National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony

6th through 8th grade students at Oak Hammock K8 School participated in an induction ceremony for the National Junior Honor Society. The purpose of this organization is to promote leadership and build character among middle school students. Students are also provided with an opportunity to grow academically as they prepare for upper-level classes in high school. National History Day Competition Projects Judged February 20th

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – Over two hundred finalists will present their projects to judges on Tuesday, February 20th in hopes of besting the pool of entries and having the chance to move on to the state-level competition. Peaches are a delicious summer treat. A native of China, peaches traveled to Persia before making their way to the Americas with the Spaniards in the 1700’s. Thomas Jefferson grew peaches at Monticello. It wasn’t until the 1900’s that commercial peach growing began in the United States. National Custodial Workers Day 2018 is Tuesday, October 2, 2018 in the USA. National Custodial Workers Day is sometimes referred to as National Custodial Workers Recognition Day or National Custodian Appreciation Day,  but they do all aim for the same thing — thank our custodial workers for what they do every day. We appreciate the duties and responsibilities fulfilled by our custodial teams. The results of their work, namely clean and safe environments, are important and indeed recognizable. Thank you!

National Bullying Prevention Month and Proclamation

October is recognized as National Bullying Prevention Month.  The statistics associated with bullying are staggering across the United States.  More than one out of every five students reports being bullied at some point in their educational career. Natalia Chekhovskaya Talks About Girls in Engineering

Natalia Chekhovskaya of Indian River State College’s LASER-TEC, Photonics, and Optics lab, visited Treasure Coast High School’s Engineering Club to talk about girls in engineering, and in return, she heard about the Club’s solar GoKart project. This partnership is a great collaboration working on classroom projects and Club activities.

NASA visits Gaines Academy

On Friday, October 23rd, NASA Engineer George “Gabe” Gabrielle, came to Samuel Gaines Academy to speak with our students about space travel.  He taught Mr. Davino’s AVID classes about the NASA facilities, preparing them for their upcoming 8th grade field trip to Kennedy Space Center in November.  Mr. Gabrielle also had a chance to speak with the students in SGA’s 21st Century Program. Both groups enjoyed the presentation and had many questions for him about the wonders of space travel.

Nardi Routten – Appointed to National Assessment Governing Board

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Five leaders from around the country have been appointed to the National Assessment Governing Board to serve four-year terms, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced today. This year’s Governing Board appointees include four new members and one re-appointed member—the Board’s current Vice Chair Tonya Matthews. The appointees’ terms begin on Oct. 1, 2018, and end on Sept. 30, 2022. Mystery reader visits eighth graders at Palm Pointe

Lisa Weil and Karol Carvelli’s reading class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition was visited by mystery reader Adam Jones, a Port St. Lucie businessman.  Mr. Jones, a long- time resident in the area and British national shared his knowledge of English pounds and read from the novel, “Around the World in 80 Days.” Students ate British scones while listening to Jones’ interpretation of Phileas Fogg.  Pictured, left, is Mr. Jones with students from the class and Karol Carvelli, back right.

Lakewood Park Elementary MySchool fourth-graders enjoyed a PBIS event using Microsoft OneNote and TEAMS. Ms. Beaumier keeps track of student and class behavior using  Falcon Bank. MySchool 2nd Grade Class at Oak Hammock K-8 Used Project Based Learning to Commemorate 9/11

Mrs. Aristide’s Second Grade MySchool students at Oak Hammock K-8, enhanced their understanding of Citizenship and Government through Project Based Learning (PBL) by honoring 9/11. Mrs. Aristide, encouraged the students to explore: What is the significance of American Symbols? Students researched, selected and gathered data about their American Symbol. This PBL assignment challenged students to ask, collect, visualize, and create independently. “My Life in Symbols”: Fort Pierce Central High School Drawing Students Honor Keith Haring’s Legacy

  Inspired by Keith Haring’s style and influence, Drawing 2 students at Fort Pierce Central completed murals and t-shirts with their own symbols representing their life. Keith Haring commented on themes that were relevant to New York City’s fluidity in the 1960’s, such as teen drug use, greed, and building a community. My Favorite Character, Pumpkin Style, at Oak Hammock K-8

Students in Ms. Pelchat’s InD homeroom class at Oak Hammock K-8, decided to enhance their book report project by creating a pumpkin character book report. Each student used a pumpkin to recreate their favorite character from a book they read in class. Students identified the character, character traits and designed a pumpkin to be reflective of their character. Students were given the opportunity to present their project and share what they learned about the character to their peers.

Musicians Honored

Music in our Schools Month was founded 1n 1973 by the National Association for Music Education.
