Southport Middle School Students Enjoy First Pep Rally of the Year

On Monday, August 28th, 6th-grade students at Southport Middle School experienced their first pep rally of the school year. As part of the festivities, students participated in a cheer competition, competed in a cup-stacking relay race, and claimed their victory as the most spirited school team. Southport’s mascot, Ivan, had an amazing time! Once a Hurricane, always a Hurricane!        

Southport Middle School students combine history and art studies

Students at Southport Middle School are joining forces to combine the study of art and history. Eighth grade students rolled out clay slabs, and sixth grade students are working on Mesopotamian red clay table. Pictured are students in Linda Doyle’s class, who joined seventh grade students in making hand-built and press-mold clay bowls using coils, spirals, and spheres of clay. Students are working on the red clay tablets with Phoenician coded messages in collaboration with the social studies department. Southport Middle School Students and Staff Take Part in a Virtual “Inspiration Day”

Southport Middle School students and staff took part in a virtual “Inspiration Day” to help everyone feel a little more at ease with our new distance learning initiative. Students and teachers used their new learning platform to upload inspirational selfies, some even with their pets. Southport Middle School student heads to state for essay contest

Southport Middle School student Hannah Spurr heads to state competition in the local DAR American History Essay Contest and the Good Citizen Award contest sponsored by the Cora Stickney Harper branch of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  A celebratory tea was held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall in Ft. Pierce. Southport Middle School student group hosts annual food drive

Members of the Southport Middle School National Junior Honor Society sponsored an annual food drive to collect non-perishable food items for the school’s food pantry. Students were asked to donate an item in exchange for a dress code pass for the day. Due to the enormous response, school staff was able to fill the pantry, which is available anytime for Southport families in need. Pictured, front row, is Hannah Spurr. Southport Middle School Student Council Beach Clean Up

Southport Middle School Student Council led the way for an environmental service project to clean up local beaches. The “Beach Clean Up” is just one of Southport’s many service project initiatives that students are participating in this school year. The cleanup took place at Jensen Beach.      

Southport Middle School step team stepping up its act

Members of the Southport Middle School Brick Squad Step Team have enjoyed entertaining crowds since the group was formed in November, 2013. Under the leadership of Adrianne Mendoza, these students stepped and marched in the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in January. They will be performing an FCAT Turn Up routine that will be broadcast on the school’s morning news show to pump students up for the upcoming tests, and will be the half-time entertainment at an upcoming basketball game. Southport Middle School Spring Art Show

Parents, Students, Staff, and Artists gathered for the Southport Middle School Spring Art Show at the Vista Grille on Tuesday May 27th. The show featured the current semester’s Adobe Photoshop digital art work including St. Lucie County Fair photography, personal Color “Interest” Boards, and unique Typography. Southport Middle School Spreads Warmth Through Socktober Donations

Southport Middle School proudly joined the Socktober initiative, bringing together teachers, staff, and families to make a meaningful impact. This community effort collected socks of all sizes for donation to the Salvation Army, which distributes them to families in need. Thanks to the generosity of participants, countless individuals will benefit from this simple yet essential gift. The Salvation Army expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support. Southport Middle School Spreading Kindness

  Southport Middle School 2020-2021 Literacy and Art teachers worked together to spread kindness to some very special members of our community. Thanks to Mrs. Herman, Ms. Caissy, Mrs. Richards and the literacy teachers, and the entire Bobcat team who created cards for the folks in nursing home facilities who have been unable to see their families through the pandemic. Southport Middle School proudly hosted its annual Sports Banquet on Wednesday night, bringing together student-athletes, families, and staff for an evening of celebration and recognition. This special event highlights the dedication, perseverance, and achievements of our students and teams throughout the school year. Southport Middle School sixth grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at the Guidance Department’s annual Student Retreat! Southport Middle School Sixth Grade Service Projects

Southport Middle School students focused on a variety of service projects throughout the year. Teams from each grade level selected projects that students chose together that inspired them and benefited the community. The sixth grade Marlins team chose to continue the Adopt a Street service project to help keep Port St. Lucie beautiful. Students from the team meet once a month to pick up litter on the streets around the campus. Southport’s sixth graders recently enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at their second annual 6th Grade Student Retreat. Southport Middle School Service Projects of the Month

Once a month, each of the grade level teams at Southport Middle School selects a special service project that benefits the community as students learn about the importance of volunteerism. Most recently, the seventh grade Panthers’ service projects had students learning about the basics of gardening and they spent the day beautifying the school campus by pulling weeds and planting new shrubs. The eighth grade Gators collected items and provided backpacks for the homeless that included non-perishable foods and other necessities like blankets, clothing, and various utensils. Southport Middle School Selected for NAEP

Southport Middle School eighth grade students participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, an assessment also known as NAEP or The Nation’s Report Card. According to NAEP, the results of the assessment are a way to show what students nationwide know and can do in different subjects. The results provide educators, policymakers, elected officials and parents across the country with invaluable information regarding what students their age are learning. Students at Southport Middle School celebrated World Kindness Day all week long. The National Junior Honor Society started each day with kindness quotes on the morning news show. They passed around kindness bracelets that included random acts of kindness. They also handed out kind cheerful notes to teachers and students throughout the week.
