (Allapattah Flats and Oak Hammock) saw an eight percent gain. Mayor Hudson Presents Dan McCarty Middle School with Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities Civics Grant. Seventh grade Civics students from Dan McCarty Middle School (DMMS) visited Fort Pierce City Hall on Wednesday, May 18, to learn more about municipal government. Mayor Linda Hudson presented the school with a grant of $500.00 from the Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities (TCRLC).
French teachers Madame Elie and Mr. Johnson paired with culinary teacher Chef Strell to allow Fort Pierce Central French students the opportunity to create their own profiteroles (French cream puffs). Students learned to make a pâte a choux (pastry puffs), crême Chantilly ( Chantilly cream), and a hot chocolate sauce. The students worked in teams of three to create the batter and cream, and received pastries to fill, and customize on their own. The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speakers at Dan McCarty Middle School this month were Representative Larry Lee, Mr. Jerome Rhyant, Reverend Kenny Mills, and Mr. Lafayette Ashley. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students had the opportunity to hear the authentic testimonials of their guest speakers. Three separate sessions were held to accommodate each grade group and each session began with a musical presentation from Dr. Rolanda Jones and her students playing their African Drums.
Mrs. Logue’s fifth grade students at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts got to take a closer look at the food chain earlier this week as they dissected owl pellets to discover what prey the owl had consumed. Students had a great time and even got to take the bones they found home with them when they finished!
VPK Wildcats in Ms. Buescher’s class have worked hard all year! Students have learned letters, sounds, beginning reading strategies, numbers, addition and subtraction, science, social skills and more! We are so proud to move you up to Kindergarten next year! Congratulations to the VPK class of 2016!
Manatee Academy students in Ms. Shaver’s 1st period Civics class won first place in the state finals of the Project Citizen for their portfolio. Additionally, they won 2nd place for the oral competition which was scored on their presentation and question responses. Representatives from Ms. Shaver’s class participated in the state finals of Project Citizen on May 20th. Students presented their project to a panel of two different sets of judges comprised of Nova faculty, the League of Women Voters, and Florida Law Related Association staff. Mr. Kurt Wallach, a Holocaust survivor, visited Fort Pierce Westwood High School for a presentation for the junior class. He told his personal story and shared accounts and artifacts of his time in Nazi Germany. Mr. Wallach followed with taking questions from our student body. This was a somber, eye opening, once in a lifetime experience for our school and we are grateful for this opportunity. A sincere thank you goes out to one of our history teacher, Ms. Tara Clark, for organizing this for our students and faculty.
On Wednesday, May 18, a group of graduating seniors from St. Lucie West Centennial High School walked through the halls of Manatee Academy for the first ever high school clap out. Each year our 8th grade students participate in a clap out on their way to their middle school graduation ceremonies but this was the first time with high school seniors. It was special for the seniors as some of them had once attended Manatee and had the opportunity to come back one last time to see the teachers and staff who helped them get to this point.
