The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Black Talon Company participated in Florida State’s Area 7 Academic Brain Brawl Championships on Saturday, January 29th, 2022. The Brain Brawl Championships pitted 32 NJROTC Academic Teams in a bracket competition where the top four teams competed in the finals. Each team is comprised of 5 cadets, 4 main players, and an alternate that can swap in when needed. SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC had two teams receive invitations to compete in the Championships. SLW Centennial Navy JROTC Competes in Florida Marksmanship State Championships

On Saturday, December 10th, 2022, The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC traveled to Oviedo High School to compete against 28 other teams in the Area 7 (Florida) State Marksmanship Championships hosted by the Oviedo High School Navy JROTC. Centennial’s “Alpha” Team consisted of Aidan Rossell, Payton Mangine, Justin Lotak, and Jade Sikorski.  The Alpha Team finished in 12th place out of 28 teams from all over the state of Florida.  Cadet Rossell was their top shooter and earned a top team shooter medal. Every month the SLW Centennial High School’s NJROTC “Black Talon” Navy Eagles Company performs “Adopt-A-Street” and “Campus Clean-up” operations on a one-and-a-half-mile section of Cashmere Boulevard as well as the SLW Centennial High School Campus. This tradition has been in place for over 16 years and has contributed to thousands of pounds a trash being removed from the streets and campus around SLW Centennial High School and it’s neighborhood. SLW Centennial Navy JROTC Cleans the Streets!

The Saint Lucie West Centennial High School Navy JROTC performed Adopt-A-Street responsibilities on Thursday, January 5th, 2023.     The Navy JROTC unit “Navy Eagles” are responsible for picking up trash along Cashmere Boulevard between Heatherwood Boulevard and Crystal River Boulevard. The Navy JROTC Navy Eagles have been performing these duties for the past 16 years.   The platoons rotate the Adopt-A-Street responsibilities monthly. SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Cadets Participate in Honor Flight

  Two Cadets from the SLW Centennial Navy JROTC unit from SLW Centennial High School participated in Southeast Florida’s Honor Flight Program.  The Honor Flight program’s mission is to fly local World War One, World War Two, Korean War, and Vietnam War Veterans to Washington DC, to visit the memorials built to honor their service and sacrifice.   The Cadets that had the privileged to participate were Cadet Petty Officer First Class Zachary Columbia and Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Jeremy Sanchez. The honor flight took place on Saturday, September 16th, 2023.

SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Assists Toys for Tots

  The SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Black Talon Company annually partners with Toys for Tots and the United States Marine Corps to collect toys for underprivileged families and children.  This year they collected over 600 toys (4 Large Boxes) for the Toys for Tots organization and they have volunteered over 400 community service hours in support of Toys for Tots. The NJROTC Black Talon unit begins collecting toys annually, from October and ending in December, every year. SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC assist Veteran’s Group at Horses and Heroes Event

The SLW Centennial High School’s Navy JROTC assisted the Horse and Heroes of Southeast Florida by providing a Color Guard and a Parking Detail for their event. The Horse and Heroes of Southeast Florida empowers and improves the lives of people struggling with the challenges of military injury and trauma, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, helping them to connect to a community through the benefits of equine-assisted activities and therapies.   The program provides veterans and their families the opportunity to learn fundamental horsemanship skills that foster connection and teamwork between horse and human.

SLW Centennial NAVY JROTC Assist in Vietnam and Global War on Terrorism Memorial Wall Tribute

On Saturday, November 27th 2021, the SLW Centennial Navy JROTC assisted the Reverence Motorcycle Association and the Historical Society of Martin County in presenting Colors for the “Tribute to Valor” in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending freedom during the Vietnam War and the Global War on Terrorism. The Color Guard personnel were right rifleman Cadet Petty Officer First Class Daniel Sharpe, unit flagman Cadet Petty Officer First Class Peyton Mangine, ensign flagman Color Guard Commander Cadet Ensign Casey Scott, and left rifleman Cadet Lieutenant Commander Gregory Vetrano.

The SLW Centennial High School NAVY JROTC unit assisted the Caribbean American Cultural Group, Inc. on Monday, January 17th, 2022 at their annual memorial celebration honoring the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event took place at the Sunlight Community Church and the guest speaker was Hon. SLW Centennial High School NAVY JROTC‘s own Naval Science Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Rodriguez, USMC (Ret.) participated in the Woodcarvers Purple Heart Cane presentation this weekend on the 26th of January 2019.  He can be seen on the accompanied picture third from the right.  The Woodcarvers Organization presents handmade walking canes to Military Veteran and Active Duty Purple Heart recipients.  

SLW Centennial Medical Academy Students Participate in Mock Disaster Drill

Ms. Higgin’s and Mrs. Durkee’s Saint Lucie West Centennial Medical Academy students participated in a mock disaster drill at Tradition Medical Center and Martin Emergency at St. Lucie West. They were requested to participate as victims —  all 24 went to Tradition Medical Center first to be “moulaged” by specialized makeup volunteers. Twelve of the students stayed at Tradition Medical Center in the Emergency Room, the other 12 were transported to Martin Emergency at St. Lucie West. Every student was given a script to memorize. More than 117 Health Science A&P 10th and 11th grade students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School learned Hands-Only CPR this week. These students were taught by Mary Higgins’ First Responder and Dual Enrollment students. First Responder classes are available to students who have completed the Allied Health Program as a senior elective. First Responder students prepare for careers in emergency medicine by becoming CPR certified as Health Care Professionals, completing web based classroom instruction and skills in advanced first aid techniques, followed by a shadowing opportunity at various St. Lucie County Fire Stations.
