On Sunday, February 6th from 1:00-3:00 pm, the 3rd Annual Kim Pearson Memorial Beach Clean-up at Pepper Park Beach took place. This is was to honor beloved Ft. Pierce Central High School Marine Biology Teacher Kimberly Pearson. As a marine science teacher, Ms. Pearson loved the ocean and was concerned about the human toll on ocean sustainability. This beach clean-up represents her passion in life, serving students and caretaking for the ocean. Pierce Central High School students in Mrs. Blackmon’s A.P. and Digital Art classes entered artwork in several categories in the prestigious Scholastic Art Award’s competition in December and the winners were announced February 28. FPC students entered artwork in the categories of Digital Art, Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Photography, Jewelry, and Sculpture. Teams from five SLPS High Schools competed on Friday, January 28th in this year’s Commissioner’s Academic Challenge. The team from Treasure Coast High School earned the most points in the 2nd round academic challenge and were declared the winners! Questions covered a wide range of topics including Mathematics, Science, Literature, Music and Foreign Language. Autumn Tagmeyer, SLW Centennial High School student, placed second in the Regional HOSA Competition for Medical Law and Ethics. She is qualified to compete at the state competition in Orlando in April. Congratulations Autumn!!!

Ms. Denman’s fourth-grade students at CAST put the “E” in STEAM! They used engineering to build a cofferdam. Students are learning about Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway. They are learning about the Key West Extension, an overseas railroad and how it was built.  

Weatherbee students enjoyed a Slushy and Snowball Social with their peers for having positive behavior in January. They had a blast tossing as many snowballs as they could before time was up.

In the media center, students were learning to use text features included in biographies to gain knowledge about famous Americans. Way to go Leopards!

Mrs. Albers’ sixth-grade classes explored force and motion using zSpace technology in our CAST Science Lab. They observed how friction, mass, and the amount of force affected the distance a block would travel. zSpace technology encourages and inspires students to interact with the curriculum and to experiment through augmented and virtual reality!  

  A cool, late January morning was a milestone moment in the journey for seniors at Fort Pierce Central High School. This year, a pinning parade accommodated seniors and their supportive families. This rich, annual tradition featured all the flare, celebration, and festivities that this momentous rite of passage deserves. Congrats to our seniors! FPC is a proud family.  

During our recent early release day, Mariposa Elementary participated in a schoolwide STEM Tower Challenge. Students enjoyed the hands-on activities while using their STEM skills. Mariposa K-2 students were challenged to build a tower with cups and index cards tall enough for them to help save Rapunzel, who needed help because the evil stepmother had cut her hair so she couldn’t escape. Mr. Softee went to Weatherbee for Early Release Day to provide a treat to the wonderful teachers and staff. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon learning and preparing for students.

Weatherbee Mariners were so excited to have guest readers in to read aloud during Literacy Week. Visitors left bookmarks for students to color and use when reading their own favorite books.

Middle school students in Mr. Cruz’s Visual Arts class experimented with hydro dipping. They sprayed paint into water then dipped paper to create a marble effect. The final products are ‘marble-lous’! 

The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Black Talon Company participated in Florida State’s Area 7 Academic Brain Brawl Championships on Saturday, January 29th, 2022. The Brain Brawl Championships pitted 32 NJROTC Academic Teams in a bracket competition where the top four teams competed in the finals. Each team is comprised of 5 cadets, 4 main players, and an alternate that can swap in when needed. SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC had two teams receive invitations to compete in the Championships. Oak Hammock K-8 7th grade students in Mr. Sparacio’s Civics class understand the importance of taking care of their community. The students learned how to monitor and influence local public policies by participating in the Project Citizen project. The project provides a practical first-hand approach to learning about the complex system of government and how to monitor and influence change. Students collaborated to address the concern of losing the local habitat of native animals in the surrounding community.
