The Junior Beta Club members led by Ms. Hearl, a fourth grade teacher at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, brought in shoe boxes full of items for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes will be shipped to boys and girls around the world. The students are also collecting and donating toys for Toys for Tots. Great job students! Pictured: Junior Beta Club members
Mrs. Remington, Manatee Academy’s media specialist, set a school-wide challenge to read 3,000 pages in one day. After two hours in (because students were already at 9,000 pages) she upped the ante to 30,000!!! Our voracious students surpassed our goal and read 76,106 pages in one day!!! The challenge? Kiss an exotic animal on live TV! Mrs. Remington kissed our own Vet Prep lab rats, “Iggy” and “Izzy”(although Mrs. Remington nicknamed them both “Icky”)! It is quite apparent what she will go to great lengths to encourage reading at Manatee!
Manatee Academy continued to celebrate Children’s Book Week Tuesday with presentations by not one, but two authors. Pictured is author David Mark Lopez speaking to engaged fourth grade students. Our third graders are so excited to participate in their first “Skirmishes Over Stories” (S.O.S.) luncheon. Students read a certain number of books prior to our meeting, then enjoy their lunch along with Mrs. Remington’s world-famous brownies, and a prize while answering questions about the books they’ve read. S.O. S. is a precursor for “Battle of the Books” which our 4th and 5th graders eagerly participate in every month using the SSYRA books.
Staff and administration team members at Allapattah Flats carved turkeys and the cafeteria staff made homemade sides for a special Thanksgiving meal for the students and staff.
Manatee Academy’s Language Arts Teacher Maggie King and Media Specialist Debbie Remington along with Maureen Carter, Palm Beach county’s Holocaust Program Planner, attended FAU’s “Holocaust: Using Visual Arts” professional development seminar in West Palm Beach. They received four books, a DVD with numerous lesson plans, Holocaust art lessons, dinner, and were able to network with many great teachers in Palm Beach County.
Students at Morningside Elementary who earned Principal’s Honor Roll (straight A’s) were honored by the Principal, Cortina Bell-Gray, with a Pizza party. Congratulations, students!
Rivers Edge’s amazing PTO hosted the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon for the staff. They spoiled the staff with a catered lunch from St. Lucie Draft House and decorated the staff lounge in a family style Thanksgiving decor. The staff loved being able to sit around a large table and kick off the week before Thanksgiving with a relaxing and scrumptious lunch.
Southport’s Literacy Department held their annual celebration of Literacy and Scholastic Book Fair in the media center. There was a host of fun activities and entertainment with musical fluency by our literacy teachers: Wanda Galey, James Saunders, and Band Director James LeBon. The Port St. Lucie Police also sponsored a Stoplifting/Drug Awareness center for the 21st Century after-school program. The students and their families enjoyed the evening.
The second grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition performed traditional songs as well as some contemporary ones at the annual Thanksgiving Performance. Students danced the Turkey Tango, recited poetry, played drums and sticks, and dressed as Native Americans and Pilgrims to commemorate this special holiday.
Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition’s elementary school counselor, Summer Kuba, organized a “Day on the Hill” in Tallahassee where school counselors across the state met with legislators to educate them on the impact school counseling services have on student academic and social emotional development, college and career readiness, and overall lifelong success. Eighth grade students in Mrs. Huszar’s and Ms. Pulcini’s science classes at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition recently worked with inquiry-based strategies to fully understand how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are dependent on each other. Southport Middle School’s Math Coach Kathleen Manchester selected Laura Barco-Garcia, and Media Specialist Angela Mas selected Michael Lovejoy as student representatives to meet with and ask questions of Superintendent E. Wayne Gent. Both the teachers and students enjoyed their lunch with other teachers and selected students from around the county.
In honor of Veterans Day 2015, Oak Hammock K-8 celebrated and honored all of their personal heroes. The wall of stars represent the friends and family members of the Oak Hammock staff and students that have served in the military. Ribbons were attached to the stars to represent special circumstances. Red = Killed in Action; White = career/extended service; Blue = became a law enforcement officer or fireman when they returned; Yellow = still serving. Students in Mrs. Cassie Migliore’s 1st Grade class are studying the literacy theme “Now and Long Ago.” The students read about the homes and schools long ago and decided to see if they could write like they did back then. The students used feathers as quills to try to write their names. The students were also able to model and build Indian teepees from paper bags and decorate them with symbols they learned about.
Awesome! Fantastic! Fun! Just some of the adjectives used to describe the Gaines Academy First Annual Turkey Bowl. Thursday evening’s night of family fun featured games, arts and crafts, face painting, cake walks, relay races, cheerleading instructions, and a Scholastic Book Fair. All of this took place while guests were serenaded by the impressive SGA Band. The featured event of the evening was a chance to win a turkey. Principal Felicia Nixon and Assistant Principal Heather Stanford-Clark announced the Teacher of the Year, Distinguished Minority Educator, Outstanding First Year Teacher, and School Related Employee nominees during the Eagle News Morning Show. The entire school campus celebrated the phenomenal instructional/behavioral contributions of Ms. Dumont (TOY), Ms. Dennis (DME), Ms. Thiery (OFYT-not pictured), and Ms. Tucker (SRE). The Eagles wish them the best as they compete at the district level!
Northport Principal Glenn Rustay and Northport Media Specialist Lynne Gruszka proudly accept one of the most valuable gifts that a military hero can bestow, the Purple Heart. Dr. Miles J. Gill Jr., a local Vietnam Veteran and paratrooper has dedicated his father’s Purple Heart to the children of Northport K-8 School. The Purple Heart was earned by Sgt. Miles J. Gill Sr., 1 Company, 311 Infantry, 78 Division at the Field Hospital in Germany during World War II. The Purple Heart was pinned to Sgt. Gill’s chest in his hospital bed in January of 1945.
