ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Seventh grade problem solvers from across the District will converge on the Kight Center at IRSC on Friday, January 20 to compete for top marks on their ideas influencing change in public policy as they present their Project Citizen proposals. This year’s Project Citizen Showcase took place at IRSC’s Kight Center.  Teams of 7th graders from across the District came together to discuss their civic-minded projects with judges and vie for an opportunity to move on to the state-level competition. Project Citizen Awardees

The 7th grade students at Manatee Academy are advancing on to the Project Citizen State competition after earning 1st place for their project, “Center of Attention”.  The students conducted thorough research and interviewed both professionals and city officials alike to establish an action plan that would encourage the production of more venues and family-oriented events at the Civic Center and throughout St. Lucie County. Recently, the students presented the plan before City Council with high hopes of their support. Best wishes to Mr. Young and his students as they move on to states!

Project Citizen at Oak Hammock K-8

Oak Hammock K-8 7th grade students in Mr. Sparacio’s Civics class understand the importance of taking care of their community. The students learned how to monitor and influence local public policies by participating in the Project Citizen project. The project provides a practical first-hand approach to learning about the complex system of government and how to monitor and influence change. Professional Educators and Continuing Education

St. Lucie Public Schools obtained a Math/Science Partnership (MSP) grant focused on increasing science content knowledge. This grant provided twenty-five teachers with the opportunity to participate in the U-Futures program. Nine of these teachers continued, and through the grant along with the generosity of the University of Florida, they completed their Master of Arts in Education (MAE) in Science Education free of charge. This cadre of professional educators worked diligently to complete the rigorous coursework required for this degree. Superintendent E. Problem Solving Sharks

SLWK8 eighth-grade students in Mrs. Boham’s STEM class explored creative problem-solving by using limited resources to create a paper pallet to hold the most books. They could only use 3 sheets of paper and 10 cm of tape to complete the project. The students were able to support 39 books equaling 156 pounds. Way to problem-solve, Sharks!

Principals Selected for Prestigious Academy

Three St. Lucie principals were selected to participate in the Florida Department of Education’s Commissioner’s Leadership Academy conducted by the Council for Educational Change.  The Academy is made up of 25 of the highest performing principals in the state of Florida.   The intent is to build upon the skills of proven leaders so that they can serve as role models and coaches for others. Principal’s Panther Praise PBIS Event

Fort Pierce Westwood began a new, school-wide PBIS event with their students this year.  The Principal’s Panther Praise 200 Club (100 Club for MOA campus) requires randomly chosen teachers and staff to identify students who meet our ROARS expectations in and out of class each day.  Ten tickets are given out each day to be distributed to students for R-respect, O-on task, A-accountable, R-responsibility, S-safety. Principals from St. Lucie County Public Schools annually donate toys for the holidays for the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County clubhouses. The annual campaign was initiated by retired longtime principal Charles Cuomo many years ago.
