Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful and the City of Port St. Lucie in partnership with several City departments (Communications Department, Neighborhood Services Department, the Port St. Lucie Police Department, and the Utilities Department), Waste Pro, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and St. Lucie Public Schools kicked off the Buddy Bench project! Three local schools are participating in this initial phase: Morningside Elementary, Oak Hammock and West Gate K-8 Elementary. Reality Store SM 2016 – Designed to help students get a better understanding of what it takes to survive in “real life.” The students start the day with a set income (correlated to students’ GPA’s) and family members. Students visit various stations throughout the activity. They take responsibility of being head of the household. Real-Life Learning with Fictitious Court Case

At Centennial High School, one of the self-contained classes for students with intellectual disabilities is taking an innovative approach to learning. The class, led by their dedicated teacher, is preparing students to engage in real-life experiences that mirror the everyday lives of citizens. Recognizing that her students grasp concepts more effectively through kinesthetic learning and hands-on experiences, the teacher has designed a fictitious court case that is both relevant and educational. Ready to Work

Twenty students from SLPS attended the “Ready to Work” Manufacturing Boot Camp Program Acceptance Information Session.  Based on recommendations by high school guidance counselors, students attended to learn more about this opportunity to participate in a one week manufacturing boot camp organized by the Economic Development Council (EDC) post-graduation. Students will have an experienced-packed week visiting local manufacturers and attending training sessions that will include: soft skills, finances, and resume writing. Frances K Sweet celebrated Literacy Week by inviting dads in to read to classes.  The students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class enjoyed being read to by Reverend Ham.  His son, Thomas, was beyond thrilled  to have his dad read one of his favorite books to his class. 

Reading Under the Stars

More than one hundred families from Floresta Elementary participated in the Reading Under the Stars Literacy Night, where they acquired valuable literacy skills and strategies that can easily be implemented at home to cultivate a passion for reading.

Reading to Self one of most effective reading habits

Students have a wide choice of books to select from when using one of the five reading habits, Reading to Self. It is proven that a student will elect to read more, if they have an opportunity to make their own choices. Preston Zinter, in Traci Lott’s second grade class at F.K. Reading Reimagined! At Manatee Academy K-8

Manatee Academy K-8 in partnership with New World’s Reading and Children’s Home Society of Florida hosted the first of four Family Fun Nights “Reading Reimagined!” on Thursday, January 30th. Parents and caregivers actively participated in an engaging workshop that explored the value of diverse reading formats to better understand the importance of embracing all types of reading resources. K-5 Lawnwood students enjoyed a literacy event. Students and staff enjoyed reading their favorite book while basking in the sunshine. It was a lovely day for outdoor reading.  

Reading mentorships an investment at Northport K8

Reading mentorships are flourishing at Northport K-8 School. Students are excited to meet in small, informal groups with interested, concerned and effective instructors using a multi-pronged approach. Students have been meeting with mentors to read in the media center, on the patio, in the cafeteria and in the hallways to discuss books that interest the student groups. Reading mentors include media specialist Lynne Gruszka, reading coach Deb Mock, math coach Josie Bailey, and the newest reading mentor, Northport dean Agnes Brooks. Students are learning about the mentor programs through the morning announcements, through classroom teachers and by word of mouth. … Read More

Reading is Fun for Oak Hammock K-8 Students

Students in 7th and 8th grade at Oak Hammock K-8 were surprised to receive to 3-5 books from Scholastic Books. Ms. Gallick, their support facilitator teacher, raised funds with the help of friends and family to buy the students their own books. After weeks of waiting due to supply issues (and thousands of times asking Ms. Gallick, when will the books be arriving), the students were so excited to finally receive their books in time for Thanksgiving break.
